Egypt and Sumer ftw.

But also the Hittite civilization. We linguists are forever grateful that they adopted writing and that they stored hundreds of tablets well enough for us to discover. Without that sort of wisdom, we probably wouldn't have reconstructed Proto-Indo-Euoprean that well.

The Persian study group has started to make me curious about the history of the Persian people. Apparently, the Persians originally settled to the northwest of modern-day Iran. I guess that would be modern-day Armenia and/or Azerbaijan?
