me synkkään aikakauteen / kannoimme ilveillen.
Ken hallitsee sydäntäni / sen veitsellä halkaiskoon,
sillä ainoa rikokseni / on rakkaus pohjaton."
Nyt särähti mandoliinit, / nyt vaikeni ilveilijät.
Oli tytöllä kädessä veitsi, / ja kalpeni katselijat.
Kun karhun huulilta juoksi / pisarat punaiset,
se tyttöön katsoi ja lausui / sanansa viimeiset:
"Oli rakkauteni sinuun / kuin matka perille.
Nyt hiljenee sydämen rumpu. / Oi, ota käsiisi se."
On tarina vanha, jo peittää / sen tomu hiljaisin.
Ja tyttökin unohti kaiken, / ja unohtui itsekin

When in his father's home the girl walked on a wide floor
She did not know what was heavy and what was light
She drove to a fair, without a worry, without a hat
And saw a bear amidst a group of antics
Only one look into the eyes of the jumping bear
And she knew what was heavy and what was light
She forgot her mother and father, and she forgot her childhood
And with the antics, she disappeared
She travelled with the bear, slept the nights next to him
With him, she shared the bread, and the cold, the hunger and the work
And the bear, the bear danced when the girl drummed
And like the sun does to moon, she gnawed his heart
The path ran, the years passed by, still the antics showed their tricks
And in the middle of fire and smoke, cheerful tunes played
But the dancing bear grew weak, he fell to his side
And without rising again, he spoke slowly:
Oh, in the middle of iron and the years of persecution, we brought the light to the dark times with our tricks
The one who controls my heart, may she split it with a knife
For my only crime was never ending love
Now the mandolins creaked, now the antics fell silent
There was a knife in the girl's hand, and the onlookers went pale
When the red drops ran from the bears mouth,
He looked at the girl and spoke his last words:
My love for you was like a journey that reached its destination
Now the drum of my heart quiets down. Oh, hold it in your hand!
The story is old, it's covered by the most silent dust
And even the girl forgot it all, and was forgotten herself too.
