Songs in Malayalam

Postby vijayjohn » 2014-01-06, 8:29

OK, for me (personally), this is basically going to end up being a dumping-ground for the umpteen 20th-century Malayalam songs I love and have heard my mom listening to (and often singing). :P As a Malayalee, I feel culturally obliged to make the first songs I post here be from Chemmeen, since that's like the most famous Malayalam movie ever. It's late, so I won't listen to them just yet, but here they are (in order of appearance!) anyway

UPDATE: I have now added translations for these songs. I'm going to see whether I can translate the other ones, too. :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7JIfXxw6OU
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?723 (in any of these "lyrics" links, click "view MSI in English" to get the lyrics in Roman script)

Attempted translation:

Those of you who have to cross over to the other shore of the sea,
Those of you who have to go for unseen gold,
Those of you who have to cross over to the other shore of the sea,
Those of you who have to go for unseen gold,
What will you bring when you come back? What will you bring
When you come back with your hands full?
Will you give me the ruby stones
Of the fisherman's daughters
On the waves of the Ocean of Milk on the fourteenth night?

When those of you who have to set out in your
Sandalwood boats go, go, and come back,
Will you bring me the good, sweet fish
In the big pond on the full moon day?
Will you give me the pearls of shyness
That the snake dancers in the starry sea
In nomads' stories wear?

When those of you who have to set out in your
Flowery boats go, go, and come back,
Will you bring me the pigeon
On the illusory island in the big pond of my mind?
On the midnight platform, on the fifth platter(???),
Will you give me the divine virgins' necklaces of marriage?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4FHG5baLOM
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?724

Myna of my mind, come pierce your sweetness into me!
Who, who are you looking for in your lovely flower garden?

Oh, the evening fragrance in the land of moonlight has blossomed!
Have you forgotten your childhood friend?

The waves in the sea and the desire in the heart
Will not abate, darling; they will not abate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lswDCuLwh8
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?725

New netters who are from Punnapra,
There's a
chaakara, chaakara, chaakara on Purakkad beach,

The chaakara, chaakara, chaakara
That we've been craving and craving and craving,
With the sky clearing across the sea
After the rains of May!

Boatmen going for the good, unseen fish,
Boatmen waving their golden nets in the sky,
Even the fish on the waves onshore are not enough,

Thaanaanam thaanam thillana, even the fish aren't enough.
Give us the good fish that have come to our shore from the Ocean of Milk!
Give us shrimp from the good waters; give us shrimp!

Chakara: There's a festival on the seashore.
Chakara: There's a competition on the waves.
Hey, Panchami, spin yarn from the lotus spool
And repair the good nets, oh, white bird!
It's Onam, it's good old Onam, it's good old Onam!

Today sure is an auspicous day for our shore!
Today, after all, is the day of Arcturus, an auspicious day!
Skylark singing nomadic songs,
Do you see all the dancing across the Seven Seas?
Juggle, Sea Goddess, juggle the boats in the sky!
Juggle, Sea Goddess, juggle them this way and that!

Chakara: The nets are full of mackerel.
Chakara: They're flapping around in my lap, man!
Come back later, people waiting around for your share!
Come back later! I don't have any more fish to lend.
Elayya!
Elayya, ela elayya, ela elayya...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUsrFGdh2HU
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?726

Girl with the eyes, girl with the eyes of green chromide,
Precious virgin daughter of a lotus,
Oh, girl with the eyes, girl with the eyes of green chromide,

Aren't you a pearl that the sea gave us? Aren't you a pearl that the cold weather harvested?

Hoy hoy!
Yelelam! For the fisherman in his boat, aren't you the lady bird he fondles,
O girl with the eyes, girl with the eyes of green chromide?

Kite flying in the sky,
Will the fish today be sardines or shrimp?
After all, the holiday at the Arthunkal church is here.
Sea Goddess, give us a good catch!

Long ago, a pearl diver went diving for pearls.
He drowned in the western wind.
The fishwife meditated.
The Sea Goddess brought him back.
When the fisherman goes in his boat,
You're the one waiting for him, you know?

Hoy hoy!
That's how it is; that's how it is, or else your husband wouldn't be on this shore,
Girl with the eyes, girl with the eyes of green chromide!

What I see in the sky is not pearls,
Nor is it pearls that sprouted in the earth.
Come, pearl! Come, darling pearl
On the first wave in the first sea!

Long ago, a pearl diver went diving for pearls.
He drowned in the western wind.
The fishwife went astray.
The Sea Goddess took him away.
When the fisherman goes in his boat,
You have to wait for him on shore,

Hoy hoy,
Girl with the eyes, girl with the eyes of green chromide!

Anyway, here's that song I wanted to listen to:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZJXd-MzACs
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?3848

A jewel of a lady among Pulayar (outcastes), a lady in a grove of flowering jasmine trees,
A pet lady parrot with the eyes of an elk
Went with her friends to a bathing ghat with water lilies
To bathe in the lovely moonlight when Hydra was in the sky.

The heart of the Malavedan man, who was standing on the
Riverbank where the oleander was blooming, beat.
Like a vine swaying in the gentle breeze,
He dove into the wave of her song.

Coming out after taking a leisurely bath,
She came out throbbing to the beat of the song she was singing.
Pretty gold dust from the line of turmeric
That served as a caste-mark on her forehead got mixed into the stream.

Re: Songs in Malayalam

This is another Malayalam song I've been wanting to post for quite a while: "Premabhikshuki" from Punarjanmam (1972). The title of the song means 'woman begging for love'. Specifically, it seems to be a song about forbidden love. I remember hearing this song when I was little. (The lyrics sound so poetic! I wonder whether I can figure out how exactly to translate them ):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpfsEokMVIw

Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?2774

Woman begging, woman begging, woman begging for love,
In which lifetime, on what evening, and
Where did we meet? Where
Did we meet for the first time?

Along the roads where generations came, laughing
And crying, and that they stepped on and kneaded,
Our own footprints that we set
Remained covered with dust. How long
Did they remain covered with dust?
If only we were able to forget! If only
We kept our distance from each other!
Woman begging! Woman begging!

