Useful phrases..

Postby allemaalmeezinge » 2005-07-03, 11:06

Hola Catalanes :D

Can anyone of you help me out a bit by telling some useful and commonly used phrases in daily-speech?
In the near future I'm planning a trip to Barcelona, so what are the things I can say, when, for instance, ordering something in a restaurant or asking for lightening one's cigarette (:D)

Please tell me some catchy phrases that are quite useful :p

:D thanks a lot in advance

You might like Kauderwelsch, Katalanisch Wort für Wort. I have that phrasebook and it's really excellent and covers everything you need plus basic grammar, a short vocabulary list.
I couldn't try it myself yet (hope to do so this summer), but I worked through it and like it a lot.
Please correct my mistakes!

In a restaurant you can use "Teniu...?" for asking if they have some kind of food (it's better to read the menu though :p) and then for ordering: "Jo vull...[what u order]".

I didn't understand the cigarette thing.. yo uwant to lighten someone's cigarette or to have your cigarette lightened? :p sorry.

Ah, in that case i would say: "Tens foc?" that is used also in spanish "Tienes fuego?". ;)

However, you won't have many problems if you know spanish... many workers in restaurants don't speak catalan as they are from south america etc...

Thanks, recently I became afraid about what language to use, as I want to approach in the language that is "really" the mother's tongue. But almost everybody there is bilingual, right? I'm looking forward, this will be fun :)

This phraselist is a bit weird. They just give you a weird "transcription" of the original phrases which is difficult to read and can mislead the learners... but anyway, I'm posting here a list with the words and IPA (Central Catalan, as pronounced around Barcelona)* ;) And of course, this list can always be updated.

* I'm not from BCN so there may be some mistakes. I would appreciate corrections from proper speakers of Central catalan who know català normatiu and IPA transcription :) (sklo, ja m'has sentit xdd]
