The song is based on an old Finnish lullaby.

Thanks for posting that one! What's funny is that even though it's the "standard Finnish folk melody" (or what I will always think of as "Veljo Tormis's Laulusild melody", LOL), for some reason what it also reminds me of is the soundtrack to the Georgian-Estonian movie Mandariinid:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_det5NyEP4
and while the music for that soundtrack was written by a Georgian composer and I don't know whether or not he had any intention of making it sound Estonian at all or purely Georgian (and anyway that's not Finnish), if he did I think he did it brilliantly, because it sounds Georgian but also sounds like it could (almost) work as a melody for either Estonian or Finnish folksongs too. (And if he didn't, well, then never mind. But they go nicely together.)

Trovo le parole tutt'attorno: sugli alberi, nei cespugli, per terra (in realtà: per la strada, durante la conversazioni, mentre leggo). Ne raccolgo quante più possibile. -Jhumpa Lahiri

Wow, that does sound very familiar! Like these guys could at any time start singing along with it:

By the way, this reminded me of the first song in Frozen:
https://youtu.be/1TXc2JbCjmw
The moment I heard the first notes of the men's song (0:50), I knew I had heard it before. That didn't make any sense of course because I was quite sure the song had been composed for the movie, but it was so familiar I couldn't help but wonder how I could've managed to hear it before it had been made!

But then, suddenly, I realised it: it's the theme song of a Finnish cooking show from the 1970s-1990s.
https://youtu.be/572VhrmihwA
The song is apparently called "Finnish Whistler" and it was made by Roger Whittaker, a British singer-songwriter and musician.

I know the rest of the songs do not match, but I can't be the only one who can hear the similarity, right? :D

Faye Wong is one of my favourite artists these days - I've listened to her about 3000 times over the past couple of years - and this song is so beautiful. It was recorded in the 90s and almost forgotten until it was reissued in 2015, so I'm so glad I found it. Although her first language is Mandarin the lyrics are in Cantonese.

Don't even know how I found this but I saw one guy commenting on this saying he teaches Latin and that the grammar is bad (maybe it is, idk) and that her pronunciation is bad. I feel like he was being a dickhead because given how awfully Latin words get butchered in English, it's really not that bad. She pronounces <v> as /v/ and not /w/ but clearly was trying to get the sound of the language right. This dude complained she had aspirated stops instead of unaspirated. Seriously bro? That's such a nitpick.

Linguaphile wrote:This song is listed as by Henry Kaiser and David Lindley; the singer is Iŋgor Ántte Áilu Gaup. Years ago I heard a different version of this song (also sung by Áilu Gaup) on television, with the same lyrics and joiking but without the music (or maybe it had different, less noticeable music; mostly what I remember is the voice). I liked the other version better, but this is the only version I've been able to find since then.

I've found the one from that tv show. It was an episode of Nature from 1990 or 1991 called "Scandinavia: Land of the Midnight Sun" (and also in a 1991 one in Norwegian called "Skandinavien: Nordkalotten"), the songs are called "Arctic Call" and "Land of the Midnight Sun" (music by Steve Marshall, joiking by Iŋgor Ántte Áilu Gaup). The music can be found as tracks #4 and #5 here.

I recently caved in and got a Spotify. I found a lot of good new-to-me music, but this is definitely among the most played

I'm already working on translating lyrics to many of her songs to Greek.

vijayjohn wrote:This is a a clip of religious (Christian evangelical?) music in one of the Banda languages, but I'm not sure which one yet. It's apparently from the Central African Republic and called "Tolotche"; the group is called "Réveil de l'orient," and the producer is Aboubakar Hadji:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tCj1yaKXDU

Here's another video of it, but here it says it is called Kouloukou mou zin Nzapa by a group called Kôdrô and produced by Believe Music. Their album came out in 2010, before this Tolotché video. Maybe the information for the Tolotché video is about the dance group or creator who made the video, using Kôdrô's music. Anyway, it is Christian evangelical music sung in Sängö which is the main and official language of Central African Republic. The word Nzapa means "God".
If you go to the Kôdrô-Topic Youtube page, this group has three albums. This particular song is from volume 3 which is mostly in French. The first two volumes have more songs in Sängö. They are all Christian songs.
