I totally agree, the pledges never worked for me. But that doesn't mean that I don't have them, when I think about it..

 Improve my French, I already have C1/C2 but I think you can always improve yourself
 Finally start to learn Arabic. But I should take a course or something because on my own I'll never make it.
 Be able to prononce the spanish r so people won't make fun of me anymore and then I'll be confident enough to learn more Spanish
 Improve my English and my German, like always
 Learn a lot of things about other nice languages
Native: Dutch - Fluent: French - Advanced: English - Intermediate: German, Catalan, Spanish.

New language I'd like to learn: Swedish

My New Year's pledges are quite simple - I will give my upmost effort to get this right.

Japanese: My main focus for the whole year - reach an upper beginner/lower intermediate level with the aim of passing JLPT 3 (or 2級 if my progress goes exceptionally nicely - though that maybe too enthusiastic)

Spanish: Get a solid foundation in the language. Probably around the A2 level by December.

Well, my biggest goal is to learn Russian.

Then perhaps a bit of Swedish/Norwegian as I can already understand most of either one when written down and it doesn't seem like it would be all too difficult coming from the languages that I already know.

Same thing goes for Spanish, which I once started... but never really followed through with.

Other than that, just keep practicing the ones I already know, difficult to stay completely fluent in several different languages if you're not constantly working at them.

I should try and write in German too...But it would take hours to produce a few sentences. Whoops

Okay, my guidelines for 2009:

My main focus will be on Icelandic: I hope to spend five weeks in Iceland next summer, so I will go on practising as I did this year: reading books and listening to the radio. I've tried to contact Icelanders, but failed, alas. It would be lovely to be able to hold a real conversation in Icelandic and write texts and stories in that language.
German: I've been telling myself for three years that I have to do something about my German. I can read novels and all, but I'm unable to speak or write...because I lack practice. So I'll try to practice...(I bet I'm going to laugh at this next year  )
Hungarian: go on learning it. If I manage to read a novel, that would be great.
Latin: refresh it. I've forgotten so much.
Finnish: I want to learn this language very badly. I'll try to refrain from jumping on Finnish grammars until next August.
Lebanese: speak it more often at home.

Good year ahead.

My goals are:
1. To focus on my Spanish, that means reading a lot, doing excersices, focus on tenses...
2. Portuguese, pretty much the same as with Spanish.
3. Reading a lot of books in Norwegian.
4. Practice my English every day, including pronunciation.
5. Revive my Russian hopefully.

We have an unhealthy lack of Icelanders on UniLang. It seems like a year ago there were at least a couple regular posters.

Egein and Almar, I remember them. Would be nice to have them back.

There's also a couple of regulars that have some advanced skills in Icelandic if I'm not wrong, like JackFrost or nighean-neonach.

I talk to Almar regularly, but I don't know if he'd come back to the forum. Hopefully Egein starts coming back once he finishes his year abroad. Or during...

1. Improve my Scottish Gaelic
2. To read a lot more in Gaelic (Irish and Scottish)
3. To start with Portuguese
4. To find a place where I can get serious with Maori. I really want to learn the language in order to really understand it.
5. To study South Saami during the summer.

Perhaps they're preoccupied by the crisis their country is going through.

Egein and Almar, I remember them. Would be nice to have them back.

The other day I recommended Almar a band in the Currently Listening thread, and then I was like "Damn, but he isn't here!"

Kürzlich habe ich Almar eine Band im Hört Gerade Thread empfholen und dann dachte ich "Er ist nicht hier aber! Verdammt!".

I'm kind of glad I've gotten rid of my addiction to Unilang! I still come here...but nearly uniquely to ask for corrections in Finnish. Pretty selfish I know.

If you have any particular question that you can't find an answer to and that hasn't been answered in months and months, just send me a line to strakur@gmail.com and I'll most likely answer. I am, after all, always on gmail if I am on the internet.

yey.

I am finally going to France this year so my goal is to be able to have a conversation with a French person there. I know it doesn't seem like much but it will be a big deal for me as I have only ever really talked to people in French who have lived in New Zealand for a long time or only on the internet. So yeah, that's my only real language goal. Who knows what the year will bring though. I may just pick up another language as I am really starting to feel confident in French.
