Languages of the Indo-Gangetic Plain

Much of the Indian subcontinent is occupied by the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It extends from Balochistan past Bangladesh and even southern Bhutan and Nepal to the northeastern Indian state of Tripura. The official languages of these areas alone include English, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Sanskrit(!), Maithili, Bengali, Nepali, Assamese, Dogri and Kokborok.

Out of all of these languages, only Kokborok is a Sino-Tibetan language, and English is, of course, Germanic. All the other languages in this list are Indo-Aryan. Kokborok is also the only language in thsi list that has no official status at the national level in India.

Important languages spoken in the part of the Indo-Gangetic Plain located in Pakistan include Punjabi, Balochi, Siraiki, Sindhi, and Pashto. None of these languages have official status in Pakistan though Punjabi and Sindhi do at the national level in India. The languages of the Indo-Gangetic Plain include not only Indo-Aryan, Iranian, and Sino-Tibetan languages but also Dravidian and Munda languages and perhaps even Tai-Kadai languages.
