Hey guys, I was just listening to kvæðir, which I must admit, are supercool. Perhaps you might be familiar with Ormurinn Langi? I'm not learning Faroese (although I might in the not so near future) but I have a curious question, which might sound a bit silly - I don't know.

Anyway, the first stanza of Ormurin Langi goes:

Viljið tær hoyra kvæði mítt,
viljið tær orðum trugva,
um hann Ólav Trygvason,
og hagar skal ríman snúgva.

A translation of this goes:

Would you like to hear my song,
would you believe my words?
About king Olaf Tryggveson,
the subject of this song.

So I'm wondering, "tær" is apparently in dative case, but would that first line be appropriate in modern speech in this context, or is it poetic licence?

Tær kann eisini merkja 'they' í kvenkyni í føroyskum, men í hesum tiltikna kvæði er tað sikkurt fornnorska persónsfornavnið þér (í 2. persóni fleirtali).

Tær can also means 'they' fem. in Faroese, but in this particular stanza it's obviously the Old Norse pronoun þér (2. pl.).

Yeah, it's the second personal plural and it's a remnant of the cognate of East Norse I (Dan., Dial. Swe.), ni (Stand. Swe.) from Old East Norse íR without vowel opening í > é or added þ-. (Standard Swedish ni from I is analogous to how Old West Norse þér is derived from an older ér, i.e., part of the verb is added.)
But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright Brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

Hey Mulder-21 og Swienegel,

Eg tosi og skrivi ikki føroyskt av tí at eg byrjaði. I am very glad that there is the Faroese discussion forum like that. I started learning Faroese few weeks ago and now I am in Lesson 2, that is why I am not still able to write longer sentences in F. But it will be better soon. I hope I will have more time for learning.

P.

I'll leave the corrections to the natives. ;)

Cesare M, I think you should keep away from correcting other people's Faroese ;) Mine isn't good, but I can see a couple of mistakes in your correction, for example you changed a perfectly fine 'veit' into an incorrect 'viti'.
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/vita#Faroese

And Faroese does have 'skal', it's the first and third person singular form in the present tense of the verb 'skula'.
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/skula#Faroese

So I suggest that you leave it to the native speaker(s) :)
Swedish (sv) native; English (en) good; Norwegian (no) read fluently, understand well, speak badly; Danish (dk) read fluently, understand badly, can't speak; Faroese (fo) read some, understand a bit, speak a few sentences; German (de) French (fr) Spanish (es) forgetting; heritage language, want to understand and speak but can't.

Witaj, Piotrku. :)

Red are serious errors, and green more like syntax errors or minor errors. Blue is something I had no idea what you wanted to say. :)

Welcome to the forum. I'm trying to be active on the sub-forum a lot, but sadly other things keep me away from it. But feel free to ask here and I'll answer as best as I can ASAP.

Enn eina ferð vælkomin. :)

Maybe 'I'm new here, so I don't know where to write this. Can anyone tell me, is it correct / in the right place?'

Those are the only alternatives that makes sense to me at least.

Oh, right yes, sounds logical:

Eg eri nýggjur her, so eg veit ikki, hvar eg skal skriva hetta? Kann onkur siga mær, um hetta er rætta staðið?

Thanks for your answers!

Yes, that was what I wanted to write. The everpresent 'eg' is something I can't get used to, and the 'tað / hetta' is confusing for me as well. Is there any simple rule for that?

And the other sentence was meant to be something along the lines of 'If we had played something, you would be able to download it'. Or something similar.
:)
