This construction is grammatically correct, but in common usage, native speakers would more likely say "sing in an opera" or "sing in operas." The construction "sing in opera" is typically reserved for specialized speech, in particular academia or musicology, i.e. "Singing in opera is often marked by vocal techniques particular to operatic music." It's kind of a different register of speech, one might say.
Anyhow, while I am a musician and a singer, my singing voice is not suited for operatic music, and I never quite warmed up to operas in general, even though I had to study many operas for my music degree.
