Hassaniya Arabic and Maasina Fulfulde (a variety of the Fula language) are both widely spoken languages in Mali. Hassaniya Arabic is mainly spoken in northern Mali but also spoken in the southwestern part of the country. The Tuareg (Imazighen/Berber) languages Tamasheq and Tamajaq are spoken in the northern and eastern parts of Mali. Maasina Fulfulde is mostly spoken south of Timbuktu. Another variety of Fula called Pulaar is spoken in southwestern Mali just south of Mauritania, and yet another variety called Pular, near the border with Guinea. Various Songhai languages are spoken in the eastern part of Mali and along the Niger River where Timbuktu lies, including in Timbuktu itself, where the Songhai language Koyra Chiini is the lingua franca.

Various Dogon languages are spoken near the northern border with Burkina Faso. Many Mande languages are spoken elsewhere in southern Mali, especially varieties of Mandinka in the southwest, and in particular, Bambara. Many Mabia languages are also spoken near the border with Burkina Faso.
