anybody interested in this language, or learning it?
(for those of you learning turkish - the languages have about 80-85% shared vocabulary and the grammar differs only very slightly.)

All Turkish people can understand azeri. At least, %80 of them. It's got different words from Turkish.
For example,

kapı (Turkish) = door
kapı (Azeri) = Castle

futbolcu means footballer in Turkish but in Azeri, "kamanda" means footballer.

kıç means bum in Turkish but in Azeri, kıç means "leg".

indeed, there are lots of false friends, some very funny ones too
most people have heard the joke about "uçaq düşdü"
and how about "azərbaycan yarraqlı qüvvətləri"?:D

"kamanda"nın futbolcu değil de "oyuncu" anlamına geldiğini sanıyorum..
kız voleybol takımına "bakireler kamantarası" diyorlardı da azeri televizyonunda..

Hmm...maybe I will learn this after Pashto, Turkish ahd Kurdish...

I should have learned Persian and Azeri instead or Istanbuli Turkish - this is a lot closer to Persian, it seems. (Which would make sense geographically)...I'm interested in whatever other reasources you put here.

I agree! zhiguli is impressive; and every single post of his is a source of relevant and never dummy information.

I receive a couple of satellite TV channels from Azerbaidjan here in Italy: one of the two in particular (Lider TV) has always interesting movies and stuff. It would be nice to learn some azeri, however I beleive it is out of my reach, like all Turkish languages...

Not Azerce but Azerice and we all use Azerice instead of Azerbaycan dili.

i'm really not sure which one is the most "official" but i get roughly equal results for azərbaycanca and "azərbaycan dili" on google. azerice afaik is the turkish name, searching for "azəricə" only gave me 108 hits.

Yeah. Azeri is sometimes reffered to as "Iranian Turkish" in Lebanon.

Don't know for sure. There seems to be a preference for longer version. The same with the nationality name - Az@rbaycanlI is more common than Az@ri.

Perhaps it has something to do with Iranians insisting that only the extinct NW Iranian language once spoken around Tabriz can be called Azeri and that the "Turks" are "usurping" the name.

Lastly, I was told in Baku that referring to the language as "azerskij" (in russian) was considered rude. The proper word was "azerbaijanskij" I was told.

Azeri is more common than Azerbaycanlı imho.

In Turkish - sure. But in Azerbaijani?

My impression was that the longer name was more common in Baku. I am not 100% sure as I had much more contact with Lezgis than with ethnic Azerbaijanis while there.

Azerbaijanis living in Iran quite often refer to themselves (or are referred to) simply as 'tuerk' or 'tork' (in Persian)

Both of them. There are two main dialects - the one that is by default spoken in Azerbaijan and the other that is spoken in Iran.

Still somewhat confused though.

If I want to order a translation into azərbaycan dili I wouldn't know which of the dialects to use. Or is the difference only verbal, so the written language is the same for the two variants?
