مشروع ليلى - للوطن

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qn3EFPOuEGM

Others have tamed hurricanes to control destiny
And we are blown away with a breeze, and return to destruction
When you dare ask about the decaying situation
They shut you up with slogans about conspiracy
The herds called you a traitor everytime you asked for change
They made you miserable until you sold your freedom for the country

They said to you
Enough preaching, come make me dance (dance with me)
Take that frown off your face and dance with me

They taught you the Anthem. They said your struggle is for the country
They numbed you in your artery. They said your stagnation is good for the country

They said to you
Enough preaching, come make me dance (dance with me)
Take that frown off your face and dance with me

تتجرأ you dare
تدهور deterioration
شعار, شعارات slogan, slogans
مؤامرة plot, conspiracy
خون to accuse of treachery, consider a traitor
قطيع flock
يضيع lost
يأس depress
حاج enough!
بشر preach
مكشر frowning
تع come!
نشيد anthem
صراع conflict, struggle
خدر numb
وريد vein
خمول confusion, perplexion

Cairokee
ممشيك ?
"making you go" (per your translation above). From مشي "to go, walk" + second person participle ك .

يوديك ?
Not sure about this one. I think it's يؤدّيك (leads you, makes you)

نفوخ mind?
Literally "brain" (nafuukh)

هنفضل ?
"we will stay/remain". From فضل, conjugated for the first person plural, plus the future marker هـ .

Mashrou' Leila
منرتد ?
"we return", I think, from ردّ "to return"

What is the ت doing in the middle of the root, though?

3afwan :) and I don't know, honestly. I assume it's part of that verb pattern but I'm not very good at Levantine so I'm not sure.

voron wrote:From Pimsleur, which teaches Syrian dialect, I learnt this to mean "straight ahead" (when telling directions, they used "go straight ahead" - روح على طول), but then in the book "Living Arabic" that teaches Jordanian dialect, they used دُغري for "straight ahead". Fun with dialects.

Yup, it definitely means "straight ahead". It can mean "always", "forever", "straight ahead", "straight away"...probably more things too :D

They just transcribe it this way for some reason, but if you listen to the video, what she really says is منشوفه. I noticed this in all the Levantine videos I watched on langmedia.

Good! "Binshoofo" seems so Palestinian to me.

Also, about you guys talking about "i" in dighri, kil shi etc - definitely a feature of Lebanese. Words like "kol" "donya" "kont" "mushkila" "shoft" are pronounced "kel" "dinyi" "kinit" and "mishkile" "shifit". Most of the grouping of khaleeji actually does this too - "kel" "dinya" "kent" "mishkila" "sheft".

Lebanese is a bit different in that it inserts that "i" a lot of the time with verbs (shifit, kinit, ktibit etc). I think this happens in some Iraqi dialects too.

Obviously, Lebanese also turns ta marbuta (and even sometimes final alif) into "i" or "eh", so "tofla" becomes "tifleh" and "7elwa" becomes "7elwi" etc. It also turns final -i into "eh", so 7abibi is 7abibeh and shu 3am tamli? is shu 3am tamleh etc.

(Sorry for formatting, computer issues :D)

Mashrou' Leila - Djin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSnJJv_cBDw

بالغابة منسهر بالليل
منشرب من قلب الغزال
مننخر الأرض بعصيان
ليطوف الخمر من العين
كل النسوان والرجال
جايين لابسين الجلود
بانتظار اللي بيموت وبيعود
منسمع حكمة الأعناب
كل الحكم بالأعناب
رح نهجر حالنا
بس الله معنا

غابة - forest
يسهر - this was in the previous LangMedia video
عصيان - disobedience
نخر - to eat into, gnaw
طاف - to overflow, flood
خمر - wine
عين - spring
جلود - skins, hides (leather: جِلْد)
أعناب - grapes (sg. عِنَب)
هجر - to abandon, desert

ما اشربش القزوزة ولا الشاي أنا
رح غرق حزني حانسى إسمي حأعطي نفسي لليل
[x2]

قزوزة - soft drink? (like Spanish gaseosa?); there's not many Google hits for this word
غرق - to drown (tr. gharraq, intr. ghireq)
حزن - sadness

وعمادة كبدي بالجن
برقص لعوذ من الجن
رح غطس كبدي بالجن
باسم الأب والإبن
بكرا بس أوعى بالليل
يوم القيامة حيقوم
لكن الخمار مابيوجع قد الهموم
بيني وبين فرحي حيط
بسمك قزازة الكاس
برلين ما صمدت
ناولني وهبط

