Latvian songs

Postby frany » 2005-04-17, 13:38

Hello, I'm new to this forum.

During my last visit to Riga I bought a CD with old Imants Kalņinš songs. I love that music and I would like to understand the lyrics. In particular I would really appreciate if someone could translate into English, French or German the song "Betas dziesma".

Thank you in advance. I love this language and I hope I'll be able to speak Latvian some day.

Zeltaini stari slīd,
Aiz tāla kalna saule spīd,
Un zeme lūdz,
Lai saule neaiziet,
Lai viņa nenoriet,
Aiz kalna tālumā.
Aiz kalna tālumā.

Balti kā ievu ziedi
Melni laukakmeņi zied,
Un zemes klusumā tie bedrēs dzied,
Bet cilvēks rok un rok,
Un cilvēks neatrod,
Jo cilvēks laukakmeņa ziedus nesaprot.

Ja tu mūs nozagsi,
Un vienaldzībā turēsi,
Mēs sadegsim, bet saulē aiziesim,
Tavs tukšais lauks vēl tukšāks nekā agrāk kļūs,
Un tad tu sauksi mūs,
Un tad tu sauksi mūs.

Welcome! Unfortunatley my Latvian skills are too weak to translate all this text, but I hope any Latvian will show here in couple or more days ;)

But nevertheless, I'll try :)

Zeltaini stari slīd, [a golden ray slides]
Aiz tāla kalna saule spīd, [behind the far mountain the sun shines]
Un zeme lūdz, [and the earth asks]
Lai saule neaiziet, [for sun not to come]
Lai viņa nenoriet, [and not to fly]
Aiz kalna tālumā. [behind the farness of mountain]
Aiz kalna tālumā. [.. same ..]

Balti kā ievu ziedi [White as bird-cherry's flowers]
Melni laukakmeņi zied, [black rocks blossom]
Un zemes klusumā tie bedrēs dzied, [and in earth's quietness the holes sings]
Bet cilvēks rok un rok, [but a man digs and digs]
Un cilvēks neatrod, [and the man doesn't find]
Jo cilvēks laukakmeņa ziedus nesaprot. [.. don't know ..]

Ja tu mūs nozagsi, [..]
Un vienaldzībā turēsi, [..]
Mēs sadegsim, bet saulē aiziesim, [We will burn but will come to the sun]
Tavs tukšais lauks vēl tukšāks nekā agrāk kļūs, [your empty field is emptier, unlike..]
Un tad tu sauksi mūs, [and then you'll call us]
Un tad tu sauksi mūs. [.. same ..]

I think it is great that you have such an interest in Latvian that you are also doing translations. For your following translation, however, I have made some essential corrections and have marked the correct translation lines with asterisks:

>Zeltaini stari slīd, [a golden ray slides]
(Zeltaini stari is plural and slīd is also often used to refer to the floating of clouds so the correct sense is:)
*Golden rays shimmer (dissipate)
Aiz tāla kalna saule spīd, [behind the far mountain the sun shines]
(no mountains in Latvia)
*The Sun shines behind (viz. beyond) the distant hill
Un zeme lūdz, [and the earth asks]
(asks would be the Latvian word prasa)
*And the Earth pleads
Lai saule neaiziet, [for sun not to come]
(no, the meaning is exactly the opposite)
*That the Sun not go
Lai viņa nenoriet, [and not to fly]
(fly has nothing to do with it)
*That the Sun not set
Aiz kalna tālumā. [behind the farness of mountain]
Aiz kalna tālumā. [.. same ..]
(A poet would write Behind the distant hill)
*Behind the hill in the distance.
*Behind the hill in the distance.

Balti kā ievu ziedi [White as bird-cherry's flowers]
*White as the flowers of the bird-cherry tree
Melni laukakmeņi zied, [black rocks blossom]
*The black rocks in the fields also blossom
Un zemes klusumā tie bedrēs dzied, [and in earth's quietness the holes sings]
*And sing in their holes in the quietness of Earth
Bet cilvēks rok un rok, [but a man digs and digs]
*But mankind digs and digs
Un cilvēks neatrod, [and the man doesn't find]
*Yet mankind does not find [what is sought]
Jo cilvēks laukakmeņa ziedus nesaprot. [.. don't know ..]
*For mankind does not understand the blossoms of the rocks.

Ja tu mūs nozagsi, [..]
*If you will steal from us
Un vienaldzībā turēsi, [..]
*And hold us in in difference
Mēs sadegsim, bet saulē aiziesim, [We will burn but will come to the sun]
*We may burn up, but we will go to the Sun
Tavs tukšais lauks vēl tukšāks nekā agrāk kļūs, [your empty field is emptier, unlike..]
*(Whereas) Your empty field will be emptier than before
Un tad tu sauksi mūs, [and then you'll call us]
(Latvian does not have conractions like this)
*And then you will call us
Un tad tu sauksi mūs. [.. same ..]
*And then you will call us

Enjoy,

Andis