Exhausted from walking, fate came and pinched off
The flowers of our minds that blossomed
In the footprints of the lamp at the doorstep
Of the temple on the road. Even now,
Fate came and pinched them off.
If only we were able to forget! If only
We kept our distance from each other!
Woman begging! Woman begging!

This song is "Shararaanthal Thiri Thaanu" from Kaayalum Kayarum (1979). I think I'll listen to this song later (tonight), too. :P

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxUvMswGmZ4#t=0

Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?5170

In her cloudy hut, winding down her chandelier,
The dusky lady lay down to sleep.

All that remains awake in the chill of January
Is a desire to slumber in the warmth of her full bosom.
Won't you come...?
Won't you come wear the rattling bracelets the waves' hands gave you?

An urge to hide in her untied bun of cloudy hair on the lap
Where a flower has blossomed is in full bloom at night.
Won't you listen...?
Won't you listen to the song of the waves beating on the riverbank's chest?

Before a video of this song disappears from YouTube yet again, I'm going to post it here. It's "Thinthakathom" from Ottayal Pattalam (1991). I'd say it's a relatively obscure song, but I remember listening to it on a cassette when I was little:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72vbA0rJ_Bg

Lyrics (in Malayalam script):

ആടാം, തെയ്യങ്ങൾ ആടാം;

Lyrics (in Roman script):
thinthakaththOm chilampaNinjnj(u) vaaLeTuthth(u)
kOmarangngaL thuLLavE... (thinthakaththOm...)

kaaval daivangngaLE,
pOkaan iTam tharuu,
vaanampaaTi pOle duure duure! (thinthakaththOm...)

kaattil peythuviiNa chengkanal,
thaazhe viiNaTinjnja maNkuTil... (kaattil...)
thiippiTichcha naaTTilinn(u) viiNavaayana.
cheththimaala chErriyiTTa sandhyayil
aaTaam, theyyangngaL aaTaam;
pOruu, kummaaTTikkaavil... (aaTaam...)
ithaa raudrakaaLamELasangham.

nErin chOra viiNa maNNile
pOril poymukhangngaLaaTavE (nErin...)
changkaTanjnja nenjchilinn(u) praaNavEdana,
kaNN(u)niir(u) viiNuranjnja sandhyayil.
snEham, poyppOya thiiram,
thETum kaaruNyadeepam. (snEham...)
ithaa Saanthasaumyagaanamanthram.
(thinthakaththOm...kaaval...)

Attempted translation:

While the entranced temple dancers shake their anklets
Thinthakathom, take their swords, and jump around,

Gods watching over the temple,
Give me a place to go
Far away like the skylark!

The red embers that rained down in the wind,
The mud hut that fell down and settled
Are playing veenas today in a land on fire.
On an evening when they've scattered golden pendas around,
We'll put on, we'll put on some theyyam performances.
Come along, to the grove where Kali is worshipped!
Here it is: A gathering for a festival of mad bulls.

While fake faces dance in a war
On a land where the blood of time has spilled,
On an evening when I've cried myself a river,
The pain of life is in the chest where my heart is stuck.
The lamp of mercy seeks
Love, a long gone shore.
Here it is: the mantra of the calm song of peace.

Re: Songs in Malayalam

Postby vijayjohn » 2014-01-17, 7:09

Posting some more songs before they disappear mysteriously as well! These are the songs from Ponmudi (1982). I discovered the first song fairly late (or at least I don't remember ever hearing it until just a few years ago at most), but I definitely remember hearing all the others since childhood, even though the only movie I've ever seen (out of the ones I've posted about in this thread so far) is Chemmeen.

Anyway, the first song is "Doore Neerrunnorormayaayi":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2RzmYn2g-c
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6273

You are crying out far away like a burning memory.
Here I am, searching, searching for the stars of your path
With a pained heart.

A cuckoo is looking for feathers to cover the wing a knife singed off,
To fade into the sky at a beautiful moment, to reach an eternally graceful shore.
Don't delay in coming close! Approach me
Calmly, lover!

You are crying out far away like a burning memory.

The heart of a flower writhing in pain looked for the suns of a new dawn.
My mind is dancing like a peacock, my lord, so that you may feel caressed.
Who are your eyes looking for now? Approach me
Calmly, lover!

You are crying out far away like a burning memory...

And here are the other three that I'm more familiar with, in the order they appear in on the audiocassette I have right here at home:

"Jaladevathe Unaraan Neramaayi (Anuraagalolayaayi Nee Vaa)":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOTSr-cOTYs
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6274

Deity of the water, it is time for you to awaken.
Flow with the light!

Come coveting love, you, with your blossoming desire!
Fly in like a bird in the nest of my heart!
Come coveting love, you, with your blossoming desire!

I am flowing in with a certain fragrance,
With a desire for our first encounter,
To awaken you, to fade in you,
For my shyness to sleep with you.
Come blooming, you,
Like a flower bud in the pool of a melody!

Come coveting love, you, with your blossoming desire!

Like some sort of Cupid, I am coming in search of you
With a rare, youthful kind of thirst.
Prepare yourself and come
As a beautiful woman, like Cupid's wife,
To embrace me, to put me to sleep,
To slumber under the warmth of my wing!

Come coveting love, you, with your blossoming desire!

"Vidaruvaan Vithumbumee" (I love the tune for this song in particular! It sounds kind of complex to me):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfZLfaL6lN8
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6275

You colored these flower petals that long to bloom.
The dark, beautiful flower came to know the joy of a touch.

Melodious swan, come here with the gentle heat of the sun!
Here I am, the darling you crave, standing here waiting for you.
I will wrap this wetness(?) of transient lust with nature.
I will wrap it with nature.

As the first melody awakes on the flute of my heart,
I search silently, search silently for
A source of thrilling joy
On the land where my wet dreams spread their shade.

"Kilukilukkam Kaattil":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_JQMfSdPKs
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6276

In the forest of rattles, in the forest of small bells,
A bird-like lady, a lady is blossoming(?).
Who, who, who is it that came? Who is it, my favorite bird?
In the forest of rattles, in the forest of small bells...

I extended the cool joy of a dream in order to
Place a garland of seven leaves around his neck.
The girl stood waiting, and her embarrassment bloomed.
She stood there with her hair loosened.
Who, who, who is it that came? Who is it, my favorite bird?
In the forest of rattles...

