I’ve heard that modern Georgian alternative music is (surprisingly!) on a world-level. They play mostly jazz and jazz-rock. Does anyone could give any names?

Nino Katamadze for jazz and Mzime Jvari for rock...

33a plays something that reminds me of reggae/ska

I don't know what jazz-rock sounds like, any examples about famous artists from the US/UK?

Could you give me any links where I could listen to Georgian? I only want to know how it sounds like. It would be the best if it wasn't a song. Actually I found a radiostation but it was all written in their alphabet and I couldn't find any signs either for listening.

This song mentions "pikri," meaning "to think." Is this a loan from Persian/Turkish/etc. ?

that's right, pikri (or fiqri in georglish) is from arabic(persian/turkish) فكر "thought"

the persians/arabs/turks all invaded georgia at various points in history and left behind a decent number of loan words.

Here's a cute Georgian video - I was told some of the lyrics are just nonsense words, and the rest is about friendship I guess?

hi helen che, i'm really glad to see you around.

I've been interested into Georgian for some years, but the resources are in Russian so I still didn't actively start learning it.

Having said that, I do actively research Georgian music, as I work on a radio program where we play music from everywhere in the world as long as it is not sung in the English language. Recently, we've written and recorded a whole week of program covering the major artists from Georgia in different genres. I'd be glad if you could find me some lyrics and translate them here later.

Well, we tried to pick up different genres: pop, rock, hip-hop, alternative, jaz, some folk, too.

We played Dato Xujadze, Kaxa Ciskaridze, Shavi Princi/Jokeri, Alubali, Vakis Parki, Mdzime Jvari, 33a, Ucnobi.

But we also left some songs we can play alongside the weekly program on sundays.

I'd like to have the lyrics for Cveneburi Simghera from Ucnobi (not sure this is the correct name of that song). My friends and I liked him the mostly, together with 33a.

Hello.
I think Georgian music should be judged according to its folk songs and folk dance music but the modern singers are rather famous among the young generation. If you want to learn anything about it I will also give you the list of best folk songs and artists.

And here is the lyrics of Chveneburi Simghera

For those who are still dying to know, the lyrics to the Viagra super lights song:

I fell in love with a boy but he's a virgin
I made him feel my warmth and hope
Though I caressed and hugged him
I couldn't get into his crotch (?)

Thinking about him and the sorrow really affected me (?)
He nearly died and killed me too
He found out all my secrets
But I gave him my heart as a souvenir

So many nights have passed waiting for you
You are with me but I still miss you...
Caress me, please do it tonight
And in the end I'll tell you stop, stop, stop

I am fed up with your virginity
In case you didn't know, patience has its limit
Every night has passed waiting for you
I am not waiting for your call any more

Iriao represented Georgia at the ESC last year. This was the first completely Georgian song ever participated at the contest.
