A little late noting this, but "different from" is acceptable in my dialect; personally, it's what I prefer. "Better" complicates things, but in that case I'd use both prepositions: "different from (or better than) animals".

I'll point out that, in formal contexts, you'd be advised to use the same the construction for both parts of the comparison, which is called parallelism. In the rephrases of your sentence, that would be: "TPAM prefers reading romantic books to
reading thrillers." and "TPAM would rather read romance novels than
read thrillers." The remaining one, "TPAM prefers romances to thrillers" is already parallel.