Is it the mother who brought that gentle girl
Like the coolness of the blue mountain and
Like the honey of this flower grove?
Who, who, who is it that came? Who is it, my favorite bird?

One Onam, when I was still in elementary school, my mom and some of the other local Malayalee ladies danced to the song "Mailaanchi" from Kidilolkkidilam (1995). It's a Muslim-style song, presumably from northern Kerala. This song made me fall in love with Malayalee Muslim songs ever since, but I didn't find it again until like last week or something. Now that I've managed to find the lyrics, too, I actually don't really like the message it seems to be sending (i.e. spend a ton of money on your wedding!), but I still like the style of this song. Apologies for the somewhat bad quality of the video (and the fact that part of the tune is skipped):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrgoF8j-KdE

Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?193700

Henna, henna...
Let the grace of the henna song ring!
You better get the wedding and dining hall ready!
This playing around and laughter isn't enough.
This color (
rang) and grace isn't enough.
For the peacock dance of love (
muhabbat),
You need a party; you need rhythm.

You need a potful of gold.
You need a thousand saris and veils.
You gotta show off when your hubby gets here from Dubai.
You need a palace of rubies.
The newlywed girl and boy
Need a creaky bed.
It should be full of love (
muhabbat).
It should end at home(?).

The husband came in Muharram like Shah Jahan.
Mumtaz, daughter of Brother Hassan, stood like a queen.
By Allah, what are you getting shy for?
Once you close the door to the bridal chamber, isn't it
Y'all showing off? Isn't it showing off then?

Re: Songs in Malayalam

In the Nair community in Kerala, it's fairly common for people to marry (and before that, even to fall in love with) their cousins. Specifically, men often marry their cross-cousins - that is, either their maternal uncle's daughter, or their paternal aunt's daughter. These songs are from a movie I watched sometime in 2010 (I think) called Murappennu (1965); the title of the movie is also the word for a man's cross-cousin. The movie is kind of overrated in my opinion; it seems to be generally thought of as a good movie, but I find it a bit over-dramatized, and unfortunately, it was much harder than I realized while watching it to understand what exactly was going on.

Anyway, here are (almost all of) the songs from that movie, in the order that they appear, beginning with the title song, "Kannaaram pothipothi," which is possibly a kind of folk song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0Co3Ve8lDE
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?601

These translations are probably all really full of mistakes, but...

Cover your eyes,
Cross the shore, (cover...),
And come running
Seeing the invisible children;
Come running seeing them!
Come touch the hands or feet (2)
Of the lady standing on the opposite shore!
Cover your eyes
And cross the shore! (Cover...).

Oh, time's a-wasting, time's a-wasting;
We planted the pineapple tree!
Oh, the first fowl, the waterfowl
Is skipping along!
Oh, they made me build the tank that
Hadn't been built as soon as I got there!
They made me build the hut that
Hadn't been built as soon as I got there!
Oh, time's a-wasting, time's a-wasting;
We planted the pineapple tree!

The next one is "Kadavathu thoni," in which two female cross-cousins playfully tease each other for being in love (each is in love with the other's brother):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fbnjRXxzg0
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?604

As the boat approached the shore (today), the shadow
Of a rainbow appeared on the girl's cheek
(Whose?).
Upon hearing footsteps in the garden (today), someone
Was frolicking in golden dreams
(Me?).

When my mom went to open the door, a parrot
Peeped from behind a pillar.
When you arrived with a lamp on the floor of holy basil today,
A man looked back through the window. (2)
As the boat approached the shore, the shadow
Of a rainbow appeared on the girl's cheek.

Someone sure was jingling her hollow bracelets
While doling out leftover rice.
Oh, but while you were folding the silk bed,
The sound of your footsteps was laughing at you. (2)
As the boat approached the shore, the shadow
Of a rainbow appeared on the girl's cheek.

After that is what seems to be not one folk song but rather a medley of festive folk songs called "Onnaanaam Marumalaykku." (Apparently, these songs are for the Thiruvathira festival, and the date of this festival varies from year to year. This year, I believe it's on March 10). I love the way this song ends with polyphony :D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0NgqG-bHp8
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?607

There were once a thousand maidens on a certain mountain. (2)
The maidens and God danced together and picked flowers, danced together and picked flowers.
While picking flowers standing up, the maidens' bodies became exhausted.
Their bodies felt exhausted, their hands felt exhausted, and they fell on their backs.
God stood there watching them, held their hands, and supported their bodies. (2)

Is there anyone who saw the flower-arrowed god once, beetle on a certain flower? (2)
Yeah, girl, in the flower garden, I saw him, (2)
With a loincloth in a circle around him, carrying his
mundu on his shoulder (2),
With Chrysanthus flowers, Chrysanthus flowers, and a
pichi jasmine on the fringes.
Is there anyone who saw the flower-arrowed god once, beetle on a certain flower? (2)

There go dragonflies dancing,
The first dragonfly and the offspring she bore.
The dragonflies are made of neither iron nor copper nor bronze.
The dragonflies form a chain, a golden chain. (2)
There go dragonflies dancing,
The second dragonfly and the offspring she bore.
The dragonflies are made of neither iron nor copper nor bronze.
Why don't the dragonflies tremble? (20)

Go one by one; a darling baby has been born! (3)
The ladies planted one blackboard tree, of course,
On a foot of land atop a certain hill. (The ladies...)
The blackboard tree sprouted leaves, sprouted flowers, and sprouted fruit.
Goddess Parvathi, give the blackboard tree (
paala) milk (paal)!
(The blackboard tree...)

The second-to-last song is a song where a murappennu is playfully complaining to her cousin/boyfriend about her friends teasing her (for being in love with him):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqO-Vl7BQuw
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?603

The friends I grew up with made fun of,
Made fun of, made fun of me
As my left eye twitched every now and then yesterday.
The friends I grew up with made fun of,
Made fun of, made fun of me.

They made up a story,
Made up a story that the beautiful swan of love
Made its home in a rock in the lagoon of my mind.
The friends I grew up with made fun of,
Made fun of, made fun of me.

