There are differences but they are mutually intelligible. You know, they belonged to the same society. Azerbaijan was historically part of Iran and we lost it to Russia in 1813 during first Russo-Persian War as a result of Treaty of Gulistan (عهدنامهی گلستان: Гюлистанский договор). In fact most of those small republics of Russia has been taken from Iran in 1800's and the Russian influence is relatively something new. That province of Iran from which this country was separated has now become two provinces: East and West Azerbaijan. Ok. No more off-topic. If you liked to know more just PM me.
