kazakh has one of the longer alphabets in cyrillic - 42 letters

(letters marked with an asterisk are only used in russian loans)

а a
ән ä (like german ä)
б b
в v*
г g
ғ gh (like arabic ghayn غ)
д d
е ye/e (ye at the beginning of a word or after a vowel, e elsewhere)
ё yo
ж zh
з z
и ıy/iy (ıy in back vowel words, iy in front vowel words)
й y
к k
қ q
л l
м m
н n
ң ng
о o
ө ö (like german ö)
п p
р r
с s
т t
у uw/üw/w (uw with back vowels, üw with front vowels, w at the end of a syllable or intervocalically)
ұ u
ү ü
ф f*
х kh
һ h
ц ts*
ч ch*
ш sh
щ sch*
ъ (hard sign)*
ы ı
і i
ь (soft sign)*
э e
ю yu
я ya

some further notes:
the letters қ ғ occur mainly in back vowel words. their front vowel counterparts are к and г.
к can be found in all positions of a word, but г and х don't occur at the end of a word, except in foreign loans.
х is not a common sound in kazakh and is mainly found in loan words. it often gets pronounced like қ: хат (also pronounced қат), хабар (>қабар). personal names with х can be spelled with х or қ - Хасен/Қасен; Халима/Қалима.
ғ is the voiced counterpart of х/қ and never occurs at the end of a word. in loans from arabic, it replaces the letter 'ayn ع:
ғалым عالم scientist, scholar
сағат ساعت hour
һ is also a fairly rare sound in kazakh, and is found only in loan words and some exclamations:
аһ, уһ, еһе, аһа, гауһар/жауһар (گوهر\جوهر jewel), қаһарман (قهرمان hero), жиһан (جهان world)

vowel harmony

just like most other turkic languages, kazakh has vowel harmony. all vowels in native kazakh words must be either front or back. loan words and some suffixes (like бала-мен - "with the child") do not conform to vowel harmony.
front vowels: і э/е ө ү ә
back vowels: а о ы ұ
и/у can be either front or back depending on the other vowels in the word.

stress as a rule falls on the last syllable of a word. if suffixes are added, stress shifts on to the suffix.

(as i'm not actively studying this language at the moment my notes here will be more scattered and sporadic, but hopefully someone will find them interesting/useful.)

kazakhstan has recently announced its plans to switch to a latin alphabet:

http://www.rferl.org/featuresarticle/20 ... 11591.html

http://www.nomad.su/?a=3-200610310116

if this happens the number of central asian republics using cyrillic will drop to 2 (or 3, if we count mongolia) - kyrgyzstan (where the adoption of a latin alphabet has also been discussed) and tajikistan (where attempts to reintroduce the persian/arabic alphabet fell by the wayside after the civil war). kazakhstan however does have the financial resources to carry out such a move, a lack of which has stalled efforts to switch to latin in other countries (like uzbekistan).

sound correspondences between turkish and kazakh (more examples will be added as they turn up):

ş > с (s):
baş - бас (bas) head
kış - қыс (qıs) winter
iş - іс (is) work/matter/thing
diş - тіс (tis) tooth
kaşık - қасық (qasıq) spoon

y > ж (j):
yüz - жүз (jüz) face
yok - жоқ (joq) not
yol - жол (jol) road
yüzük - жүзік (jüzik) ring
yulduz - жұлдыз (juldız) star

ç > ш (ş) (the "ch" sound does not exist in native kazakh words)
saç - шаш (şaş) hair
ikinci - екінші (ekinşi) second
aç - аш (aş) open (imperative)

b > м (m):
burun > мұрын (murın) nose
boyun > мойын (moyın) neck
bin > мың (mıŋ) thousand

suffixes are a bit trickier in kazakh than in turkish. the plural suffix, for example, which has only two variants in turkish (for front and back vowels) has six in kazakh:
-лар/-лер
-тар/-тер
-дар/-дер

