Have you tried to learn a foreign language by yout not nativ

Postby polishboy » 2008-12-26, 15:23

My native language is Polish, but English resources are more abundant, and also I was learning some foriegn languages from Japanese or Korean... also from Chinese...
maily from written resources... since my listening skills are not so good (except for English)...
but anyway I learned ...
I think it is fun way of learning, and not so hard as many people could think.

If you're proficient in the language there's no problem. It's not necessary to be a native speaker.

I do that all the time. My German isn't native but there are plenty of materials in this language... overall, I recommend any polyglot-to-be to pick up German early and use it didactically. Next up would be French (native for me, so your question doesn't apply) and Russian (I am hideously bad in this language, but there is SO MUCH information and so many good books in Russian, especially for the less-studied languages of Central Asia, Siberia, and the Caucasian and Ural mountains) and perhaps, if you're old-fashioned, Latin, as there used to be many textbooks and wordbooks in Latin before French, German, and English took over.

So long as you can reasonably follow what is being written, you'll be fine.

I speak Swedish as native language, but I would like to return to my roots and learn to speak the Wallon language some day, but all the information on the web regarding that language is in French.
All.

I use lots of English-speaking language learning materials, though English is not really my native language, but as I'm completely fluent in it, it doesn't really make a difference. For many lesser used languages there are not many books available in German, or even if there are, I usually prefer to use several books at the same time, and often the English ones are much cheaper to come by as well, as there are plenty available through abebooks etc. You also have a much broader choice and can pick the ones that are of really good quality or suit you best, if you are not restricted to one language.
When I looked at Breton for a short while, I mostly used the French books that were available at our uni library, that was no problem either.

Yeah, I learned Corsican (briefly) through Italian, and Catalan through Spanish (with a strong reliance on my dictionary). I learned Esperanto through Italian (mainly because I needed to brush up on my Italian). I've also been learning BSL through ASL.

I learn German through English. Actually I get to know all foreign languages other than English through English.

I think the only language I... devoted myself to for a short while (as I can't say I learnt it...) exclusively through English was Hungarian...
