Choosing a dilalect

Postby Osias » 2017-10-16, 14:45

I intend to put some more effort in my Arabic some day. This year I'm trying to focus on French and - if the time and motivation returns - German. BUT...

... but I can listen to music while I'm at work and some Arabic language songs from Arabic language radio stations won't hurt. But I was thinking about focusing on a dialect/regional language.

Maybe it won't make a difference. Maybe if I'm listening to songs to get the feel of the language/group of languages and get used to its phonetics while not studying it actively it doesn't matter which one. Maybe I don't even have a choice and all radio stations play songs from all spoken varieties of Arabic.

What do you think?

If you are listening to songs then I'd suggest either Egyptian or Levantine because most songs are sung in those two dialects :)

Listening to any dialect will at least give you a sense of the phonetics of Arabic, as you said. Since you're also focusing on French, you could do a dialect like Algerian where French borrowing and codeswitching is common...

My favorite Arabic radio station is راديو أرضي, based in Amman. It plays alternative Arabic music, mostly from the Levant, and to a lesser degree from Egypt and elsewhere.
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

I finally decided to learn the Egyptian dialect. I am beginning with it.

I was thinking about Levantine because I went to a Lebanese restaurant and noticed they don't put cinnamon on every recipe, but I'll listen to this radio a little more.
