Lyrics Translation

Postby ILuvEire » 2009-05-19, 18:09

So, I've been listening to Danish music, and I want to attempt and translate this Danish song, Du og Jeg by Sanne Salomonsen...

Hvide snit i mine drømme
En tåre bliver til stride strømme
Endu et trip
Jeg prøver at forstå dig

White dress in my dreams.
A tear changes into conflict that flows
Yet a trip :?:
I'm trying to understand you!

Frit fald gennem byens gader
Er du i den rus jeg hader?
Du sværer væk
Jeg prøver på at nå dig

Free fall through the city's streets
Are you drunk, like I hate?
You hard away :?:
I'm trying to reach you

Chorus 1:
Se mig, hør mig
Hold om mig, rør mig!

Look at me, listen to me
Hold on to me, touch me!

Du og jeg
Verden kan forandre sig
Og du og jeg
Kan gøre alt 3x

You and I
The world could change
And you and I
Can do anything 3x

Som i sol i dine hænder
Hudløst ærlige ord der brænder
Jeg skriger stop
Jeg prøver på at nå dig

Like the sun in your hands
Hudløst :?: honest words are burning
I scream "stop!"
I'm trying to reach you

Chorus 1

Chorus 2:
Du og jeg
Hele verden drejer sig
om dig og mig
på flugt fra alt x3

You and I
The whole world revolves
around you and me
Running away from everything

Jeg kender dit selvhand
og mærker din mistro
føler din vrede
din angst og din uro

I know your hand
and label your mistrust
I feel your vrede :?:
Your anxiousness and your unrest

(Se på mig, hør på mig
lyt til mig, rør til mig
smag på mig, duft til mig)
Og kys mine læber!

(Look at me, listen to me
Listen to me, touch me
Taste me, smell me)
And kiss my lips!

Chorus 1

Chorus 2

I don't understand a couple of lines, and I cant figure out what hudløst or vrende mean. I tried breaking it up into hud and løst, but all that got me was loose skin, and I think vrende might mean friendship, but that's just a random guess. :P

Thank you for any corrections I get. :)

That's a pretty good translation, albeit with a few understandable errors.

Hvide snit i mine drømme

Det hvide snit is Danish for a lobotomy. (Literal meaning: the white cut.) The plural form makes it kind of a play on words, I guess.

En tåre bliver til stride strømme

Stride strømme is an idiomatic expression meaning a violent stream.

Endnu et trip

Means, as you rightly assumed, yet another trip.

Du svæver væk

You fly/float away

Hudløst ærlige ord der brænder

Hudløst ærlig is an idiomatic expression. (And quite a tired cliché, at that.) Literally, it means skinlessly honest i.e. totally honest. (Løst can mean both 'loose' and '-less'.)

Jeg kender dit selvhad

Selvhad means self-hate.

og mærker din mistro

Mærker means sense. (The verb, that is. The noun mærke means label.)

Føler din vrede

Vrede means anger, simple as that. :)

Hope that helps and keep up the good work!

PS

Here are some suggestions for future translations, just to get your mind off that horrible Sanne Salomonsen woman.

John Mogensen - Der er noget galt i Danmark

Gasolin' - Langebro
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zYUZVoHr6k

Steppeulvene - Itsi-Bitsi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AVOM4pVHV4

... well, that last one is really just a surreal ramble, probably hard to translate, but quite a tune.
Please correct me!

Jeg er nysgerrig omkring hvordan du finder danske musik? Jeg søger og kan ikke finde noget... :hmm: Kan du anbefale nogle gode musikere? (Og hvor finder du sangteksterne?)

Du mener "bands" (eller mere korrekt: "kunstnere", siden nogle af dem er solo-artister), ikke "bander". "Bander" means "gangs" as in "Gangs of New York" in Danish.

Okay, jeg lærer Vietnamisk og Japansk, men jeg vil oversætte en anden sang!

Jeg oversætter Hedebys af Valravn.

I den første drøm jeg fik
Den døde mand han til mig gik

In the first dream I had
The dead man, to me he went
[Jeg prøver holde den poetisk ord orden]

Han sagde du skal fare til Hedeby
Der bor alle mine frænder ni

He said, you shall go to Hedeby
There lies all my frænder? nine
[Mener frænder familie?]

