Various Songhai languages are spoken in the eastern part of Mali and along the Niger River where Timbuktu lies, including in Timbuktu itself, where the Songhai language Koyra Chiini is the lingua franca.
Various Dogon languages are spoken near the northern border with Burkina Faso. Many Mande languages are spoken elsewhere in southern Mali, especially varieties of Mandinka in the southwest, and in particular, Bambara. Many Mabia languages are also spoken near the border with Burkina Faso.