Standing in front of the neighbors' house that was hosting a wedding,
They pointed at me and made fun of me (Standing...).
When my hands toppled over the metal plate of sandalwood paste,
They burst out laughing,
They burst out laughing in muffled giggles.
The friends I grew up with made fun of,
Made fun of, made fun of me.

While I go pray in the grove at twilight
And they show up somewhere along the way,
One friend teases me by whispering in my ear
That (goddess) Parvathi worships (her husband) Shiva.
The friends I grew up with made fun of,
Made fun of, made fun of me.

And finally, the last song is a sad song. It also happens to be the only song from this movie that I had ever heard before watching it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUupOm7D6X4
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?602

Is the river crying or laughing (3)
As its branches separate, shedding tears?

As hearts held together induce sweat,
Are the ties between them strengthening or loosening? (2)
Is the river crying or laughing? (2)

O waves, I will beat my head against the riverbanks
With a heart wailing out of grief!
Neither the shore knows nor heaven knows
Your never-ending pains. (2)
Is the river crying or laughing? (2)

How easy it is to tell someone to forget!
It is easier to not be born on the Earth.
Even if I lay down to slumber in the bosom of forgetfulness,
Memories run in and awaken me.

Re: Songs in Malayalam

Postby vijayjohn » 2014-02-25, 4:48

"Akkare Ikkare Ninnaal" is a song from the movie Ithaa Oru Theeram (1979). I'd say the lyrics of this song are relatively simple for a love song from a Malayalam movie, although that may also be because they're somewhat repetitive and the "hoy lamaali ay lesamaali" part appears to be just nonsense words - or at least, it's certainly not Malayalam.

So here's the song, anyway:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIOzogqn4N0
Lyrics: http://malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?5102

How will desires end, your desires end, if
You remain on opposite sides of the river?
Either the male bird has to go to that side,
Or the female bird has to come to this one.

Hoy lamaali ay lesamaali.

Did you notice the jasmine trees buds blossoming?
Did you notice how the inside is all full of honey,
Girl with tender deer eyes, girl with a flower's honeyed tongue?

Hoy lamaali ay lesamaali.

Did you notice the moonlight shining in the blue sky?
Did you notice the chill falling even into our hearts,
Girl with tender deer eyes, girl with a flower's honeyed tongue?

Hoy lamaali ay lesamaali.

Re: Songs in Malayalam

Postby vijayjohn » 2014-03-14, 4:39

OK, tonight, it looks like I've ended up listening to three fairly randomly chosen songs. The first one is the oldest Malayalam movie song I know, even older than all of the songs my parents know. It's "Povuka Naam" from the movie Pon Kathir (1953), which is basically a political debate in song between a communist (female voice, with the chorus representing her cadres) and a capitalist (male voice). Interestingly, both the male and female characters are portrayed by actresses who are in fact sisters. Unfortunately, it's no longer available on YouTube, so here's a link to a place where you can see the video with the lyrics:

http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?1728

After that, I listened to "Ellaarum Chollanu," a folk song from Neelakkuyil, a classic movie that was released the very next year. That movie was also the first that my parents had seen. The video also has subtitles in English (which aren't necessarily all that good - subtitles rarely are):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4cwSNfGEyI
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?1750

And finally, a much newer song, i.e. "Kannaadi Kayyil" from Paavam Paavam Rajakumaran (1990):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDd8CN0a2tI
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?5485

Lady crow bird, did you see a wedding in your glass hands?
Is there someone in it throwing a bouquet of coriander
Flowers? Is there a beauteous lord?

When he comes looking for me like the sun
Extending its hands of blossoming palm leaves,
I see, unable to speak and unable to sing, the
Chill in his eyes through half of the bird cage,
And my eyes fill up with love.

What about when he sees me on the branch
Of a golden banyan extending a light blue wick?
When one lifetime isn't enough,
When another lifetime isn't enough,
One instant joins into a quarter of a second by itself,
And my eyes fill up with love.

OK, so this time, I just listened to the oldest Malayalam movie song I know. It involved a lot of work, because I felt like writing out the lyrics, and the song is pretty long! The song is called "Povuka Naam"; it's from the movie Ponkathir (1953), which is old enough for my parents to have not even known about it until I found this song. :P This is the song:

My attempt at a translation:

Chorus:
Let us go, let us go, let us go in opposition!
We will not fear upon seeing the battle flag! We will not be hurt by bullets!
Brave men who turned in your sickles to remove cries of hunger,
Let us go, let us go, let us go in opposition!

Male:
What is this? Where all are you going in such a panic?
Why this readiness for war? Who are you?
Tell me, who are you?

Female:
I am the comrade who is going to muster up support
For the poor who are victimized by hunger even after working.

C: Let us go, let us go, let us go in opposition!

F:
(In order) to gain our rights from those
Who live in those high storeys far away,

C: Let us go, let us go, let us go in opposition!

M:
I see!
What do you intend to gain by pursuing this vendetta?
Tell me the nature of your rights!

F:
The worker has been kept at a distance, and the capitalist has been treated mercifully.
(We want) to uproot these unfaithful laws.

(M: [...] sister?)
F:
With all due respect, we also believe
Today only in this terrible road
That sows the seeds of revolution!

M:
While you may reap
The seeds you sow,
Is this revolution a means for peace?

F:
Yet how many people attained victory through this path!
What have they gotten out of it but a tragic peace?

M:
[...] with weapons how strong
My homeland is without violence--?
You see for yourself the message
Of peace of Krishna, Buddha,
Jesus, Muhammad, and Gandhi!

Vishnu: Nonviolence is the highest moral virtue.
Jesus: Love thy neighbor as thyself!
Buddha: Love is one whole world.
Buddha (is a) refuge, the Sangha a refuge, Dharma a refuge.

Another Woman: Non-violence is truth, love,
And the salvation of an oppressed India.
Call those people Vaishnav who
Feel the pain of others,
Call those people Vaishnav!

W:
The reason why we have sweated our blood
Is because they should be aware that your wealth will increase today.
A brotherhood should be born
By those who do work becoming comrades.
A worker should always end up with support.