(as a comparison, tatar has four variants:
-лар/-ләр
-нар/-нәр

kyrgyz has 12:
-лар/-лор/-лер/-лөр
-дар/-дор/-дер/-дөр
-тар/-тор/-тер/-төр

and yakut has 16:
-лар/-лор/-лэр/-лөр
-дар/-дор/-дэр/-дөр
-тар/-тор/-тэр/-төр
-нар/-нор/-нэр/-нөр)

the choice is determined by the final letter of a word (as well as vowel harmony):

after vowels and the letters р, й, у, the ending is -лар/-лер:
бала-лар child-ren
әке-лер father-s
дәптер-лер notebook-s

after sonorants л, м, н, ң and the spirants з, ж, the ending is -дар/-дер

мал-дар cow>cattle
қалам-дар pen-s
сөз-дер word-s

after voiceless consonants and the voiced stops б, в, г, д the ending is -тар/-тер

қазақ-тар kazakh-s
мектеп-тер school-s

the question particle ма (corresponding to turkish -mi/-mı/-mu/-mü is also subject to similar rules.

for words ending in vowels or the sonorants р, й, у, л the ending is ма:

мынау терезе ме? is this a window?
анау балға ма? is that a hammer?

for words ending in ж, з or the sonorants н, ң, м the ending is ба/бе:

мынау қағаз ба? is this paper?
анау қалам ба? is that a pen?

words ending in a voiceless consonant or б, в, г, д take the suffix па/пе:

мынау мектеп пе? is this a school?
анау зауыт па? is that a factory (зауыт - from russian завод)?

a couple of kazakh songs. a modern one:

Арман жолдар

Жолдар жолдар келем жолда сапар кешiп
Бұлттар бұлттар бiзбен бiрге қатар көшiп

Досты сүйген жүрегiммен сүйiм елiм
Туып өскен алдында бас ием елiм.

Жолдар жолдар бiрге болсын сапарымыз
Жұлдыз өшiп сиреп қалмай қатарымыз
Үмiт болып туа бершi Алдан жолдар
Алыс алыс жетелей бер арман жолдар.

and something more traditional:

found the archives of a mailing list with kazakh lessons:

http://content.mail.ru/pages/p_14572.html

they are using a cyrillic transcription (presumably for people who cannot display the proper kazakh letters on their computers)

i've been studying kazakh a lot more lately to the detriment of other languages (and yes, it probably has to do with borat in some way or other) so i'll be posting lessons/notes here very soon.

to start, let's take a look at the demonstratives.

мынау this
анау that
by cutting off the final -у you get the demonstrative adjectives:
мына студент this student
ана қыз that girl
there are other demonstrative adjectives:
бұл this
осы this
сол that
etc.
but we will stick to мынау/анау for now.

мынау не? what is this?
анау кім? who is that?

мынау қалам - this is a pen.
анау әке - that is father.

as you can see, the verb "to be" does not appear in 3rd person subject sentences.

кітап жақсы. the book is good.
оқулық жаман. the textbook is bad.

to negate these sentences, the word емес is added at the end.

мынау қарындаш емес. this is not a pencil.
анау қағаз емес. that is not paper.
қағаз жаман емес. the paper is not bad.

pronouns:
мен - i
сен - you (informal)
сіз - you (polite)
ол - he/she/it
біз - we
сендер - you (informal, plural)
сіздер - you (polite plural)
олар they

question words:
не? what
кім? who
қайда? where/to where ("whither")
қайдан? from where("whence")
қандай? what kind of/how
(ол қандай адам? what kind of man is he)
қалай? how
(хал қалай? how are you [lit. health/condition/situation])
қанша/неше? how much
қашан? when

sentences that do not contain a question word use the particle ма-ме/ба-бе/па-пе.

the choice depends on vowel harmony and the final consonant of the word that precedes it.

after vowels and р, й, у, л - ма/ме.
адам егде ме? is the man old?
анау дәптер ме? is that a notebook?

after the fricatives ж, з and the nasal consonants м, н, ң - ба/бе.

