Kalaw Kawaw Ya/Kalaw Lagaw Ya

Postby Struthiomimus » 2010-12-22, 2:42

The Western and Central Torres Strait Island language (Kalaw Lagaw Ya) is a Pama-Nyungan language with a strong Papuan influence spoken on islands in the Torres Strait between Australia and Papua New Guinea. I’ve been interested in this language for a while, but was stuck due to the lack of materials on the language. Until księżycowy came upon this:

Heck to the yeah. :D

And then there’s the Wikipedia article, which is pretty substantial:

Hopefully more info will become available on KLY. 8-)

I came across this link a while ago:

http://www.arts.gov.au/sites/default/fi ... t-2005.pdf

It's the NILS 2005 report on the state of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders' languages. I could have just as easily put this in the Arrernte, Warlpiri, or Pitjantjatjara threads, but this thread needs some love :partyhat: I haven't read through the whole thing yet, but at first glance, the future of KLY doesn't look so good :|
