Conlang I'm toying around with. No name yet. Designed to be typed on a QWERTY keyboard with no diacritics or special symbols. "c" = ch (as in cheese), "x" = sh (as in fish), "q" = ng (as in sing).

Country names are simply a close phonetic approximation in the conlang to the names used by speakers of the primary language(s) of the countries.

I made a list of country names in Selvesco. It's again based on Loqu's list, but I added a few countries and on a whim did the four countries of the UK. I also put a demonym under each entry.

The demonyms work as nouns, adjectives, and language names when applicable. The demonyms ending in <-o> are made feminine by changing the <-o> to <-a>. The demonyms ending in <-és> are made feminine by changing the ending to <-esa>, but that is only done when they are used nominally (una fema francés "a French woman" vs. una Francesa "a female French person").

I suppose I ought to post here.
Tikolmian has a number of country/nationality names floating around:
(in alphabetical order)
Alba - Scotland
-albil - Scottish
Anglia - England (I may change this, seeing as we hardly think of the Brits as angels)
-anglil - English
Arylqusz - Erils (concountry)
-arylil - Erilish
Kambria - Wales
-kambril - Welsh
Tikolmia - Tikolmia
-tikolmil - Tikolmian
Tlyfū - Leafoosh (concountry)
-tlyfwil - Leafoosish

The rules for the demonyms -- the ones ending in -il -- are yet to be fully worked out. If preceded by a definite article, they generally refer to the language, and if they refer to the language the article can not under any circumstance be omitted. I suppose context does most of the disambiguating, but if you want to get really specific you can say, for example, zo tlade tikolmila for 'Tikolmian' and qabok tikolmila for '(a) Tikolmian (person)'. I think tikolmila alone may do for the 'person' sense.

You said elsewhere you didn't want Selvesco to be a cookie cutter Romance language, did you not?

Subdivisions of the UK my foot, by the way. It's three separate countries. We will be happier if you acknowledge that. Thank you.

It's interesting to find that a single country name is enough to make it into a cookie-cutter Romance language. I'll take note of that. In any case though, I've never said that I wanted Selvesco to be innovative in every respect (or every last country name).

Who's 'we'? Americans who think they're experts on my country? Which of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland did you forget to count?

Sorry I said anything. I seem to be too bitey. Anyway, thanks for editing your post. :) I think I feel too strongly about things that don't involve me at all.
ffrench wrote:Who's 'we'?
No idea. I actually wondered about that myself. I certainly don't claim to be an expert on your country -- I just have opinions about it that are too strong for my own good and don't fit with my nationality, and it was bound to bother someone sooner or later.
ffrench wrote:Which of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland did you forget to count?
Okay, okay, four countries. Whoops. Sorry, I can't help thinking of Northern Ireland as being part of Ireland as opposed to part of the UK, so I go around saying that the UK has 3 countries. Time to get in step with the twenty-first century, I guess.

For whatever reason I have recently been gathering country names in Stocqéej (AKA Blatant Romlang II :P ), so why not show them here! For a national adjective, simply remove last letter if it's a vowel, and add -éej [ei̯əʒ]

Concontinent Zelia
žeŋ - Jegn [ʒẽ]
Scehna - Scqéna [ɪ'skei̯na]
Konam - Cunàm [ku'nam]
sžeŋ repülb mlyrny - Jegns Repùblia Demokratika [ʒẽs re'publi.a demokra'tika]
Ļigoḑe - Ligothé [li'gotʰei̯]
Ekskipi - Èxcqibi ['ekskibi]
Ṽiøyɍ - Viur ['vi.ur]

Americas
USA - Amèrigas Uniféi Stati (AUS) [a'merigas uni'fei̯.i 'stati]
Canada - Cànada ['kanada]
Mexico - Mehicu [me'h/çiku]
Jamaica - Ģamaeca [dʒa'mai̯ka]
Cuba - Cuba ['kuba]
Haiti - Haiyti [ha.'iti]
Dominican Republic - Domenicqéeja Repùblia [domeni'kei̯əʒa re'publi.a]

Europe
Portugal - Bhòrtughel ['b(ʱ)ortugel]
Spain - Spagngnn [ɪ'spãj]
Andorra - Andorha [an'dor̥a]
France - Fragnsç [vrãʃ]
Monaco - Monacu [mo'naku]
Italy - Itàgl [i'taj]
Germany - Germàgnn [dʒer'maj]
England - Enlêtera [enlə'tera]
Switzerland - Suis [swis]
Belgium - Belgi ['beldʒi]
Luxembourg - Lǔxêmburg ['lyksəmburg]
Netherlands - Nědêrlagn ['nei̯dərlã]
Poland - Poloignn [po'lo.i]
Greece - Rhéesç/Helas [r̥ei̯əʃ] ['helas]
Albania - Arbàgnn [ar'baj]
Macedonia - Makedoignn [makedo.i]
Serbia - Sêrbày [sər'baj]
Montenegro - Montàgnnanerj [mon'tajanerʒ]
Russia - Rusq [rusk]

Asia
China - Scina ['ʃina]
Japan - Nion/Japon ['ni.on] ['ʒapon]
And that's where I stopped; and for good reason!

NB: Stocqéej spelling to pronunciation is entirely regular (or it would be too complicated for my tiny brain to handle) and the reason it uses the letter K so freely is because Stocq was originally a Greek colony.
Project Zelia is not dead - it is only sleeping. Long live project permanently unnamed!

Xupaca - Gakxiirou - Tawʒessò - Ōrgadūvk - Maxyrteser

In Bhéki[be'kaɪ] the suffix for country is -kénäs[kenαs]. Demonym is commonly hâa-[haɪ], hâau- before a vowel sound, meaning "in relation to"; for the adjective/language, use the demonym form plus -u[ə], an undefined adjective ending (masculine is -uv; feminine is -uz; and neuter is -uvi[əvaɪ]: these are nominative endings mind you.) The vowels are always pronounced the same(this includes the changes diacritics make a as in cake, e as in feet, i as in pike, o as in doe, u as in putt. Figure out the diacritics thusforward.

I had some time on my hands, so I updated my country list. I've put in the feminine forms of each demonym. I've also added a derivation that Selvesc has - "-ìn/ina" - which indicates that a person was born in the country (or other geographic area) in question. For example, a person can be francés by being a French citizen (native or not) or simply by identifying that way. However, only a native-born Francés can be called francìn.

A few interesting entries include Wales (yes, that archaic form is a bit unfortunate for anglophones), Switzerland (its default and native demonyms are completely unrelated), and Argentina (the only country with identical default and native demonyms).

OK, these are not all necessarily country names per se, but I've included them anyway because they are at least geographical.

The Americas - Grrowrrr grrarrr (literally 'cougar home')
Africa - Afrricagrrowrrr grrarrr (lion home)
China - Brrr grrowrrr grrarrr (snow leopard home, or more literally 'cold cougar home')
Japan - Burrurrugrrowrrr grrarrr (similar to 'China', but with more vowels; this name is much more tentative)
India (or at least some region including India) - Pappangrrowrrr grrarrr (tiger home)
Siberia - Brrr Pappangrrowrrr grrarrr ('cold tiger home' > Siberian tiger home)
Iran - Chackogrrowrrr grrarrr (leopard home)