M:
Then what do you want for that? Any worker
Should do their work considering their work alone to be their victory.
They should think of their boss as their friend,
Do their duty, and get rid of the protest mindset.
They should do their duty and get rid of the protest mindset.

W: True, true...
C:
I have realized the truth.
I have come, awakened,
And eradicated my fear.

M: Famine and suffering will go away from the world,
C: And we will forget the very word "low-caste."
M: Love will blossom in everyone's hearts.
C: The time will be ripe for unity; let us attain our goal!

We are children who dawn in a land.
We are flowers who grow on one stem.
We will only see a new world
Wearing unity and greatness (in its) golden hair!
We will only see a new world!

Re: Songs in Malayalam

Postby vijayjohn » 2014-05-24, 1:51

Today, I was listening to four movie songs, all from the '70s, while I was waiting for UniLang to be back up again. :P The first one I listened to was "Swarggam Thaanirangi Vannatho" from Vanadevatha (1976). I pretty much know all the lyrics to this song. I even started trying to play this one on the piano by ear once. I didn't get very far, though. But I'd like to try anyway:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRq-Cdrf4oc
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?3809

Is it that heaven fell down, out (of the sky),
Or is it that a dream stood spreading out its peacock feathers?
Is it that however much is beautiful in
God's creation just faded together here?

Flowers jump in excitement as beetles approach.
Lips bear the flashback of a sweet smile.
Without my mind realizing it or my body realizing it,
I am flowing into a wave.

Clouds that mountains took and put on their laps,
Desires that the mind approached and embraced,
O light breeze, o breeze of a jeweled flower,
You come flowing through the cool waves!

The second was "Akkare Akkare Akkare Allo" from Kadathanattu Maakkam (1978). I definitely know all the lyrics to this song, and in fact, it just may be my favorite song in Malayalam (it certainly used to be!):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqTqnzr09l8
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?4621

Oh, Ayilyamkavu is on the other side,
The other side, the other side of the river,
A sweet, honeyed mango tree for those who come
Shriveled in the tragically oppressive sun!

The illusory goddess of Ayilyamkavu is a strong illusion of a goddess,
The goddess Durga, who hides her servants that take a third or a fourth of a step.

Don't you abandon me as I come through the river of tears to dock!
Original, primeval strength, aren't you the medicinal herb for disease and anxiety?

The third was "Vadakkini Thalathile" from the (I think relatively famous) movie Thacholi Marumakan Chandu (1974), which is based on a folk legend from northern Kerala set in the 16th century (so, around the time Vasco da Gama was trying - unsuccessfully at the time - to establish his control there! Sorry for the bad audio quality of this particular video btw):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM05dxHeix8
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?3380

When the parrot who grew up in the veranda in the northern indoor courtyard
Called and informed me that Ramanan would come today,
My mind and eyebrow throbbed and danced.

I wore my
mundu with the border dyed yellow
And put on my wedding necklace the size of a grain of paddy.
I longed again and again for the man I love
To just come here and stay with me.

Even the sluice of the sacred brass lamp
Shook, standing unsteadily, like me.
When someone pushed the window bars to close the outer gate,
I burst again into brokenhearted tears.

And finally, "Krishna Paksha Kili Chilachu" from Nakhangal (1973):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXRwmDiuYYA
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?3064

The bird by Krishna's side squawked,
"Come bathe, female bird! Come bathe!
If you come and bathe, I'll put a saffron
Crocus in your hair with my beak.

By the side of the pond by the Shiva temple,
There's a grove covered in dew,
And inside the grove covered in dew,
There's a magical jasmine flower.
I'll pick the flower (ooh!).
I'll slumber in the flower (oh wow!).
Girl, will you get scared, will you get scared
When a flowered arrow strikes you? (Nope!)

On the other side of the valley of the great silver mountain,
There's a house thatched with glass panes,
And near the house thatched with glass panes,
There's a beautiful, colorful chariot.
I'll steer the chariot (ooh!).
We'll sleep in the chariot (oh wow!).
Girl, will you get embarrassed, will you get
Embarrassed if I ask you something?" (Nope!)

I've posted this song on Unilang before, but now I have a request - would anyone like to kindly translate the lyrics? I don't know any Malayalam but I can translate the Arabic parts:

makka - Mecca
madeena - Medina (the two holiest cities in Islam)
labbaik Allahuma labbaik - hard to translate but roughly means 'O God, I have heard your call and obey'
rasool - messenger (implies the Prophet Muhammad)
hajar al-aswad [sic; should be al-hajar al-aswad] - the Black Stone
Allah Mawla... - God, [our] Master
(and I wonder if jannathin is jannat + some case ending or something - if so, it means heaven)
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

Oh, really? That's great! I'm sorry, I never noticed that before. I think my dad and I are both pretty interested in seeing this movie, but at this point, I'm starting to wonder how to even see movies anymore. We used to use Netflix for that, but...that's not terribly useful anymore, so...

Anyway.
but now I have a request - would anyone like to kindly translate the lyrics?

Sure! I'd like to try, at least. It has a lot of flowery Sanskrit words in it (poetry of any sort in Malayalam usually does), so there are a bunch of words I'll have to look up, but that's okay. I like trying to translate movie songs in Malayalam anyway. (By the way, if you don't mind me saying so, I'd like to recommend malayalasangeetham.info for Malayalam song lyrics. It has the lyrics for probably every Malayalam movie song I can think of, and you can see them in both Malayalam script and Roman script :)).
(and I wonder if jannathin is jannat + some case ending or something - if so, it means heaven)

Yes, it is. That's the genitive case ending. :) So it means 'of heaven'. Other Arabic words in the song are: ka abaa, which is just "Ka'aba"; samsam, which I think is the Zamzam Well; and khibilayam (misspelled in that link you gave as shibilayam; word segmentation is a difficult problem in Malayalam, so it's written there as shibilayamorunaal even though it could just as well be s/khibilayam oru naal) from qibla, i.e. the direction towards Mecca.

So here's my attempt at a translation:

Mecca, Mecca...
What is the point of this lifetime, short as it is,
Except to reach Mecca (and) Medina?
Upon entering your pure homes again, may you, the supreme ones,
Succeed in attaining one more happy lifetime.
May you make it your fate.
May you succeed; may you make it your fate.

