doors are closing...

Postby adventrue » 2008-11-15, 15:26

HI everyone. In Tbilisi in the metro a recorded voice always repeats the same thing at each station. It starts off sounding something like "shendegi ...". I'm sure it means "please step back from the doors they will close now. The next station is... (for example followed by "Mardjanishvili")
If someone could write it down for me in the Georgian alphabet (and possibly in transliteration) would be very grateful :)

I'm not so sure... but I think they are saying something like: ''Arebi igledeba! Shemdeg sadguri [name]''

Thanks so far ! So does ared igledeba mean "attention" or "stay away from the doors"?

Hello Adventrue and D39, I’m not great in Georgian, but maybe the phrase was:

კარები იკეტება, შემდეგი სადგური … (karebi iketeba, shemdegi sadguri …)

‘karebi’ means ‘<the> door’ (but it’s in plural)
‘iketeba’ means ‘is closing’, this is the passive voice for ‘ketavs’ (closes, shuts)
‘shemdegi’ is ‘<the> next’
‘sadguri’ means ‘station’

‘Attention’ (or literally ‘carefully’) would be ფრთხილად (‘prtxilad’, where ‘x’ stands for ‘kh’, or the Russian ‘x’).

I hope this helps :)
