Why are you interested in Azeri?

Postby eskandar » 2009-04-14, 21:18

This thread is intended to draw out the lurkers and hopefully start some discussion! :) Why are you learning Azeri, or why are you interested in it?

I have many reasons to learn Azeri. Although I am Persian, I consider Azeri to be an important part of Iran's multicultural, multilingual society. Azeris are the second-biggest ethnic group in Iran, after Persians, and I want to learn the language of my "həmvətənlər." I am also very interested in Azeri culture and literature, and learning the language is the best way to get into the rich poetry and cultural traditions. In particular, I am trying to learn Tabrizi, a dialect for which very little learning material exists despite being spoken by the most amount of people. At the same time, I'm learning the Baku dialect, simply because the vast majority of learning material available is for this dialect.

What about you?

I would like to know more about the situation of Azeri in Iran. What do you exactly mean by "we are not allowed to learn stuff in Azeri" ? There is absolutely no Azeri schools in Tabriz ?

No , actually in Iran the government don't allow people with different languages to have schools learning their own languages instaed of Frasi , we can't publish a magazine totally in Azeri , it should be Farsi with 2 or 3 pages in Azeri . Last years with some efforts we can have a course lasting one semester in uneversity of Tabriz but as you know people don't learn to write and read it just in a semester , It's not fair at all , but any way if one wants to learn to read and write in his own language internet is a free reasource . Azeri people here in Tabriz , Iran , speak in Azeri but they can't read or write , It's a shame that the political men of Iran are responsible for it .

I don't know any German, but if you post in the German forum I'm sure you will find someone who can help you. I can read French but I don't know it well enough to teach it. You should contact alijsh, he is Iranian and is fluent in French and English, and I think he knows some German too. Maybe he can help you find good learning materials in Persian.

I want to help revive the Azeri board, so I'll post why I'm interested:

I love all the Caucus countries, they're so interesting to me. I'd like to learn both Azeri and Georgian eventually. Plus I really love Turkic languages, and Azeri is probably the second most popular after Turkish! I also like the sound of Azeri a little bit more than Turkish - I'm not sure why, it's just prettier to me.

Now more people that are actually learning Azeri, tell us why! :D

Hello ILuvEire! :)

I am interested in Azeri because I know many people from Azerbaijan and it shouldn't take much time to learn it after I become fluent in Turkish; written Azeri is relatively easy for me. Not to mention the amazing culture and literature behind it.

I am 18 years old and went alone to Azerbaijan this summer - i am not azeri and know no azeri people - well not until this year anyway!

It was the BEST experiance of my life, for three month, went to many regions with the people I met in the summer school i taught for 1 hour a day in! Incredible!Oldu, mən indi həyata keçirirəm. Mən Azərbaycan sizi sevirəm!
Mən sizin dilinizdən daha çox başa düşmək istəyirəm və yavaş-yavaş öyrənirəm
Mən mənim bu il görüşdüyüm yaxşı dostları görmək üçün yenidən (yenə) gələn il gəlirəm!

I actually learnt alot of 'slang' and 'conversational' azeri and me trying to learn it now from only being able to speak it is really proving difficult! I was in Khachmaz and no one that i socialised with knew english so i took it upon myself to learn as much as i could! I love this country! Finished my second term at university and can't wait to go over again when my year two exams are over!
Need alot more practise with vocab and grammer but everyone keep practising because when we'll all be perfect!

I also can't wait for some more of that cheap vodka (taps his neck on the right side!! azeri style ;))

Thanks for the welcome it's great to find such a forum because looking online has resulted in my finding not many!

Are people still learning more by self-teaching? Are people focussing on grammer or vocab?
I'm starting with grammer so that when I learn more vocab i think it'll be easier to understand due to all the tenses/suffixes which should 'make sense' by then!

Well, I'm interested in Azerbaijani, because it's my mother tongue in fact. Being an Azeri I must maintain the language which is, to my mind, the heart and soul of our culture.

I hope I'll be able to help anyone fascinated with Azərbaycan dili.

Hey, welcome to the forum Utopist!

I am fascinated with Azeri but I am learning Turkish at the moment and I believe mixing them is not a good idea. I am following the Azeri subforum passively though. It is cool to have a native speaker around, I hope you and kalemiye can bring some life into this forum.

As to the question why I am interested in Azeri... I visited Turkey last year and I really liked the language and decided to learn it, and aftewards I got fascinated with other Turkic languages through Turkish (you can read my 'diary' about it here, it's a shame I do not update it anymore). Azeri has a few important advantages for me: a) it is more accessible than some other Turkic languages since Azerbaijan is just about 3 hour flight away from me, and has no visa requirements and b) it sounds cool, like a harsher version of Turkish :)

Thank you. It'd be lovely to have a look at what you have written about these languages. :) I'll definetely read it tomorrow since it's too late so far. :(

I hadn't known that Unilang had its forum, that's the reason why I hadn't been participating herein. :)

I wish the Turkish forum was a lot more active, but unfortunately very few people in the forum are studying this language.

*envy rising*

I wish I could visit the Republic of Azerbaijan, but I don't think that will actually be possible for me anytime soon .
