Please write the lyrics of this Danish music

Postby foram » 2008-09-18, 20:10

Hello, I came across these random children's videos (made by an danish boy) and I thought "What language is that??? It sounds nice! Germanic (because it has a ü sound), no awful High German soundshift, so like what pretty English would be like without Latin influence.

Finally I tracked down the language and the titles.
I like to perform foreign songs, as I did successfully for Finnish polkka, but I really need lyrics, otherwise I feel I have no foundation. Of course I searched Google for them already.

Please write down the Danish lyrics to these two... I would greatly appreciate it...

OK, here's my shot at it, since you didn't ask for a translation, I'm only posting a transcription for now.

Hjemme

Hjem ? (can't make out this line)

At se lysere ud

Start med et smil ...

OK, this is the best, I could do. Especially in the first one there were some words, that I missed unfortunately. :( A translation will follow if requested.

Enjoy. :)
Gløgt er gestsins eyga. (Føroyskt orðafelli)
Wise is the stranger's eye. (Faroese saying)
L'occhio dell'ospite è acuto. (Proverbio faroico)
Hosťovo oko je múdre. (Faerské uslovie)

Hey Mulder! Thanks a lot for your kind work!
The smil song was perfectly done (says my dictionary), it's a nice meaning too.

Actually, when I first saw your post, I was amazed, since I couldn't believe that Danish pronunciation is so different than the spelling. The sounds don't match up at all, that is like English! (I kept hearing "menska" when the real word was "mennesker." I found a Danish dictionary online, so thanks anyway for the translation offer.

The hjemme song sure didsound like a challenge. Other than the words you couldn't get (alting friskt og ?... I keep thinking it is grønt but you can't rhyme the same word together)... I can't figure out what bestefar means... is it like Norwegian... or is it a poetic word meaning ancestors?

That missing line, the best I would do to transcribe it is "Mer anslen granja o, hvor dejlig dagen var"

Anyway, I really appreciated that, because I feel like I've come a long way in Danish appreciation after I saw how proper each word's spelling is. And now instead of singing random syllables, I will be singing Germanic Cognates.

p.s. the word kærlighed is really cool, it seems like middle english because of the gh, and phonetic.

Well, I doubt that! :)
It's just coincidence: kærlig + hed.
Like English "sweet - ness".
Or German: "Schön - heit".

FWIW, for Adjective+Noun contractions in German, those of which the adjective ends in -ig OR -ich, you will ALWAYS use a 'k' instead of a 'h' for the second component:

"Heilig - keit", "Selig - keit", "Obrig - keit", "Feuchtig - keit".
(also: "Gemütlich-keit", "Zärtlich-keit" [cf. Danish 'kærlighed', same word stem! however, German translation is "Liebe" (love) nonetheless!])

However, in Dutch, the h does stay! "heilig - heid", "vuchtig - heid".

I know it's an old thread, but since it's been revived anyway...

Here's filling out the holes and fixing few mistakes:

best -> bedst, bestefar -> bedstefar (as aleco points out)

Furthermore:

Er alting friskt og kønt
Hverdagens problemer er en fællessag
Og livet bliver en vinterdag

Hver aften gør jeg op
Hvor dejlig dagen var
___

Drik af lykkens bæger

De mørke skyer forsvinder ej (x2)

Dine smil er som et kys

For verden bliver et dejligt sted
