Zhuang language (Vahcuengh)

Postby モモンガ » 2011-04-23, 10:45

There is no any article on this forum about this.
It's the biggest ethnic minority in China, they used to write using Chinese characters, but now they transfered to Latin.

I know how to say hi: mwngs ndej?
There are not many resources on it, just some books in Chinese, and an online course (jp and en).

I wish this language still used the crazy alien letters from the 50's it used to be written with:

Bouч bouч ma dəŋƨ laзƃɯn couƅ miƨ cɯyouƨ, cinƅyenƨ cəuƽ genƨli bouчbouч biŋƨdəŋз. Gyɵŋƽ vunƨ miƨ liзsiŋ cəuƽ lieŋƨsim, ɯŋdaŋ daiƅ gyɵngƽ de lumз beiчnueŋч ityieŋƅ.

Alas... :D

copula: dwg

gou dwg hagseng = I am student
gou = I
hagseng = student

negative: mbouj

gou mbouj hagseng

questions:

mwngs dwg mbouj dwg hagseng? - are you student?
you be not be student?
Same as Chinese, but it's more related to Thai, so you write "sky blue", and not "blue sky" like in Mandarin.
The grammar seems simple.
I will summarize there things I have learned, I hope someone can study a little from it.
I have dictionary with the characters, but i cannot type them here! unicode even does not support them.

I reccomend you should download the free character dictionary, so you can look up the characters if you are interested, it's a freeware (wikipedia posts link to it) it's in Chinese, so you will need to know it.
But you don't have to lean the characters of course, just if you already know Chinese, it could be quite useful.

A lot of Chinese borrowings, 學生 = hagseng.
There is wikipedia version in Zhuang as well

That is so close to Korean "haksaeng" that it made me do a double-take.

Vietnamese: học sinh - pupil or highschool student

No grammar is simple, unless it's a newly formed creole.
If Zhuang is related to Thai, I guess the boundary between grammar and lexis must be unclear. That's a shared characteristic of Indochinese languages.

And Cantonese hohksāang, all from a reconstructed Middle Chinese *hæwkʂæŋ. It's just the first example I've seen where the vocalism lines up so closely. (Despite the spelling, Korean ae is really [ɛ].)

yes, it's indeed very similar.
actually the least similar reading seems to be Mandarin, = xuesheng.
Zhuang shares vocabulary with other languages of the region, so if you already know some of the CJKV you will have great advantages.

to draven: well, I think there may be some hard points in grammar of isolating languages, but i think as they don't have any conjugation... but it's maybe because i am not so advanced ...

Yeah, I'm basically with ILE. Zhuang is a fascinating language and all, but there are so few resources to be found for it (especially in English), that I think I'll just work on Hmong some day (maybe).

Though soldier on モモンガ!

Thanks! I am learning already all cjkv languages, that learning a little of the least known "family member" can be a little fun.
Moreover i had a girlfriend who was Zhuang...
though it seems it's not a very useful language despite having so many natives.
