the words to the poem in the clip:

Asla seni görmemişem, dildarym!
Gumrymy sen, bilbilmi sen, näme sen?!
Gamgyn köňlüm hyýalyňda aldaram,
Bag içinde gülgülmi sen, näme sen?!

Ýa müşkmi sen, ýa kokunar anbarmyň,
Aýda bilmen, ýa çarhmy sen, çenbermiň,
Ýa derýamyň, ýa möwçmi sen, lenbermiň,
Ýa girdapmyň, ýa burgunmyň, näme sen?!

Garaçymyň, ýa seýitmiň, hojamyň,
Ýa sakymyň, ýa şerapmyň, ýa jammyň,
Ýa ýylmy sen, ýa gündizmiň, gijemiň,
Ýa Aýmy sen, ýa Günmi sen, näme sen?!

Altynmy sen, kümüşmi sen, zermi sen,
Ýa arşmy sen, ýa kürsmi sen, ýermi sen,
Ýa ýakutmyň, ýa merjenmiň, dürmi sen,
Ýa çyragmyň, ýa röwşenmiň, näme sen?!

Magtymguly, geç namysdan, aryňdan,
El götergil bu wepasyz käriňden,
Jahan doly, sen gapyl sen ýaryňdan,
Meý-mestmi sen, ýa şeýdamyň, näme sen?!

Zhiguli I had found turkmenstudents but it wasn't a language course. So, I didn't post it in the Turkish forum. It's (راهنمای نوشتار درست الفبای لاتین و عربی ترکمنی) manual of writing Turkmen correctly in Latin and Arabic script.

indeed it isn't, but given the dearth of material on this language in general i thought it would be good to post it here. any other links, however brief, about turkmen would be greatly appreciated.

The "Näme Sen" poem by Magtymguly is beautiful (very cool video!). I like it so much I've been trying to translate it, but even with the resources posted here and the small Turkmen dictionary at my university's library, I wasn't very successful. I don't suppose anyone here can translate it, but can anyone help me find a translation of it? It doesn't matter what language-- I can read English, Persian, and most Romance languages. Even Turkish or Russian would be OK because I could translate those to English more easily.
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

I have gone through the links given here and seen that with just a little effort, someone from Turkey or Azerbaijan can speak Turkmen well. I wish the new alphabet were not differentiated that much. It is their choice, though. I respect.

Nadi, how much of the poem posted above (Näme Sen) do you understand? Any chance you'd want to help translate it? :)

I know it is my impudence to translate this beautiful poem of Mahdumkulu, since this is my first "touch" to Turkmen language, but please, take this attempt of mine as the first step to the translation of the poem. I just wanted to give a general idea about the poem. I hope others will show up to make this translation perfect.

The red parts are the parts I didn't understand at all. The other parts are the parts which I more or less understood.

Asla seni görmemişem, dildarym! = I have never seen you, my love!
Gumrymy sen, bilbilmi sen, näme sen?! = Are you a dove, a nightingale, what are you?
Gamgyn köňlüm hyýalyňda aldaram, = I deceive my unhappy heart with your imagination,
Bag içinde gülgülmi sen, näme sen?! = are you a flower in a garden, what are you?

Ýa müşkmi sen, ýa kokunar anbarmyň, = Are you musk or ambergris which is smelled,
Aýda bilmen, ýa çarhmy sen, çenbermiň, = I don’t know if you are the moon, a wheel or a ring
Ýa derýamyň, ýa möwçmi sen, lenbermiň, = A sea , a havoc or a lenber???,
Ýa girdapmyň, ýa burgunmyň, näme sen?! = a whirlwater or a disaster, what are you?

Garaçymyň, ýa seýitmiň, hojamyň, = Are you a Garaçy a descendant of the prophet, or a scholar,
Ýa sakymyň, ýa şerapmyň, ýa jammyň, = Are you a saki(wine server), wine or wineglass,
Ýa ýylmy sen, ýa gündizmiň, gijemiň, = the year, daytime or night,
Ýa Aýmy sen, ýa Günmi sen, näme sen?! = the moon or the sun, what are you?

Altynmy sen, kümüşmi sen, zermi sen, = Are you gold, silver or a jewel,
Ýa arşmy sen, ýa kürsmi sen, ýermi sen, = Are you the seventh heaven, the sky or the earth,
Ýa ýakutmyň, ýa merjenmiň, dürmi sen, = are you ruby, coral or pearl,
Ýa çyragmyň, ýa röwşenmiň, näme sen?! = light or glitter, what are you?

Magtymguly, geç namysdan, aryňdan, = Oh, Magtymguly! Give up your honor and shyness,
El götergil bu wepasyz käriňden, = others took you away from your disloyal kär???
Jahan doly, sen gapyl sen ýaryňdan, = The world is full and you are not aware of your sweetheart,
Meý-mestmi sen, ýa şeýdamyň, näme sen?! = Are you drunk or frenzied, what are you?

I've listened to the Youtube clips a couple of times, and somehow I didn't perceive any particular lisping. I guess the audio quality is rather low.

Are there any other clips where you can hear normal, modern Turkmen spoken?

For attention of Turkic language speakers

Postby nadi » 2008-07-03, 14:41

I have looked into Turkmen language for a few days and have seen that if you are a speaker of a Turkic lanugage, it is really easy to learn Turkmen. Why don't you try it? I see that it is also useful for Turkish spoken in Turkey since it contains many nice idioms and expressions which can be adopted and used. I think it is worth a try.