Min fader og min moder
Min søster og yngste broder

My father and my mither
My sister and youngest brother

Der bor Kristine min væne viv
Hun forrådte mig mit unge liv

There lies Christine, my usual viv??
She betrayed me my young life
[Måske "stole my younge life from me" ville være bedre?]

Kristine med hendes møer fem
De kvalte mig i silke seng

Christine with her five møer???
They stifled me in a silk bed
[Ville "smothered" være bedre?]

De band mig til et knippe hø
Og førte mig over vilden høj
- Så vide da ganger der ord af
Knippe hø og førte over vilden høj

They bound me to a bundle of hay
And led me over wild high??
- So know where to multipy words
Bundle of hay and led over wild high??

Den samme Svend jeg troede bedst
Han rider nu min gode hest

The same Sven I thought best
He's riding my good horse now

Han sladrer over bredden bord
Og spotter mine børn med grimme ord

He gossips about the width of the board [huh?]
And spots my children with nasty words
[Måske marks eller blemishes?]

Han spotter dem med deres far er død
Og giver dem så liden brød

He spots them with their father's death
And he gives them a little bread

Han går med min sølver kniv
Og sover hver nat med min væne viv

He leaves with my silver knife
And sleeps each with my usual viv??

Så er du min mand ud af min æt
Så skal du føre min sag i rette
- Så vide da ganger der ord af
Af min æt så skal du føre min sag i rette

So are you my man from my dreams
So will you keep my case good
So know when to multiply words
Of my dreams so will you keep my case good?

Okay, I'm just going to stop. This song is WAY over my head. If anyone would like to help translate, it would be welcome.

I'm a failure. :(

Frænd is a cognate of friend AFAIK and means something similar. It's an archaic word, obviously. "Der bor alle mine frænder ni" means "there, all my nine friends live"

Min fader og min moder
Min søster og yngste broder

My father and my mither
My sister and youngest brother

Der bor Kristine min væne viv
Hun forrådte mig mit unge liv

There lies Christine, my usual viv??
She betrayed me my young life

Yeah, probably. I have no idea what væne means, but viv is again a cognate of English wife (archaic words)

Kristine med hendes møer fem
De kvalte mig i silke seng

Christine with her five møer???
They stifled me in a silk bed
[Ville "smothered" være bedre?]

"mø" is an archaic word for "woman". Don't know the significant difference between stifle and smother, so I couldn't say!

De band mig til et knippe hø
Og førte mig over vilden høj
- Så vide da ganger der ord af
Knippe hø og førte over vilden høj

They bound me to a bundle of hay
And led me over wild high??
- So know where to multipy words
Bundle of hay and led over wild high??

"Førte mig over vilden høj" means something like "led me across the hill" - vilden is just poetic fluff. "så vide da ganger der ord af" means something like "so know the words that are said:". I have no idea what the last part means... makes no sense to me.

Den samme Svend jeg troede bedst
Han rider nu min gode hest

The same Sven I thought best
He's riding my good horse now

Han sladrer over bredden bord
Og spotter mine børn med grimme ord

He gossips about the width of the board [huh?]
And spots my children with nasty words
[Måske marks eller blemishes?]

bredden is just poetic fluff, but I guess you could say "bredden bord" means "the wide table" in archaic, poetic Danish. About spots/marks/blemishes - yeah whatever you think works best in English.

Han spotter dem med deres far er død
Og giver dem så liden brød

He spots them with their father's death
And he gives them a little bread

Han går med min sølver kniv
Og sover hver nat med min væne viv

He leaves with my silver knife
And sleeps each with my usual viv??

Så er du min mand ud af min æt
Så skal du føre min sag i rette
- Så vide da ganger der ord af
Af min æt så skal du føre min sag i rette

So are you my man from my dreams
So will you keep my case good
So know when to multiply words
Of my dreams so will you keep my case good?

I think "æt" means "kind". So it would say "you're a man of my kind.

Okay, I'm just going to stop. This song is WAY over my head. If anyone would like to help translate, it would be welcome.

I'm a failure. :(

Maybe you should pick something more modern-sounding :)

Yeah, I'm just going to stick with pop. I think I'm going to try a Nik og Jay song tomorrow, they're half English anyway. Hehe

Surely "spotter" means "mocks" in the above instance...
