Well they still let my poor exchange student friend
O d d C h r i s t i a n F e e t
keep his name even when the meaning is pretty obvious in English  Let me once again stress that he went to the US for a year!

And my host mom, Reiko, is really cute sometimes. She asked me a month after I'd moved in whether I knew why her name became "Penko" in the Ukraine (she went there to hold a piano concert once)

In Russia, but not too much, only among very religious people, due to its meaning.
And I suppose in Ukraine as well (where it's spelt Віра).

Today I met someone with the given name Guillaine. I never would've guessed the spelling from the person's pronunciation, which was /giˈlan/ (and which I misheard as [iːˈlaːn]). When I saw it written, I commented on its unusualness and asked the pronunciation again. "It's a French name," she said, "and I'm probably not pronouncing it right."

Is it a French? I did some searching and can't find much in the way of examples; it's not in any of the reference books I have to hand for French personal names. If anything, it looks like an attempt to feminise and Frenchify Guillén. (She had a Spanish surname and added, "The Spanish pronunciation would be [giˈlaine] [sic!].)

The closest French name to that is Ghislaine. Wikipedia claims that "Guilaine" is a variation of this name.

I love the name Rishi too! One of my best friends and coworkers is named Rishi, and when he introduces himself, he always says "Rishi, like fishy" :D

Being a Celtic Languages graduate, I'm kind of biased in favour of Celtic names.

MALE
Irish: Aodh, Caoilte, Connla, Dara, Donnchadha, Fiachra, Mícheál
Scottish: Alasdair, Cailean, Calum, Eachann
Manx: Breeshey, Ealee
Welsh: Gethin, Macsen, Madog, Owain, Rhodri, Tudur

FEMALE
Irish: Aoibhinn, Muireann
Scottish: Iseabail, Seonag
Manx: César, Finlo, Juan, Kerron, Orry
Welsh: Angharad, Anwen, Arianrhod, Nia, Sioned

If I ever have children (not that I intend to!) I'd probably name them from the above list.
The problem? My parents are monoglot English-speakers. They MURDER Celtic names. No matter how many times I tell them the correct pronunciation, they still can't manage it and sound like they're choking/vomiting/clearing their throat/all three! (They did manage to give my sister a Celtic name though.) My mum's attempts to pronounce 'Aodh' (my favourite name) make me want to plug my ears with pink furry earmuffs and hum very loudly in order to drown out the horrible noises she is making!
Tá mé mar atá mé, agus ní fhuil mé gan locht. An té atá saor, caitheadh sé cloch.

(Only kidding... please feel free to correct me anytime!)

This is actually a Biblical name (Aramaic ṭabītā’ "gazelle"). I've never come across an Irish person named "Tabitha" and don't even know what form this would take in Irish. (Perhaps Taibithea?) Within the Anglosphere, Old Testament Hebrew and Aramaic names are largely an American phenomenon.

How do you guys all know so many names? I have never thought of what names I like the most.
If there's any name I really like it would be Matthijs, which is my brother's name. In can also be spelled like Mathijs, and I have also seen Matijs once. (It's a Dutch name, and google translate pronounces it quite properly)
Also, the names Florine (FLO-REEH-NEH) or Jasmijn (Dutch name, google translate will do here as well for the pronounciation) for girls are quite nice.

And of all of the names above I also think Rivka is a very nice name :D (Probably the best one I have ever heard!)

I'm generally a fan of Japanese and German names. I tend to like Dutch and Italian names as well.

Sometimes I like a name in a certain language but not so much in another one. I like Simon in English but not in Spanish or French, per example.
