I think my mom took a semester of Uzbek in college, but she soon realized it wasn't very practical and reverted to Arabic in addition to her existing knowledge of French, Spanish, and Turkish. That's all of the experience "I" have with Uzbek.

Uzbek seems easier than Turkish, but Turkic languages intimidate me. I need to grab an Uzbek grammar and overcome my fear :p

Uzbek is supposed to be easier because it lacks vowel harmony.

I wouldn't go as far to say it's simpler than the other Turkic languages though. From what I remember from Routledge's introduction to the Turkic languages, Uzbek has a very rich set of modals - a feature which seems to be shared with other neighbouring Kypchak languages like Kazakh.

There's also a huge vocabulary overlap with Tajiki. I can tell you that almost every time I learn a new Tajik word which doesn't exist in Iranian Persian it turns out to be a loanword from Uzbek.

Indeed. I've been interested in Kazakh, Turkmen, Uighur, and Uzbek (and Tajiki) forever. I know I'm not going to be fluent in any of these, hell I might not even learn any of them. Though I'd like to think I'll get around to at least one of them eventually.

I don't think one is actually easier than the other, but knowing one definitely helps learning the other. The logic of Turkic languages is very different from what speakers of Indoeuropean languages are used to, and that is definitely intimidating at first. It's a matter of working hard and getting used to it.

I don't think the lack of vowel harmony makes it easier. I mean, vowel harmony is a bit tricky at first, but once you've gotten used to it it comes out of your mouth without even realizing it. I very rarely commit any vowel harmony-related mistake while speaking/writing Turkish.

I second what kalemiye says. When you just start dealing with the vowel harmony it seems hard since for nearly every word in your sentence you have to stop and think which vowel should be used in the affix. But you get used to it surprisingly fast, for me it was a matter of 2 weeks.

It's much much harder to get used to the syntax.

There're more than twenty tales, narratives, short stories and novels available in both the latin and the cyrillic alphabet.

That link doesn't work--the correct URL is

All I see there is text in the Cyrillic alphabet, which my screenreading program (for tech nerds: Jaws) can't handle. I'd like to know if there's a particular page on Azam's site where his works in the Latin script are listed together.

The files can be found in the various pages of the site (novellalar, hikoyalar, qissalar, romanlar...).

Some good resources for Uzbek available here. The first chapter of Uzbek: An Elementary Textbook can be read for free online.

Also, I started a thread on Chagatay, the 'ancestor' to Uzbek, in the extinct/classical languages forum.
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

Hey everyone!

I have been doing a bunch of research on Uzbek (writing a paper on its causatives, again) and I think I want to add it what I am learning (polish and japanese). I'm currently using the DLI textbook. It's pretty easy to find in pdf form. Even though I have more knowledge than an absolute beginner, I'm starting from the beginning. If anyone wants to join message me and I'll give you my skype.

It's more than a long ago, but even the correction has got mistakes which even a beginner wouldn't do.

I didn't know where to post this song, so I post it here. It's in Uzbek. If you have a link to the translated lyrics, I would appreciate, because I don't understand what the song is about.
