Favourite Anthems

Postby Ludwig Whitby » 2010-01-06, 12:59

Like the title says, here we should speak about anthems, preferably those we like.

My favourite anthem is the Montenegrin Oj Svijetla Majska Zoro:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewX_loFoOL4

It has powerful, strong lyrics, piercing vocals(at least this version) and great music. It has Montenegro written all over it :) True manly anthem!

Besides this one I like the French one, the famous La Marseillaise, German Deutschlandslied and the Russian
http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=JP&hl=ja&v=fMskoy6PZ9k

And I also like two that aren't used any more:
Serbian anthem(1804-1812) *Vostani Serbie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0hPxgSiGkw
Yugoslav anthem(1943 - 2003) Hej Sloveni http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_in4ysLpVLY

*It was written before the reform of the Serbian language so it is different from modern Serbian, and possibly more understandable to other Slavs.

I think my favourite is the Russian anthem. It sounds so powerful (just like the country). I also like the German, Finnish, Italian and Sammarinese anthems.

British anthem, that's a no brainer :D

I also like Australian, which I find a bit different from other anthems and generally is a bit more optmistic.
I'm also quite fond of our very one, Polish, and Finnish :)

My favorite is probably the South African anthem, although the New Zealand and Finnish anthems are close behind. Norway has a great anthem too, that's not surprising though. :D :partyhat:

The Irish one of course ('Amhrán na bhFiann'), sung in Irish :D

It really is a great anthem, and always invokes a stirring of pride in the hearts of Irish people everywhere (especially when played before a Gaelic or hurling match).

I'm seriously not impressed with that other attempt they introduced for rugby matches though ('Ireland's Call') - makes me cringe every time I hear it! If Unionist players from the 6 counties are not happy to sing Ireland's national anthem then they should not be playing for the IRISH team (and to be honest, I'm not sure there even was a problem in the first place: this could just be another instance of the PC brigade taking over). Also, what's to stop them forming their own team if they want to, like they have for soccer, and then they can sing 'God save the Queen' or whatever else to their hearts' content.

Although mum's family are Manx, I hate the Manx national anthem. Un-inspiring words and dreary tune. Big thumbs down :n:

I'm always amazed when people know several anthems, what the lyrics are about and even have favourites. I hardly know the German one. :? Have heard UK and US, NL as well I think (oh and Esperanto  ), but that's about it and I'm not very fond of either of them.

I personally feel almost exactly the opposite about Amhrán na bhFiann, I think it's boring and uninspiring. 'Ireland's Call', on the other hand, is cool.

P.S. Oh, and big 'sage' for God Save The Queen - the world's suckiest anthem (sorry, Brits).

Ce n'est pas un hymne national, mais j'aime bien Bro gozh ma zadoù, l'hymne de Bretagne.

It's not a national anthem, but I like Bro gozh ma zadoù, the anthem of Brittany.
