I am interested in vision, the history of vision theory, the nature of light, etc., and am curious about what beliefs people have independent of scientific theory, or had before the advent of science. (I'm familiar with the ancient Greek theories, Galen, Alhazen, etc.) Do people in pre- or non-scientific cultures wonder about how it actually happens that we see? Are there any myths about how we see? Are there any folk conceptions of light based on the suns rays or other natural phenomena? Are there words or idioms in other languages that reveal unique ways of thinking about how we see or what color is. My perennial interest is whether and how people made sense of the fact that we experience color away from our bodies. I would appreciate any interesting thoughts. Referrals to books or articles that might address these kinds of questions would also be appreciated.