қалам жаман ба? is the pen bad?
мынау қағаз ба? is this paper?

after voiceless consonants and б, в, г, д - па/пе.

мынау мектеп пе? is this a school
ол жас па? is he young?

this pattern of assimilation is a normal one in kazakh. all other suffixes beginning with м/б/п behave in exactly the same way.

сәлемет пе, timpul мырза, қош келдің форумға

i'm a bit busy right now so i can't make any promises about new lessons, but your best bet if you're learning through english are the peace corps manuals, which can be downloaded at the links below:

Kazakh Language Course for Peace Corps Volunteers in Kazakhstan.

Kazakh: Language Competencies for Peace Corps Volunteers in Kazakhstan.

Ассалаумғалейлкум!

Мен сени суём!

Lol I hope that was right. I think I might try to learn Kazakh out of that book. It doesn't seem like the best method but I'll give it a try.

Apparently "мен сени сүйөм" is Kyrgyz. Kazakh would be "мен сені сүйемін", "мен сені жақсы көремін" or (more literary, according to a poster on this forum) "мен саған ғашықпын". Good luck with Kazakh!

Some interest has been shown in this language, so I will be translating the lessons from the mailing list archive linked to upthread. Since those lessons are tailored to Russian speakers I will be leaving out those points that don't directly concern English speakers, and adding a few notes of my own (though I may opt for a verbatim translation if that is preferred).

Lesson 1
Бірінші сабақ

Kazakh, like other Turkic languages, is an agglutinating language, unlike English, which is isolating with traces of inflection. Words are built up of invariable roots and endings which can be added one after the other in a chain:

жазушыларымыздағы that which is on/at our writers
жаз the root "to write" (*also the singular imperative form)
жазушы "writer"
лар the plural ending > жазушылар "writers"
ымыз the possesive ending "our" > жазушыларымыз "our writers"
да the locative ending "in/at" > жазушыларымызда "on/at/in our writers"
ғы adjective-forming suffix > жазушыларымыздағы "that which is at our writers"

Kazakh has no prefixes, it also lacks grammatical gender (*and articles):

қыз келді - the girl came
жігіт келді - the young man came

Word order in Kazakh is fairly rigid, though in poetry or in colloquial speech some words can change places. The subject stands at the head of the sentence, then the object, with the predicate at the end. Adjectives stand before the nouns they modify (this rule is never broken). The predicate does not necessarily have to be a verb, it can also be a noun, an adjective, etc. In this case a copula is not required (*in the third person, see below) as it is in Western European languages. For example:

Нұрлан хатшы
Nurlan secretary
"Nurlan is a secretary."

Сәкен дәрігер
Säken doctor
"Säken is a doctor."

Әлім інім
Älim my-brother
"Älim is my brother."

Айгүл студент
Aygül (university)student
"Aygül is a student."

To form negative sentences of this type the word емес is put after the word it negates:

Мынау хатшы. This is a secretary.
Мынау хатшы емес. This is not a secretary.

Мынау қант. This is sugar.
Мынау қант емес. This is not sugar.

Ержан суретші. Erzhan is an artist.
Ержан суретші емес. Erzhan is not an artist.

To form questions the question words кім? "who" or не? "what" is required. Кім is only used of people, and не is used for all other living and non-living objects, including animals.

Андрей кім? Who is Andrey? ("Andrey who?")
Андрей еңбекші. Andrey is a worker.
Мынау кім? Who is this?
Мынау інім. This is my brother.
Мынау не? What is this?
Мынау дәптер. This is a notebook.

Other words that can be used as predicates include бар "there is"; жоқ "there isn't"; көп "(there is) a lot"; аз "(there is) little", керек, қажет "is needed".

Examples:
Су бар. There is water.
Су жоқ. There is no water.
Адам көп. There are lots of people.
Дәптер аз. There are few notebooks.
Сүлгі керек. A towel is needed.
Не қажет? What is needed?

