Tungusic Languages

Postby Tong Duurai » 2008-06-30, 21:34

Anyone here know about the grammatical features of
the Tungusic Languages? Some linguists think they should be in a separate family from Turkic and Mongolic languages-WHY? All I know about them is they have agglutination and Vowel harmony, but Ive never heard or seen any tranliterations of them(like Evenk for example).

Here's a sample of Romanized text in Manchu (it took some time to find a substantial sample).

This site has a brief typological discussion of the Tungusic languages.

(I too would appreciate some further sources about this language family that aren't immediately googleable.)

There appears to be a Wikibook on Manchu with an overview of grammar and some vocab. Does anyone know of any other publicly available materials on Manchu? :?:

This is a set of free video lessons on Manchu. Unfortunately for many, it is entirely in Chinese -- well, if you're serious about any minority language in China you should learn Chinese first anyways.

I have a large book that is parallel-text of the Dream of Red Chamber in Manchu/romanized/Chinese. I can put up samples if you want. Reading through it and pronouncing the language gave me no impression of Altaic. It just felt very distant.
