Studying some Classical Chinese is obligatory in China. Most of the people I've talked to about it seem to have hated it though.

Reading three or even four Old Spanish works is really common in (Hispanic) Latin America (among people well-off enough to receive a full K-12 education, not to be too provincial). Most people hate it, calling it incomprehensible. Old Spanish is close enough to the modern language to be read without studying it, to a great extent. But to understand and moreover enjoy such works we really need language notes. And yet my particular teacher didn't provide us with ANY notes... :ohwell:
