La cadena de español de dEhiN

Postby dEhiN » 2019-02-06, 19:18

¡Hola a todos! Esa cadena será mi cadena de español para mis preguntas de español. Mi primera pregunta: ¿es el título de esta cadena correcta?

I'm going to mix Spanish and English, but I'll use Spanish as much as I can.

The Broken Translation Game 2018 just finished and for the game I had to translate from Tamil to Spanish. I'm posting my Spanish translation here in the hopes that someone who's better in Spanish than me will be able to show me any mistakes I made. Because I translated from Tamil, I won't be posting the original here.

I don't know the answer to the first question for sure (I think it's correct, but I'm going to leave that up to a native speaker to decide and would appreciate the opinions of other non-native (but fluent) speakers on this, too, if they want to provide one), but I'm going to attempt corrections just because no one else has offered any and also I can help with the part about the BTG text (since I provided the Tamil text you translated it from):

Here I ended up having to mix in fixes to your translation along with attempted fixes to your Spanish grammar, because otherwise they'd conflict with each other (I'll try to explain why below the text):

Changed ética humana to plural since it was plural in Tamil
Not sure how கருக்கள் became temas since it means 'seeds'
Será here means 'can it be'.
செய்திகள் அளவாக ஒழுங்கில்லாமல் மனுவாகிறார்கள் = they develop in disorder according to/in accordance with events
தோட்டக்காராக can also mean 'as gardeners'.
Podemos decidir dónde necesitamos plantar... is roughly equal to "podemos decidir dónde plantar..." but the other verbs (usar, darles, proveerles, etc.) should be in the infinitive, too.
தரம் means 'type, kind, sort', not 'quality'.
கொம்மட்டி = watermelon = sandía
வளர்த்து வந்தால் = something like 'if it ends up growing'
தற்செயலின் இயற்கையில் = literally 'in the state of chance', i.e. by chance or accident, not just 'naturally'

Crecer is intransitive, so 'to grow' something is hacer crecer (i.e. to make something grow).
Necesitar doesn't take de.
Use qué before a noun, not cuál (this might be subject to dialect variation; I'm not sure).
Tomates (plural) can't grow to be grande (singular), only grandes (plural again).
Quizás takes subjunctive verb forms, so crezcan, not *crecerán.

Pero parece que desde fines de abril dEhiN ya no visita el foro. Igual que Vijay, encontré este hilo muy tarde.

Hi all, I'm back on UL and so I had some Spanish questions. Well, really just one. What does lo que mean? Or what are its uses? I was listening to some Spanish music today and I remember hearing it in a song and wondering what its exact translation and/or grammatical analysis is. (Unfortunately, I don't remember the song context or I'd post that).

Welcome back!
Lo que means "that which". In English it will often just be translated as "what," but never as a question; it's a relative pronoun. In more formal language we'd translate it as "that which". The word lo always refers to something specific that is not stated in the sentence. For example:

lo que hiciste = I know what you did (I know that specific thing, which you did)

Lo que ocurre es.... = What's happening is... (that which is happening is...)

Olvidé lo que significa = I forgot what it means (I forgot that which it means)

Cueste lo que cueste = whatever it takes (literally: may it cost that which it may cost)

Gracias! I never knew exactly what the lo part meant in lo que. The formal translation I find very helpful, actually!

Sí, ¿por qué?

Cadena significa 'chain'. Creo que 'thread' se dice hilo.

Cadena significa 'notebook' también, ¿no? Y gracias por la corrección.
