ONE Race with two or more 'NATIVE' languges???

Postby null » 2008-08-22, 6:04

Are/Were there races with two or more 'native' languges in use (at the same time)?

by 'native' i mean languages created and developed by themselves, not injected by outsiders or colonizers.

The closest thing you can get is a language with male vs. female speech. The difference is mainly in vocabulary. One example is the Garifuna language.

Lakotan too yeah? I remember reading it somewhere that they erroneously used the Lakotan female speech in Dances With Wolves for those tough warriors.

In Europe you can't find clearly distinguishable ethnicities so I guess this question is not applicable.

[nitpick] By race you really mean nation here, right? [/nitpick] Probably this article on Diglossia is interesting for you.
There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't.

by race, he might mean ethnicity

So, say a remote distant and untouched tribe of the amazon rainforest who call themselves the "Insert name here"'s. Would they have developed 2 native languages independantly? It would seem like there was no need, unless their population grew so large that they begin to drift apart, becomming 2 different cultures, and then if they are 1 or 2 ethnic groups begins to be a question.

You don't need to seek far...
It is Chinese.
They are in fact separate languages.
Even though people call it Dialects.
But Chinese consider themselves one nation.
On the other hand Serbian and Croatian is the same languages, but nations are different.
And Tutsie and Hutu...
But I am not sure...
Maybe they are speaking the same languges, but considering themselves as on nation.