Labbaik Allahuma labbaik (2)

In a land wrapped in the holy words
Of the prophet with affection in his eyes,
Oh, in a land wrapped in the holy words
Of the prophet with affection in his eyes,
At a wall of the Ka'aba covered long ago by the fingerprint of Abraham,
May you succeed in bending down and kissing the Black Stone made by the owner of heaven.
May you make it your fate.
May you succeed; may you make it your fate.
Mecca...
Is a place that (I) turn to consciously and subconsciously, Allah,
Allah, Allah, Allah.
What is the point of this lifetime, short as it is,
Except to reach Mecca and Medina?

Every day, carrying the Kaf Mountain(???) on my shoulder along with various burdens of sorrow,
I am leaping over the fiery deserts of old age.
Will I be able to apply a tiny bit of the Zamzam's cool water to a parched, dried lip?
May I succeed; may I make it my fate. (2)
God, Master! (2)

I will walk, limping in pain
For a distance that knows no end
Along a path that grew as soon as I glanced at it.
I will see the pointer towards Mecca one day and salute it. (2)
May I succeed; may I make it my fate. (2)

What is the point of this lifetime, short as it is,
Except to reach Mecca and Medina?
Upon entering your pure homes again, may you, the supreme ones,
In attaining one more happy lifetime...
Labbaik Allahuma labbaik (5)

------------------------------------

And finally, here are a few songs, along with links for the lyrics! :) The first one is a Christian religious song. It's basically just a slightly modified version of the Lord's Prayer set to music. Apparently, songs such as this one were used to convince Christians that it was okay to watch movies. Malayalees in general used to believe that going to the theater and watching movies was scandalous, perhaps because of the romantic scenes in many of these movies, but this particular song is meant to appeal to Christian viewers in particular. It's called "Aakaashangalil Irikkum" (that is, 'who art in heaven'), and it's from the movie Naadan Pennu (1967):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HulG2xEyB4
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?1005

Our graceful Father, who
Remainest in the skies,
Hallowed be yon name,
Yon kingdom come!

Thy dreams blossom on Earth as in heaven!
Bring us bread
At those times when we come hungry!
Amen, amen, amen!

Excuse thou our debts!
Guide us!
Keep delivering
Us from falling in a trial by fire!
Amen, amen, amen!

The other one I'm posting here, "Aniyam Maniyam" from Pani Theeraatha Veedu (1973), is just a sort of cute song telling a story that resembles the kind of folktales that people tell kids:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkJ3Oc2x3YI
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?2887

Long ago, in the big pond of
Aniyam Maniyam, there was a swan.
She would mimic Urvashi
From dawn until dusk.

On the day she went to the grove of blooming
Flowers to dance, she saw a peacock;
Saw his full peacock feathers;
Saw his noble, precious loincloths;
And saw a flower vine on the crown of his head.
Then she went and borrowed
That peacock's colorful wings.

On the day she went to the temple on
Agnimudi Hill, she saw a deer,
Saw its crescent horns,
Saw the corners of its eyes,
And saw the dreams the sun had put in them.
Then she went and borrowed
That deer's blue eyes.

Those who came along that road to see the
Swan's dance saw the mischief she was up to,
Underneath the rainbow's umbrella of flowers,
With the peacock's feathers,
With the deer's eyes.
They watched that dance and laughed,
And the swan became embarrassed.

Many thanks Vijay bhai!! (What would be the Malayalam equivalent, if one exists, for addressing a male of roughly the same age?)

Oh, really? That's great! I'm sorry, I never noticed that before. I think my dad and I are both pretty interested in seeing this movie, but at this point, I'm starting to wonder how to even see movies anymore. We used to use Netflix for that, but...that's not terribly useful anymore, so...

No need to apologize, I probably posted it before you even joined Unilang! I was able to see this film years ago by downloading it off a torrent site. You may be able to find it online. There's a torrent on Pirate Bay right now but it only has a couple of seeders. If you aren't able to get it, send me a PM and I'll see if I still have the file; if I do, I can try to upload it somewhere for you. It was a beautiful film. (The full film is on Youtube, though the quality isn't great which is a shame for such a visually stunning movie. I found an HD version of the full thing on Youtube too...but dubbed into Turkish! )

Nice, I knew I was hearing 'zamzam' in there somewhere! Also very interesting that Malayalam turns the 'q' in qibla into 'kʰ'. It's like how Hyderabadi Urdu renders 'q' as 'x', then with the Hindi pronunciation of 'x' as 'kʰ' applied to that.

Every day, carrying the Kaf Mountain(???) on my shoulder along with various burdens of sorrow

The Qaaf mountain is a mythical mountain in the Sufi tradition, cf. Cafcuh.

Also, I loved "Aniyam Maniyam" :) If I ever find the time to learn a language that I don't use for research, Malayalam is pretty high on the list, even though I know it's going to be a real pain to learn such a diglossic language and one with such few resources..
Please correct my mistakes in any language.

Oh my God, I meant to click "quote," but I keep making the mistake of forgetting that I can edit posts on this forum and click "edit" instead!! :x
Many thanks Vijay bhai!!

No problem, Eskandar bhai! :)
(What would be the Malayalam equivalent, if one exists, for addressing a male of roughly the same age?)

There isn't one for people of the same age or younger as far as I know. If a guy is older than you (and neither much older than you nor higher than you in social status), you could address them as 'older brother', but every family has its own set of kinship terms, and there isn't really a generic term for 'brother'. (There's [səˈhoːd̪ɛɾɛ̃n], but that's a pretty formal term). For example, in my family, the word for 'older brother' would be [əˈtʃaːtʃɛ̃n], but I've also encountered [ɪˈtʃaːtʃɛ̃n], [ˈtʃeːʈɛ̃n] (which is a Prakrit loanword; I've also seen the Sanskrit loanword [ˈdʒjeːʃʈʰɛ̃n]), and [ə̃ɳˈɳɛ̃n].

Oh, that's cool. :) I'll try to look for it then.