Question particles

There are two ways to form questions in Kazakh - the first way is with question words. The second (when a question word does not appear in the sentence) is with the question particle.
The question words не, кім were introduced above. Particles are unstressed and are put at the end of sentences. Without them a statement is affirmative, with them - interrogative.

Мынау алма. This is an apple.
Мынау алма ма? Is this an apple?

Мынау дәптер емес. This is not a notebook.
Мынау дәптер емес пе? Isn't this a notebook?

Анау алмұрт. That is a pear.
Анау алмұрт па? Is that a pear?

Әсем дәрігер. Äsem is a doctor.
Әсем дәрігер ме? Is Äsem a doctor?

Қалам бар. There is a pen.
Қалам бар ма? Is there a pen?

The question particle has different variants. The correct variant is determined by the final letter of a word:
ма/ме is used after words ending in a vowel or р, л, й, у
ба/бе " " " " " " " ж, з, м, н, ң
па/пе " " " " " " " voiceless consonants and б, в, г, д
Б, в, г, д are never found in native Kazakh words, only in loans. When they are found at the end of a word they are devoiced, and thus any suffixes added to them will also be a voiceless variant.
*The vowel in a suffix is harmonized according to the final vowel of the root. To recap:
Front vowels: ә е і ө ү
Back vowels: а ы о ұ
у/и can be either front or back, depending on the other vowels in a given word.
Back vowels harmonize with back vowels, front with front, so in this case ма/ба/па would go with а ы о ұ (и у) and ме/бе/пе with ә е і ө ү (и у).

Exercise 1.

Transform the following affirmative sentences into interrogative ones using the question particle. Translate into English:

Example: Мынау өзен "This is a river" - Мынау өзен бе? Is this a river?

Мынау бала емес. Бұл адам еңбекші. Анау - алма. Қалам жоқ. Көп бар. Ағаш көп. Әсел оқушы. Осы әйел - ұстаз. Оқулық жоқ. Бұл кітап оқулық емес. Анау сүлгі. Дәрігер көп. Анау сүт емес. Сәкен оқушы. Айгүл ұстаз.

New words:

Names of professions and other activities

хатшы - secretary
еңбекші - worker
оқытушы - teacher
дәрігер - doctor
суретші - artist
кәсіпкер - business owner
сатушы - seller
оқушы - (school) student
студент - (university) student
ұстаз - teacher, tutor, educator

Objects

сүлгі - towel
қағаз - paper
қалам - pen
пышақ - knife
кітап - book
дәптер - notebook
оқулық - textbook
қант - sugar
сүт - milk
шай - tea
су (*back vowel) - water

People

адам, кісі - person, man
еркек - man (male)
әйел - woman
жігіт - young man
қыз - girl
бала - child

Demonstrative pronouns

мынау - this
анау - that
бұл - this
осы - this/that
сол - that

Dialogues
-Мынау не? What is this?
-Мынау дәптер. This is a notebook.

-Мынау дәптер ме? Is this a notebook?
-Мынау дәптер емес. Мынау кітап. This isn't a notebook. This is a book.

-Қасен кәсіпкер ме? Is Qasen a business owner?
-Иә, ол кәсіпкер. Yes, he is a business owner.

-Сол әйел кім? Who is that woman?
-Ол хатшы. She is a writer

-Бұл кісі сатушы ма? Is this man a seller?
-Иә, ол сатушы. Yes, he is a seller.

-Мынау сүт пе? Is this milk?
-Иә, сүт. Yes, it's milk.

-Нұрлан сүлгі керек пе? Nurlan, do you need a towel? (*"is a towel needed")
-Керек. Yes.
-Мә, ал! Here, take it.
-Рақмет Thank you.

-Қалам жоқ па? Is there no pen?
-Жоқ. No.

Exercise 2
Create new sentences of the same type as those found in the dialogues using the new words.

Exercise 3
Translate into Kazakh:
What's this? Is a pen needed? Is Tanya (Таня) a secretary? This is sugar. This isn't sugar. Is this water? There is no milk. Who is that girl?

