However, I'm still in the very basic stage of the language but improving faster than I thought. Probably that's due to my knowledge of Spanish, but when I was there I couldn't even say basic stuff such as "faleminderit" or "miremengjes" for the first couple of days and it sounded sooo much more complicated than other languages

I've been living in Tirana for the past few months and have a good understanding of Albanian grammar, so if the grammar is confusing you just hit me up and I can help. My vocab index is still quite basic but I'm going to start reading/analyzing some Albanian novels to improve in that sector. It's a very unique language and I've been having fun trying to learn it.

Re: How do Albanian Muslims refer to the Muslim world?

I doubt it. That seems like a cultural construction, one that probably also isn't present in Central Asian Muslim countries. I would just say "Muslim countries" or "Muslim world" to be safe.

Unfortunately it seems Albanian has lost its forum. I'm still learning the language - anyone else?

I've lately been working on vocab and reading comprehension, mainly just reading news articles and jotting down words I'm not familiar with.

hello Keystone,

I'm basically also still learning Albanian. I have just put it a bit on a hold, as it is really a minor language and I need some other stuff more urgently. And it is sooo depressing to find enough interesting material for the language :(

Any ideas?

Yes. I admit earlier in my "career" I through that out quite a bit. I try to be more careful nowadays.

Are there any new details concerning "Discovering Albanian 2"? Will they actually publish it and when? And is there any other new material for Albanian available? It is so hard to find sufficient and reasonably good material for the language :(

Tungjatjeta.

I have a question regarding the pronunciation of the Albanian language. More specifically, letters "Gj" "Q", "L", "Ll", "R" and "Rr".

What is the proper way of pronouncing them? Regarding the "Gj" and "Q", if you are familiar with other Balkan languages, are they pronounced as Macedonian "Ѓ" [Ǵ] and "Ќ" [Ḱ], or as Serbian "Ђ" [Đ] and "Ћ" [Ć]? In Macedonian, they are palatalized "G" and "K" (/ɟ/ and /c/), while in Serbian, they are palatalized "D" and "C" [or "T"] (/dʑ/ and /tɕ/)?

It's written almost everywhere that they are pronounced as in Macedonian. However, when I hear spoken Albanian, they sound exactly the same as in Serbian (my native language).

Now, for the "L" and "Ll", there are 2 versions of their pronunciation that I know. Which one is correct?

1.The first one is, that the "L" is "Љ" [Lj] /ʎ/, and that "Ll" is "Л" [L] /l/. In this version "Ll" is normal L, but "L" is harder.
2.However, in the second variant, "L" is "Л" [L] /l/, and "Ll" is "Ӆ" [Ł] /ɫ/. Here, "L" is the normal L, but "Ll" is softer. Which variant is proper?

Same situation is also with "R" and "Rr". I also know 2 variants.

1.First one: "R" is a "R" like in English /ɹ/, and "Rr" is an alveolar tap/flap /ɾ/. Like in, for example, Sr/Mk, Italian, ...
2.While, in the second version, that normal R like in Sr, Mk, It,... is actually "R" /ɾ/, while "Rr" is an alveolar thrill /r/, like in Spanish "buRRito."

- Can you tell me what is the correct way of pronouncing these letters?
Hopefully someone can help me.
Shumë falemenderit! :D

Gj and Q are pronounced as in Macedonian. They may be given slight or heavy frication, which will sound like [d͡ʑ] and [t͡ɕ] respectively. But gj [ɟ(ʝ)] and q is [c(ç)].

L is light [l], and Ll is dark [l̴].

R is [ɾ] (not sure if [ɹ] is possible :hmm: ), Rr should be [r].

Exactly... Listen to the first video, how he says the word "shkronja". He says it as: /ʃkɹɔɲa/, and then at 19:31, he says "shkronja R" and pronounces it as clean /ɹ/, and even later, he says /ɹɔbɔti/. Same thing goes for the second video, at 5:57...

That's exactly the problem I have. Everybody says it's pronounced as /ɾ/, while it's actually pronounced as /ɹ/. Listen to the audio examples:
/ɾ/ = https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ar_tap.ogg
/ɹ/ = https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ximant.ogg

Same for the other letters. You say that "Gj" is /ɟ/, while it's actually /dʑ/.
/ɟ/ = https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... losive.ogg
/dʑ/ = https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ricate.ogg

Also, "Q" isn't /c/, but /tɕ/:
/c/ = https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... losive.ogg
/tɕ/ = https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ricate.ogg

- Listen to these audio examples and tell me which one sounds more like the way you say the letter. :)

Can anyone translate these two albanian songs? I know only that the first one is from Kosovo and the second one from Albania.

I'm especially interested in Kosovo dialect. How do Kosovo Albanian differ from Standard Albanian?

@ kira-akira

The first song is in Kosovo Albanian (only the refrein is in Standard Albanian):

your smile and your voice come to me by wind
your eyesight and your lips get enlighted to me by spring (2)
walking slow around sky like a fairy
i hear your name in the wind , i think i see you

something that gets broken
and when it get sticked again is noted
the say wine speaks the truth
people usualy express themselves when they are drunk
tomorrow when i open my door all problems come back
and you walk away like dream and i follow you with wind
with the hope that i will touch you i try again and again
but wasting and this time 'cause noone says a thing for us
as long as we were happy people's mouth never stopped
and now we go around lost like it never had a value
daaamn how much i miss you
i want to kiss your forehead
i beg you to come back
i wanna be with you from second to first
forget gold , royal life ,trips and julius caesar
they are surreal like you my fairy
no apology , after break up tears fall and drain
this decision making gives me strength to accept fault
i want to win the weight 'cause i cant feel my hand holdin it
when you hear my voice i know you are gonna cry

your smile and your voice come to me by wind
your eyesight and your lips get enlighted to me by spring(2)
walking slow around sky like a fairy
i hear your name in the wind , i think i see you

lost is bitterly when 2 realted persons break up
at the end i know a break up come like silence without sounds
and im convinced that perfect we are not born
but to improve and feel, not without reasons
now its fashion , lets break up , or whatever
a not important conversation , i'm drinkin a lot
i know that you are far but i can hear you too much
loneliness is eating me inside when i know that you ain't mine
wounds at the end cure and whats left are just scars
fire , my heart is getting grilled
just like shingle , alive or dead we end
like a fairytale with angels and demos , the situation is really bad
i cant take on my self to face the truth
memories get lost , these i have decided to keep em on the paper
my heart is frozen its getting colder and im thirsty
when i see your silhouette you get my smile back

your smile and your voice come to me by wind
your eyesight and your lips get enlighted to me by spring(2)
walking slow around sky like a fairy
i hear your name in the wind , i think i see you