Oh wow, I didn't realize that about Hyderabadi Urdu! :D Yeah, I've also seen that being done with the word qalb. I think there's a song called "Ente khalbile," which would mean something like 'in my heart'. There's another Muslim folk song (or folk-style movie song) called "Kasthoori thailamittu mudiminukki" where there's a line that goes [jɛ̃n̪ˈn̪ʊ̃m pəd̪ɪ̃naːrɯ ʋəjəsˈsãːɳɯ ˈkʰəlbɪl] '(you) are forever sixteen at heart'.

The Qaaf mountain is a mythical mountain in the Sufi tradition, cf. Cafcuh.

Ohh, OK. :) It's kind of interesting how they have [kʰ] for qibla and qalb, but not for Qaaf!

That's great to hear, and I'm glad you liked that song! :D Yeah, I am well aware of how few resources there are. That's why I just make my own lessons for it right here on the South Asian forum. 8-)

EDIT: Here's another song from Pani Theeratha Veedu: "Vaa Mummy Vaa Mummy Vaa." :) This one's even cuter lol:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLtmf5sQAzA
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?2888

Come, mummy, come, mummy, come,
Come, mummy, and gimme, mummy, gimme, gimme a kiss!

Mummy, did you hide in the ghost's mountain?
Did you hide in a hut of flower vines?
Show me on a good stick, on a stick for spinning yarn(??)!
Found you! Hey, I found you! Ha ha ha!
Found you! Found you, Mummy!
You drank your debt!*

Mummy, did you hide in the shade of the Casuarina tree?
Did you hide on the riverbank of a mirror?
Get me
A
thithai(??) dragonfly, a dragonfly for decoration!
Show me the myna on the lotus in the forest below!
Found you...!
Mummy, you drank your debt!

Mummy, did you hide in the room where the barn is?
Did you hide in the sweet shack?
Tell me, lying crow, squinty-eyed crow!
Show me the temple doves in the invisible nest!
Found you! Hey, I found you! Ha ha ha!
Found you! Found you, Mummy!
You drank your debt!

*This is a literal translation of what the song says at this point. No one in my family knows what it means.

No problem, Meera! :)

So this time, I'm going to post like all the songs from two different movies, one of which I don't think I've ever actually seen and the other of which I must've seen like at least thirty times. The first one is Devaragam (1996) and stars the very famous actors Arvind Swamy (of Bombay fame) and Sridevi. This is the one I don't think I've ever seen, but I heard the songs a lot as a kid anyway. :P

The first song is "Shishirakaala," which AFAICT is entirely about sex (it even has the word for 'sex' in the lyrics, which, to my knowledge at least, is pretty unusual for Indian movie songs)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4hDIs-_TiM
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?11830

Is it the fragrance of the coupled clouds' sex during the cold season,
Or is it just God's grace?
Is it the charming feeling of my soul's thirst diving into the cold,
Or is it just God's grace?
My body feels a cold blue,
My heartbeats feel a cold blue.
The clouds are foggy and beds spread out,
And fascinating things have blossomed in the cedar tree.

The first thrill and an opening flower,
Sweetness transferring enjoyment,
That daydream and those tears of joy
Will blossom in our hearts.
The chorus of a delightful song, the existent queen of my heart,
These seconds will give rise to petals of wealth.

With a very gentle tune, the golden pen of time
Writes a love poem,
And in the intoxication of this night, even the groups of stars
Will melt in these hearts.
River of a gentle song, traveling woman with a vibrating rhythm--
These seconds will embrace each other.

Then there's "Sasikala Charthiya":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0CWCfgaMSI
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?11829
(I had no idea what these lyrics were even supposed to mean tbh, so this translation is actually copied from this video)

Adorned with the encircling lights cast by the crescent moon,
The night is like a flame, a decorating ornament.
The art generates the internal festivities.
New knowledge unfolds in the evening,
And different secrets unfold,
O, the awakening goddess [Devi Kundalini]!

As the goddess form is drawn inside,
In the young lips, mantras abide.
In the night's intoxicating perfume,
The goddess has been adorned.
Carrying a smile of joy resembling the starry valley,
Flows the gentle breeze.
As in the bonded rhythm of the five fold song
Is the rhythm of your leg ornaments, the kingly music.
Oh goddess, I hear you pray!

In the stone pavilion, there is the fragrance of perfumed sandal paste.
In the lighted clay lamps, there is shimmering of gold.
The beauteous form, goddess's gift,
To be able to experience at this moment,
The vision's grace dances;
Goddess Lakshmi's emanation dances.
A beauteous music, an enlivening beat,
It is your multicolored leg ornaments, the kingly music.
Oh goddess, they ring on!

"Thazhampoo":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc8IeFixs4o
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?11832

Screwpine flower with ruined hair,
Folding and wearing nine yards of sari,
Wearing a little bit of silver, wearing it on your nose,
Daughter, get ready! Daughter-in-law, get ready!

To keep your eyes from burning,
Spread some floral ink on your cheek!
Adorn yourself with a line of turmeric indicating your caste;
Wear fragrant flowers in your hair!

Like the light inside the camphor lamp,
You will walk around [the lamp], and a fresh smell must flow down.
Like the golden
thamburu's sruthi,
Virtues should spread within you.

As the graceful lamp of the village,
When you step into the threshold with your right foot,
Holy chants to the Goddess must blossom
On your lips, long-living, happily married woman!

"Yaa-Yaa-Yaa-Yaa-Yaadavaa":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZMgwjtBfL0
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?9374

Ya-Ya-Ya-Ya-Yadava, I know.
Ya-Ya-Ya-Ya, I know your Yadava facial expressions,
The gaze of your peacock feather eyes, your mischief,
And the haughtiness in your beautiful flute song.
Krishna, Krishna,
I know the stories of your
swayamvara and honey-filled,
Tender heart!

Lord Krishna, your romantic dances
Rained lightning bolts from the sky
And bloomed as drops of rain in my eyes!
You took Govardhan in your hand
Long time ago, as if it was a flower, danced, and played with it.
As for the poor maidens, they slumbered in your illusion.
You stole butter without the
gopis noticing.
You stuffed the whole world into your mouth in one go.
I know the stories of your playful swinging
In the sweet dusk, the excitement of desire,
Your illusion,
swayamvara, and
Honey-filled tender heart.

