When sth is "choice"

Postby Gormur » 2005-11-14, 3:36

My friend made a remark just a while ago. "Those girls are choice". Does this mean that they're the best? Anyone else heard this usage of "choice"?

Yes to both of those questions. I've heard that expression here and I think I've used it occasionally.

Interesting. My friend is from BC, so maybe it's a Pacific NW or just a Western expression. I've actually never heard it before tho... :?

"Choice" in this sense used to be very common in N.Z. In fact a generation ago it was perhaps the most popular word among young people to express approval. It could be used adjectivally, both attributively and predicatively, as well as by itself ("Choice!"). It's not heard nearly as much today. Instead of "choice, mate!" you are much more likely to hear "cool, bro!"

I've heard it, and that means, as everyone's said and you've already guessed, that something is like top-of-the-line or something.

I've never heard it out of anyone's mouth I knew. Oh I think I know where I heard it. Wasn't it in Ferris Bueller's Day Off or something?

Well that may make more sense now. My friend is older (42) and his speech is influenced by British English - he has British citizenship from his parents (who are British) and he grew up in Victoria, BC (the second England).

Yup, before reflexsilver mentioned it I thought I'd heard it in that movie as well.

It's quite common.
