Converbs in Turkic languages: -ib vs. -a/e?

Postby do_shahbaz » 2021-05-18, 14:24

I've read that there are two types of converbal suffixes present in Turkic languages (Old Turkic, Turkish, Uzbek, etc.),
viz. -ib (bolup, kelip/gelip, salıp, yazıp/yozib/etc.)** and the so-called 'vowel converbs' ending in a vowel (*bola, *kele, *yaza)**; am not sure if the latter still exists in (Anatolian) Turkish but they still do in Uzbek and Uyghur. Some Turkic languages may have more, but among them these two suffixes are ones that can be seen as the most fundamental/underlying, at least from a historical/diachronical point of view; other suffixes originated from suffixes once serving other purposes in Common Turkic (Uyghur -ça/e seems to be derived from an earlier equative/similative suffix [correct me if I'm mistaken]). Question is, what are the difference, in meaning and usage, between the two suffixes in various Turkic languages? (I am aware that both may significantly differ from one language to another). Are there principles that underlies said differences?
