Survey results are in

Postby Tom K. » 2005-08-30, 18:20

That "linguistic survey" turned out to be useful. I compiled the results of that survey and several others from other boards, some of which I wrote, and put them together at http://students.csci.unt.edu/~kun/bigsurvey.html

Anyone care to comment on the results? Anyone surprised by any of the figures?

I'm amazed about my region where I grew up in (Northeast Pennsylvania), that there are no differences in all of those mentioned words.

May I ask you, how many people did you surveyed from Northeast Pennsylvania? I'm getting the impression that I'm the only one from there surveyed.

Yeah...you were the only one. I guess that part of the country doesn't have a lot of people who go to boards about language. If you want to know how many people from a region were in the survey, put your mouse pointer on one of the blue percentages. You will then see two numbers: the number of people who claimed the words were different, followed by the total number of people who were asked. For some places, like Northeast Pennsylvania and Upstate New York, there was only one person who answered. It's not perfect but there are some factors that can't be controlled.

Well, I tried clicking and it doesn't work, since it's just texts, not as links.

You don't have to click, just move your mouse pointer over the numbers and wait a bit, you'll see the numbers then.
Please correct my mistakes!
