Languages of South Sudan

Postby vijayjohn » 2021-11-13, 18:15

Apart from Sudanese Arabic and Juba Arabic, an Arabic-based creole, the languages of South Sudan fall into the Eastern Sudanic, Central Sudanic, and Ubangian groups. Most of the Ubangian languages seem to be languages that are also spoken in the neighboring Central African Republic (CAR) to the west. The Eastern Sudanic languages are from the Surmic, Daju, and Nilotic branches, but the only Daju language spoken in South Sudan is Njalgulgule on the Sopo River in the northwestern part of the country. The Central Sudanic languages include various Bongo-Bagirmi languages, Moru-Madi languages, the Kresh languages, and Birri, which may be closely related to the Kresh languages depend on who you ask. :P

One of the biggest languages in South Sudan is Dinka, a Nilotic language. This is a thread for Dinka. Dinka and resources for another Nilotic language called Shilluk as well as a Central Sudanic languages spoken in South Sudan called Acholi are also mentioned here.