عمادة - baptism
كبد - liver
عاذ, يعوذ - to take refuge, seek protection
غطس, يغطس - to be submerged, immersed (intr. according to the dictionary but the English translation suggests a transitive meaning; perhaps the translation is taking poetic license)
وعّى, يوعّى - to wake up (MSA وعى, to be conscious, aware)
خمار - hangover
وِجِع، يُوْجَع - to hurt
قدّ - [in this context] as much as
هموم - worries, cares (sg. همّ)
فرح - happiness, joy
حيط - wall
سمك - thickness
قزازة - piece of glass, pane of glass, glass bottle
كاس - cup, glass of alcohol
مَد، يُصمُد - to stand firm
نَاوَل، يْنَاوِل - to hand to someone
هَبَط، يُهبُط - to fall, collapse

(Translation from Youtube subtitles, notes mine; it seems more poetic than literal, a lot of the time it switches intransitive verbs to transitive ones or rephrases things)
We keep watch by the forest moon
Drink from the gazelle’s heart
Drive stakes into the ground
To draw wine from the spring
All the women and the men
Arrive shrouded in hides
Awaiting he who dies and then returns to life
We heed the wisdom of vines
Vines guard all wisdom of life
We relinquish self
But the god is with us

Oh I don’t do sodas, man I don’t do tea
I drown my sorrows, forget my name, and Give myself to the night
Oh I don’t do sodas, man I don’t do tea
I drown my sorrows, forget my name, and Give myself to the night

Liver baptized in gin
I dance to ward off the djin
Drown my liver in gin
In the name of the father and the son
Tomorrow I rise with the night
And the reckoning bell tolls
But hangovers hurt far less than these woes (lit. the hangover doesn't hurt as much as worries)
Between myself and my joy
A wall as thick as a wine glass
Berlin’s could not stand
Pour me another; tear down the wall

Today I found this collection of Arabic political cartoons which have been translated to English. I've added them to my Anki deck to study the new words in them (for example, the first cartoon is on the top of the card for the verb شتم).

https://imgur.com/gallery/zd5rl

سخرية - mockery
سَخِرَ - to mock
تضامناً - in solidarity
تضامن - solidarity
حرية التعبير - freedom of speech
ينتقم - to get revenge
انتقام - revenge
مساواة - equality
شتم - to abuse, swear at, call names

I'm going to start making flashcards after cutting up songs in Audacity. I think it'll help me memorise songs in languages like Arabic where no matter how many times I try and sing along to the lyrics I get nowhere.

I'll start with this Egyptian rap song (translation courtesy Revolutionary Arab Rap: The Index):

http://revolutionaryarabraptheindex.blo ... ptian.html

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIxIHjUWA_I

The first verse has given me 15 cards.

I'm uncertain about one sentence, though:

business contacts and personal interests.
شغل مقاومة ومصالح شخصية

Doesn't "مقاومة" mean resistance?

I'm going to try to transcribe this advertisement starring the Lebanese rapper Malikah.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyF62mQcpKc

This is hard. I can contribute with a couple things but not everything.
يعني أعرفي حال الطلع؟ علمسرح

عارفة
the rest - can it perhaps be عارفة حالي طالعة : I know my condition (when) I'm going on stage
بركرز عن نفسي ؟ اكثر عالي ؟

بركز عن نفسي اني فوت اكثرعلّي ثقتي بالنفس, فوت اكثر بمالكة

وايمتا بأكون ما عندي شي بيطلب منك ب؟ زي بنفس

She says وقت for "when", not ايمتا
The word starting with "z" must have to do something with the root ذاد (to increase), but I can't hear the exact form.

؟ كلين انسان طبيعي
بتستحي وبتخف مثل كل النسوان ؟
أنا وجدت نفسي ؟ وجدت الهب هوب
أكيد كان في ؟ عقبات بالطريق

بضلّني كلين انسان طبيعي عادي
بتستحي وبتخف مثل كل النسوان بالدنيا
أنا وجدت نفسي وقت وجدت الهب هوب
أكيد كان في صعوبات بالطريق

I think voron has surpassed me in Levantine Arabic but here are a few things I noticed:

اسمي لين فتوح ملقبة بمالكة مسرح

بس هلق أنت ؟ مع مين عم بتحكي [I thought this might be a question: هل انت ... مع مين عم بتحکي "do you know who you're talking to?"]
لانه مع اني أنه كمالكة فنانة وبطلع وبغني أغنية قدام أربعين ألف شخص علمسرح

وقت بأكون ما عندي شي بيطلب مني كل هالثقة زيادة بالنفس

بتستحي وبتخاف مثل كل النسوان بالدنيا
