Yes, Khachaturian was such an influential 20th Century period composer! :D I actually performed his Lermontov Suite with an orchestra I used to be with - great fun! It's a pity that he regularly burned many of his pieces and that we do not have access to them. The sabre dance is definetely my favourite scene from that ballet and I'm sure (hope!) that everyone here knows it. (from the ballet Gayane)

Hi everyone! I'm not very familiar with armenian music but from the little I know... I love it...
ego wrote:Arto Tuncboyaciyan, known in Turkey as Tuncboyaci, is a great Armenian composer too. Some of his songs became very famous here when sung by Greek singers. I remember one song "ta kormia kai ta maxairia" (the bodies and the knives) by E. Arvanitaki. He has composed lots of songs for Sezen Aksu too

ego, I was just going to mention the - so talented - Armenian composers that have collaborated with Eleftheria Arvanitaki (who happens to be my most favorite greek artist!) numerous times in the last... 10 (or more?) years! Arto Tuncboyaciyan as you said and Ara Dinkjian. In fact Eleftheria's whole album "/Ta kormia ke ta maheria/ The bodies and the knives" consists of Ara's music ONLY. It truly is one of my all-time-favorite albums.

I was wondering, how famous is Ara over there, in Armenia?

Greetings from Greece =)

Armenian Hand Writing

Postby Senyani » 2006-12-22, 13:24

I was just wondering what Armenian hand writing looks like ( both print and cursive ). Does any one have any images of their hand writing in Armenian?

I don't currently have any images of my handwriting, but if you want to see the printed and cursive forms of the letters,
 http://www.learnarmenian.com/NonArmenia ... menian.cfm

I just got a camera phone, so if I figure out how to use it, then I'll be glad to show you at least my own handwriting...

EDIT: Note that this link gives you the pronunciations of Eastern Armenian. This is not the dialect that I am studying and is also not the dialect of the course.

Hayana

Postby Threadwrapper » 2007-01-13, 9:31

Hello!

I am a translator in Jerusalem. I was given the French translation of the Italian translation of a poem written by a 93 year old Armenian priest who has lived here for some time. The translation I received includes the line Je suis enfant arménien, je suis d'origine hayana (I am an Armenian child, I am of hayana origin). I know that "hay" means [an] Armenian [person], but I have the feeling that there has been some distortion along the line. Can anyone translate "hayana" for me, or give me an idea of what it should be?

Thank you so much!

I've had a day to track down the meaning of 'Hayana' and my dictionaries come up with nothing. The Armenians I've asked responded with blank stares. :para: Perhaps this was mistakenly transcribed 'hayana' instead of 'hayeren' as I believe would be suitable here. My other guess is that it is in Grabar Armenian - a liturgical language, since it was written by a)an older man and b) a priest. This might explain why I am not familiar with the declining of this noun, for I have never seen a noun declined in this way... :? But then again, I won't claim fluency in Armenian either. I'll keep asking around - I'll be sure to let you know if I find something. :) Good luck in your search.

Thank you for taking all this time and trouble. A transcription error does seem very likely. I'll see if I can track that down.

Thanks again.

I love to have at least to have grammatical base in this ancient fascinating language. But I would prefer Western Armenian instead of Eastern Armenian for many reasons. The writing scares me a lot.

Welcome to Unilang and to the Armenian forum chaofarangset! :)

Another useful keyboard would be the one found at http://www.freenet.am/armnls/ which is included in the course. The installation permits you to see Armenian letters on the Internet, to switch between the two commonly used keyboard layouts in Armenia, it includes a keyboard map and finally allows you to default to the Armenian keyboard. I hope anyone who is interested in learning Armenian will find the Armenian NLS extremely useful. :)

I speak no Armenian at all - I was just browsing the forum. I love the written form of the language and I love Armenian folk music - excellent! Their costumes are nice too. I can't say I'm a fan of the modern pop stuff though, like in the clip, sorry :P But I voted 'yes' because I adore Armenian traditional and traditional-fusion music.

And did he deserve it?
