Music in minority languages

So, as the title suggests, I'd like this to be a place where to share music in minority languages.

Here's a hip hop band that sings in [flag=]rm[/flag] Romansh:

Roma language:

Šaban Bajramović, the best Roma jazz musician:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdVVXt29bos

Esma Redžepova, she sings a bit more traditionally:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbxbnxuRrkw

These songs (Djelem Djelem and Chaje Shukarije) are the most popular Roma folk songs alongside Ederlezi.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQUjBV_LHIA

Paraulas:

La Maquina Enfernala a ben lo morre plat
de pòliç de mesura e lo son coma vòs tu
de Maquinas enfernalas i n’a tuchi cantons

sarrats dins la meison a faire i porcons
e tuchi aqui denant a beicar la trasmission...

Fai-te pas comandar dau poder
destissa lo bordel d'la maquina enfernala
fai-te pas comandar dau poder
avisca lo cervel e fai brusar ta flama
Fai-te pas comandar dau poder
destisa lo bordel d'la maquina enfernala
fai-te pas comandar dau poder
avisca lo cervel

La Maquina enfernala s’i gaches ben dedins

That one's in Serbian though. And the singer is probably Muharem Serbezovski and not Šaban Bajramović.

It's about a boy (or a young man) longing to meet his father who went to America to earn some money for the family, got sick and never returned. He would give away all the money just to see and meet his father.

The chorus goes something like this:

Cursed is America
And so is gold that shines
Because of them, the photo of you is fading away
Because of them, I have no father

Found Šaban's vesion in Romani:

Maybe this one would be more your cup of tea? It's less folksy and more jazz-y.

I find those Irish cover versions painful. The speakers are non-native, their pronunciation is totally anglicised, and the translations are awkward and unidiomatic.

It's a completely different situation in Wales. There you have native speakers doing original songs in a range of styles and genres. Some of my faves:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OckWKBaMj4 Genod Droog, "Dal Ni Lawr"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQNo4HNJX98 Derwyddon Dr Gonzo, "Madrach"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JC1JrHWIRlU Anifeiliaid Anhygoel o Flewog (Super Furry Animals) "Pan Ddaw'r Gwawr"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiMwm37kwU4 Meic Stephens, "Y Brawd Houdini"
"Richmond is a real scholar; Owen just learns languages because he can't bear not to know what other people are saying."--Margaret Lattimore on her two sons

This thread is right up my alley, since probably the majority of the songs I post in the "What song are you listening to?" thread is in various minority languages. :P
Ludwig Whitby wrote:These songs (Djelem Djelem and Chaje Shukarije) are the most popular Roma folk songs alongside Ederlezi.

You may know a lot of this already, but I doubt everybody here does: "Djelem djelem" is the Romani anthem, and I'm guessing it may be fair to say that the other two are the most popular Romani songs in the Balkans. I'm less sure about what's popular outside that area, though. For example, further to the east, "Loli Phabaj" seems to be pretty popular, perhaps even more so than either "Čhaje Šukarije" or "Ederlezi":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmhA1993LWY
I've seen a few different versions of the lyrics, but I'm just going to present the one I got from my advisor here:

And'e verdes dragos nane (In the not so pretty garden)
Man piramni šukar nane (My lover is not very beautiful).
Loli phabaj pre činava, xop xop xop (I'll cut apart a red apple, xop xop xop [chop chop chop?])
Jekh vaš Tuke, jekh vaš mange, xop xop xop (One for you, one for me, xop xop xop).
Aj ne nene ne ne nene...

There's another version of "Ederlezi" with the lyrics written out along with a translation into English here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkWa6os0eMA
("Ederlezi" itself refers to St. George's Day; the word comes from Turkish Hıdırellez).

Also featured in Time of the Gypsies is this song, which, as I understand it, is a pretty sad song about a Romani guy being drafted into the army (this video just shows the lyrics, although I'm not really sure they're accurate and the last stanza is omitted, not from the captions but from the video itself):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0mYyzpN_Sk

I've also posted a few Romani songs on the songs thread, namely "Tutti Frutti" from Gadjo Dilo and this Polish Romani song (which I posted here). I'm sure I'll post more Romani songs in future, too. :)

And finally, something that has nothing to do with Romani at all, just because I was just listening to this video in Oshiwambo and this song was playing in the background :P

It's interesting that the most known Roma songs gained wider popularity only after being featured in movies. You've posted the links for:

Loli Phabay in Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven.

Ederlezi in Time of the Gypsies.

Djelem Djelem was featured in a masterpiece called I Even Met Happy Gypsies

And Čhaje Šukarije in Borat. :)

I think (popular) movies sort of force the viewers to be exposed to Romani music more than they otherwise would be. Besides, it's kind of hard to even find Romani music otherwise. Literally every Romani song I have ever heard is on either YouTube or one of Ian Hancock's cassettes (or both).