O Radhika, a hut of vines in the forest
Saw this confluence of rivers with longing!
It blossomed tall as a jasmine flower.
These words are drops of honey.
The blue moon's disc will spread them as nectar
Caskets of sapphire melodies are full of.
I'll play the flute of the Northwesterner of the Yadava dynasty.
I'll dance in your veins like a wave in the Yamuna River.
I know the heavenly stories of your
swayamvara
And honey-filled, tender heart
As you and I sing the tune
Of a fragrant melody.

"Karivari Vandukal":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP-kLO7ukPw
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?11831

A black line of beetles, short rows of
Beautiful things kiss your chilly forehead,
Your eyebrows furrowed like Cupid's bows,
And your long eyes, like blue lotuses.

Your lips are like tender leaves of a mango tree. The
Beauty of a petal blossoms a red lotus on your cheeks.
Your shady dimples wear a chill,
Rivers of your sweet smile.

Is your neck, hands, or water-lily rings
At loggerheads with a conch shell?
The waterpot of youth is in your full bosom,
The valleys of a cluster of gentle hair.

Is your graceful bellybutton the leaves
Of a pipal tree, a slim belly, a whirling pond,
The quiver of the joys of life,
Or the blue of a bellybutton-sized forest?

Moreover, do you have mere beauty or a precious
thamburu?
Do you have a golden screwpine blossom or mere calves?
Goddess Lakshmi, you are the heavenly beauty
Great Indra's blue rays sprout.
You are the heavenly beauty. You are the heavenly beauty.

And then the songs from the other movie, which is Pookkalam Varavayi (1991). In order of appearance in the movie, they are "Muthani Munthiri":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drqsr5xKico
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?12324

Let's go far away on this
Magic(?) bus to the city of dreams
In search of a field of coral
On a precious farm of pearly grapevines!
We'll fly away on the path we travel during the day
On wings of clay formed by the blue rain
To the cool shade of the snow-capped mountains.

Staggering under the river,
We'll see, we'll see
A floor covered in incense,
A small boat made of kids' candy,
Walls made of hard candy,
And a ceiling made of a piece of halwa with
The upper storey covered with colorful balloons
And a chimney decorated with glowworms.
We're swaying this way and that way.
Where is this expedition headed?

A little
jalebi flower blossoms
On the tip of the pumpkin flower
Because of a swing on a lollipop
In a toyhouse of solid honey.
There's a swan in a pond of
payasam
Splashed with mulberry juice.
Let's go, let's go
Flow in the glass boat!

"Kunu Kunungi Puzhayum":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wFc9T-UejQ
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?12325

Long ago, on a hill that was no longer covetous
With a swaggering river and swallowing rain,
There was a beautiful magician.
She held a pot of good in one hand, and
She held a pot of evil in the other hand.
She waved her wings and left the hillside.

When she came to the edge of a village below the hill,
As she uttered a spell and emptied out a pot,
People came to bargain for large
Amounts of wealth in front of her.
She changed and laid out
Pride, jealousy, joys, and good things.

Many bought platters of greatness and great,
Desirable birds and took them away with them.
The fan spreading the honey of love
Was the wealth that no one bought.
The beautiful magician crumbled in their tiny minds,
And her magic disappeared.

"Etho Varmukilin" (Male):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42Xd4wqGuuU
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?10522 (also includes lyrics for female part)

You came as the pearl
In a beautiful cloud's dream.
Pearl, you came into me in the
Moonlight as some kind of memories
To give my life nectar
Again, darling.

As you lounge around and
Heaven arises on Earth,
Like the virtue of my life,
Even a faded star shines
Like hands full of spring.

All I hear on the bamboo
Flute your gentle lip joins
Is a tender, divine melody.
Like the spell of my life, it fades
Like the desires that adorn my word.

"Ambaari Poonguda Choodi":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oga8KoSh8Ik
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?10521

Oh, come to the shore of the Yamuna River, precious Baby Krishna,
In your elephant saddle and canopy, with your good pair of venerable feet!
Come dance, dance, Your Holiness, to drink a shower of baby's milk!

There is butter for you to make mischief with, people from Karumadi,
Songs, and games. The gopis are there.
There are golden bangles on your little, wavy arms.
There is embroidery on the ends of your costume of flowers.
Extreme beauty, can you brush me with the peacock
Feathers on your body as you pass me by?

Radha of the Yadava clan is there, who, like the moonlight, showers
You with a gate decorated with a grove, the tune of a clay veena.
There's a birdhouse in the tuft of hair on your white head.
There's rain to play in in the leaf-plate of a gentle breeze. :?:
Graceful beauty, can you sing
Me my melody on your flute?

Tonight, I think I'll post two Malayalam movie songs from the '80s that both seem to have really nice lyrics and great tunes. :D One is called "Arayannakkili onnen maanasaththil." It's a love song from Maanyamahaajanangale (1985). I think maybe I'll try my hand at translating the lyrics soon:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKvlx5ZAs6Q
Lyrics: http://malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6700

Swan bird, just stand there and spread
Feathers of beauty in my mind!
All I see in my darling
Is red powder that puts shyness (on you),
A flowerful tree that makes (your) desire blossom.

The river and the bank have necklaces from the sun;
You have the complete necklaces of my heart.
The lovely sky and lovely breeze
Will rain a body of water in a while.
I long to put a golden necklace
Around your breasts with my hands.

Sandalwood paste will ooze out from the blossoming platform,
And they will set up umbrellas on the shaded altar.
Your inner self and my inner self
Will utter magic chants in a while.
I am eager to put a mark
On your forehead with my lips.

The other is "Chembaka pushpa" from Yavanika (1982), which apparently is a really good movie, too (apparently some kind of complex whodunit):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T070yK73nqo
Lyrics: http://malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6212

One evening when the Champak flower is fragrant,
One evening when the moonlight appears...
A desirable bower of flowers,
A desirable bower of flowers made
A yak's moving tail blossom. :?:

A romantic dream slept,
Slept, never to arise.
I am sitting here, here, idly
Singing my memories to this day.
I am telling various stories.

The noise of gentle foot anklets slept.
Beams of moonlight slumbered.
I remember the story of you
Bidding me farewell one such, such day.
The memories are shedding tears.
