Qaanaaq wrote:I have gone through the whole book and studied the first chapters in a great detail. It is a typical Hewitt book — full of jargon, nerdy details (like the spelling ‘coöperation’ throughout the book), and it’s hardly any conversational, but still, it is the only book in any language listing complete conjugations, discussing in detail the different ways to count in Abkhaz, etc. In terms of explaining morphology it’s a must. Combined with other materials, such as Самоучитель абхазского языка by Джонуа and Киут and the Abkhaz–Georgian phrasebook, I find this textbook very useful and I’m starting to feel more and more self-confident about my practical Abkhaz skills. :D

Абзиара шәзыҟалааит!

Indeed. I agree, and stand by my (similar) earlier assessment.

It is a competent textbook. It's just a shame it's not conversationally based.

As I still plan on learning at least a little Abkhaz, I'll dive into this book more in-depth soon enough. Probably after I learn some Georgian, which is quite a bit off.

That doesn't surprise me in the least. :P

Some info I posted recently in the Chechen thread. Though I should post it here too:

I'm starting to really want to learn some Abkhaz. I was watching the documentary that zhiguli posted a while back.

Abkhaz sounds quite a bit like Russian to me. I get the feeling if I start learning it, Polish and Russian will follow.

Just found the only Abkhaz-English dictionary that I know of. It can be downloaded, you just have to register.
Dictionary of Common Abkhaz
It's not really useful for the average language learner, but some might still be interested.

It's unfortunate I'm reading this thread in 2013, as these links aren't working. :( Does anyone have the material saved on their computer that they could send to me by e-mail?

There is an Abkhaz resource that is written in Turkish.
http://www.gokoren.com/abhazca-ouml287reniyorum.html

And it's very bad that we have only two or three people who actually know at least a bit Abkhaz and they aren't active these days. The other users that added Abkhaz on their list don't even know Abkhaz, I think.

I've been trying to learn Abkhaz, but the existing resources don't help me improve my Abkhaz. It's very bad!

The three major things that stop me from seriously pursuing Abkhaz is:
a) The cost of materials
b) The lack of an easily obtained and cost-effective dictionary
c) The state and scope of Abkhaz materials in English

Though this might change if/when I learn Russian. At any rate, I have too many other things to do to get hung-up on Abkhaz. I'll probably learn a little using the stuff I already have, but I doubt I'd take it much further.

Hello! I'm wondering if someone might be able to help me with translating a couple monument inscriptions, like this one from a World War II monument in Bzyb/Bzyp:

Image

I think it says something like:
Кашәара ақәым шәыхьӡ ҳаԥсадгьыл зыхьчаз
...but I don't know what that means. Any help would be much appreciated!

Just in case anyone comes to this thread and hasn't seen our poll in the Georgian forum, please check out this poll that will help us decide what to do with the Northwest, Northeast Caucasian, Kartvelian languages and with Ossetic and Armenian.
