Tell us what song you're listening to right now, preferably by posting the video or a link :)

----------

Continuation of What song are you listening to right now 2. The old thread can now be found in Forum Archives.

----------

In quotes, please don't post videos. Instead, make them into links by removing the things inside of brackets, for example:

-> content
Swedish (sv) native; English (en) good; Norwegian (no) read fluently, understand well, speak badly; Danish (dk) read fluently, understand badly, can't speak; Faroese (fo) read some, understand a bit, speak a few sentences; German (de) French (fr) Spanish (es) forgetting; heritage language.

One more language from Mexico: Tojolabal is another Mayan language spoken in Chiapas, though from a different branch of the Mayan family. This is a Tojolabal song performed at the International Book Fair in Mexico City five years ago, preceded by an introduction in Spanish:

 I didn't even know you listened to Mexican songs.

Q'anjob'al a.k.a. Kanjobal is somewhat distantly related to Tojolabal (and Chuj) and is spoken mainly in Guatemala (as well as Mexico, to a lesser extent). This is a (I guess folk, or perhaps Christian) song in Q'anjob'al by Chepe Diego called "Yochwan a k'ul tol watx' in beybal":

Mam is another Mayan language spoken mainly in Guatemala and in Chiapas to a lesser extent. One of my professors was Nora England, whose work on Mam is cited pretty much throughout the Wikipedia article on that language. This is a song called "Txe' Joj" by a Maya rock band called B'aktun Cero and sung by Ajub' Ajb'itz a.k.a. José Gabriel Ortiz. They apparently perform songs in K'iche' (another Mayan language) and Spanish as well as Mam, but this song sounds to me like it's in Mam:

Ixil is another Mayan language closely related to Mam (although the most closely related language to Mam is Tektitek, which I couldn't find a song in :P). It's spoken only in Guatemala. This is a song in Ixil by Ana Guzmán to the tune of "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele (I'm not sure whether this is actually a translation of that song or not, though). The title of the video says "the voice of our languages transcends borders" in Spanish (so maybe they were trying to make a point):

[flag=]fr[/flag] Edith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Hqc-NWlNJQ

I remember one of my classmates had this as ringtone on his phone and it rang in the middle of the class, don't know why, but it was so funny, it's just not a song you'd expect from a teenager.

And before looking at the lyrics I always thought she says something like "gregorien" instead of "rien e rien". Yeah, my ears are not meant for French. :silly:

Kaqchikel a.k.a. Kaqchiquel is a language spoken in Guatemala; it's in the Quichean branch of the Mayan language family (Quichean gets its name from Kaqchikel's close relative, K'iche'). This is a song in Kaqchikel called "Ri Tz'unün," meaning 'the hummingbird'. The lyrics are in the subtitles:

One more video from Guatemala on this thread: This one has five kids' songs in Achi. Achi is another Quichean language; in fact, it's almost identical with K'iche' (according to what I've personally heard Nora England claim before :P), but the Achi people consider their language to be different from K'iche' for old political reasons that I forget. Anyway, I'm just listening to the first of these five songs, which is about animals. It's called "Ri Nuchuu Xuloq Awaj." Subtitles are included in Achi along with translations into Spanish and English:

Do you always only listen to music in obscure indigenous languages of Central America, or it this just a kick you're on?

I guess you could say it's a kick I'm on. I travel around the globe and happen to be in Central America now. (I think I started out in like the Caucasus or something, then moved through Russia into North America, then sort of up and down North America, then pretty much just down Mexico and Central America). Then I'll move on to South America and eventually either Europe or Africa, depending on how cold or warm it is here. :silly:

Lol, I don't care for bhangra that much (South Indians...don't necessarily), but I've posted both of those, too. :P

Well, at least the songs you're listening lately are "Indian".

Yep! I have a whole bunch more to go, too. :) Not that many in Central America, though.