Сабақ аяқталды - The lesson is finished.
Келесі кездескенше - Goodbye ("until next meeting")

Lesson 2
Екінші сабақ

Today's lesson deals with adjectives.

Adjectives in Kazakh always precede the word they modify. This is a very important rule that is never broken. If you switch them around then the adjective becomes the predicate. For example жаңа дәптер new notebook > дәптер жаңа - the notebook is new. Let's look at some more examples:

Су таза
subject - predicate
The water is clean

Жаңа кітап жоқ
adjective - subject - predicate
There is no new book ("New book isn't")

Мынау қызыл қалам
subject - adjective - predicate
This is a red pen

The adjective as a modifier or a predicate can be replaced with the word қандай? how/what kind of? in which case the sentence is interrogative.

Қалам қандай? What kind of pen is it? Қалам жаңа The pen is new.
Қандай қалам бар? What kind of pen is there? Жаңа қалам бар. There is a new pen.

The word қандай can also be used as an intensifier like English "how" or "what a ...":
қандай жақсы how good!
қандай өкініш what an annoyance!

Negative sentences require the word емес
Сызық түзу емес The line isn't straight
Мынау түзу емес сызық This isn't a straight line ("this is an un-straight line")

Adjectives:
ақ white
қара black
сары yellow
қызыл red
көк blue
жасыл green

ұзын long
қысқа short
үлкен big
кішкене small
кең wide
биік tall
тар narrow
сұлу beautiful
жақсы good
жас young

ақылды smart
мейрімді kind

Adjectives can be preceded by intensifying words. The most common of these are given below:
өте very өте биік very tall
ең the most/-est ең қысқы the shortest
тым very, too тым жас very young
аса super- extremely аса жоғары extremely tall

New words
үй house
дала steppe; кең дала boundless steppe
жол road
ағаш tree

Personal pronouns

The pronouns in the singular in Kazakh are the following:

мен - I
сен - you
сіз - you (polite singular)
ол - he/she/it

Note that in Kazakh there is no gender. Therefore ол can mean either he, she, or it depending on context. Secondly - the pronoun сіз is the polite singular, it is not used for more than one person.

Conjugation of the predicate

The predicate in Kazakh changes for person, even if it's not expressed by verbs, but by nouns
Let's look at some examples:

positive - negative

1st person мен оқушымын i am a student - мен оқушы емеспін i am not a student
2nd person сен оқушысың you are a student - сен оқушы емессің you are not a student
2nd (polite) сіз оқушысыз you (polite) are a student - сіз оқушы емессіз you are not a student
3rd person ол оқушы he (she) is a student - ол оқушы емес he is not a student

The endings -сың/сің and -сыз/сіз are added to all nouns without any changes (apart from the vowel), but the 1st person ending has several variants:
-мын/мін - for words ending in vowels and voiced consonants, apart from б, в, г, д, ж, з.
-бын/бін for words ending in ж, з (*and м, н, ң)
-пын/пін for words ending in voiceless consonants and б, в, г, д.

The personal endings are not stressed. Thus the stress remains on the syllable preceding it:
оқушЫ - оқушЫмын
дәрігЕр - дәрігЕрсің
To form the negative the word емес is used.

Adjectives also receive the personal endings: ақылдымын I am smart; ақылдысың you are smart, etc.
The predicate can also take adjectives. In this case the personal endings are added to the last word.
Look at the table

Positive form
Бұл адам өте тәжірибелі дәрігер ме?
adjective subject adjective predicate question-particle
This man very experienced doctor ?

Negative form
Сен өте тәжірибелі дәрігер емессің
(adjective) subject adjective predicate negative-particle (question particle)
You very experienced doctor aren't

Сен өте тәжірибелі дәрігер емессің You aren't a very experienced doctor.

In colloquial language the word екен is often placed after the predicate. It can be loosely translated into English as "it turns out" (*Russian "оказывается"). It has many meanings, one of which is to express the surprise of the speaker. The word екен can take personal endings.
Ол өте мейрімді екен He (, it turns out,) is very kind.
Жол тар екен The road (turned out to be) very narrow.

