Stick to Faroese, people. The question regarding the pronunciation of the word 'Faroese' belongs under English.
Gløgt er gestsins eyga. (Føroyskt orðafelli)
Wise is the stranger's eye. (Faroese saying)
L'occhio dell'ospite è acuto. (Proverbio faroico)
Hosťovo oko je múdre. (Faerské uslovie)

Fluent: Faroese, Danish, English, German
Almost fluent: Norwegian, Swedish
Basic: Slovak (studying), Spanish
Have studied: Hebrew, Russian

well, even if it was posted a month ago or 2 days ago...doesn´t mean you should use the isolated Faroese forum to discuss topics related to other languages, right? :para:  In my opinion you could get more opinions and replies using the Eng forum...

I would happily help you, it sounds exciting!
What is your dissertation about?

It's about a certain construction thought to occur mainly in the Germanic languages. (I can't really tell you what exactly I'm looking for, because then you might be influenced when I ask you for sentences in Faroese :-)))
But basically I need someone to translate some sentences into Faroese (not a lot of them, and rather simple) and later I need ca. 5 more native speakers, who will do an online survey.
It'd be great if you could help me! Could you give me your e-mail address or do you have Facebook?

Thanks,
Ulrike

Yes, this should be no problem at all, I'm glad to be of some help. I have sent you a PM with my email address, or rather, I will do so right after posting this. At any rate you'll have received it once you read this.
I would love to read your dissertation once it's finished, if that's not too big a problem?

Oh, and good luck further on your writing. :D

Ahh Faroese is so familiar yet so distant. I can read almost everything with my Icelandic knowledge, but I can barely write one sentence, or understand anyting for that matter. Hopefully I'll learn it properly one day. :)

I just came in here to have a peek, but I have to say I'm intrigued:) The language is beautiful, and better yet, I seem to be able to understand most of it just by knowing Norwegian :D I had no idea they were that similar! I can't understand nearly as much written Icelandic.

Faroese (at least the written language) seems to be something like halfway between Nynorsk and Icelandic. I suppose it also depends which dialect of Norwegian you speak, seeing as some are closer to Icelandic/Faroese than others, particularly the more conservative dialects where the dative case is preserved along with other features (mostly Vest-Telemark/Sogn og Fjordane, as far as I know). In any case, it's easier for an Icelander to read Faroese than Nynorsk, but easier for a Norwegian to read Faroese than Icelandic. Does that make sense?

It makes perfect sense:) I'm Trønder by the way, though my dialect is that of the main city and thus closer to bokmål than nynorsk. It is still quite easy to get Faroese, even if I have to guess at a few words:)

Maybe I will fare better trying to learn this than Icelandic, which was my original plan. (After I have mastered Welsh... It may be a while  )

Faroese certainly must be one of the easiest languages for a Norwegian to acquire. But as you've already noticed, it more or less depends on where in Norway you come from.

As it stands right now, quite a bit of translation into faroese is being done on livemocha.com
So hopefully, the 101 course will be up within long.

So um nakar av tykkum, ið hava føroyskt sum móðurmál, hava hug at hjálpa til, so er bara at koma. Øll hjálp hevðið verið ótrúliga góð, síðan vit eru sá fáir føroyskir umsetarar. Jú fleiri vit eru, jú betri verur dygdin.