Read the sentences and look at the translation:

Сіз оқушы емессіз бе? Aren't you a student?
Мен солай қуаныштымын I'm so glad
Ол өте жақсы суретші екен He's a very good artist
Сен студент емессің You aren't a student
Сіз кімсіз? Who are you?

Lesson 3
Үшінші сабақ

Today we begin with some practical advice. In our lessons we don't give the meanings of all the words separately. Likewise there is no vocabulary for all the words used in the lessons. All unknown words need to be looked up in the dictionary (*I will try to give translations for these wherever they occur). The best dictionary on the web is www.sozdik.kz. Ideally you will memorize all the new words in the lessons. In any case it's best to write them down in a notebook and review what you have learned previously. Alas, foreign words tend to be forgotten very easily. And now on to today's lesson.

Today's lesson - The plural.

The plural is formed with the following suffixes
-лар/лер~-дар/дер~-тар/тер. The rules for which one to use are the following:
-лар/лер for words ending in vowels and р, й, у
-дар/дер for words ending in ж, з, л, м, н, ң
-тар/тер for words ending in voiceless consonants and б, в, г, д
The rules are similar to the ones for the interrogative particle, only -дар/дер comes after л, not, -лар/лер. The reason for this is because the consonant cluster лл is not permitted in Kazakh and the second л gets changed to д. көллер>көлдер

Question words also have plural forms: кімдер? who? and нелер? what?
Demonstrative adjectives do not agree in number with the nouns they modify:
бұл көше this street
бұл көшелер these streets
үлкен ғалым great scholar
үлкен ғалымдар great scholars

The plural is not required after words like көп, аз
көп адам many people
аз адам few people

Exercise 1
Give the plural of the following words:
өзен, қала, үй, кітап, қыз, бөлме, ай, көл, көпір, ақын, ұстаз, есік, геолог, терезе, Аманжолов

Memorize the plural personal endings used with the predicate:

біз оқушымыз we are students
сендер оқушысыңдар you (informal plural) are students
сіздер оқушысыздар you (polite) are students
олар оқушы they are students

The first person uses the ending -мыз/міз~-быз/біз~-пыз/піз. The rules are the same as for the first person singular (and the question particle)
-мыз/міз for words ending in a vowel and voiced consonants other than б, в, г, д, ж, з.
-быз/біз for words ending in ж, з (*and м, н, ң)
-пыз/піз for words ending in voiceless consonants and б, в, г, д.

Note that in the 3rd person the predicate does not agree with the subject in number. This is characteristic for verbal predicates as well. Just remember - in the 3rd person there is no ending for number (*or person)

олар жазушы they are writers ("they writer")
ол жазушы he is a writer

Learn the plural pronouns.
біз we
сендер you (informal plural)
сіздер you (formal plural)
олар they

Greetings addressed to several people:

( * you'll notice there is no question 16) in Exercise 2 and two question 8s in Exercise 3. this is the original authors' mistake, not mine)

Dialogue
-Мына магнитофон жаңа ма? Is this tape recorder new?

(*note: when the demonstrative pronouns мынау/анау this/that are used as adjectives they lose the final -у)

-Бұл теледидарлар ескі ме? Are those tvs old?
-Иә. Бұл теледидарлар көне. Yes, these tvs are old ("used" подержанные)

Strange. The newest versions of the common web fonts (Arial, Times, Courier) cover Kazakh so I don't know what the problem would be...

I'll think about it. As it is I don't even have time to study *Kazakh* seriously. It would make more sense to learn Japanese first, anyhow.

Great job, zhig! Maybe I should learn Kazakh to help me with Turkish, instead of Saami.
Learning Georgian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Papiamentu from scratch. Trying to brush up my Norwegian up to an advanced level.

Just learn the damned Turkish if you want to learn Turkish and learn Kazakh if you want to learn Kazakh. What's the problem with people dabbling in related languages and confusing themselves even more? :D
