Nice song, eskandar bhai! :) I had no idea it existed until you posted it.

Also, since today is Onam (or Thiruvonam to be more precise), here's an Onam song called "Kannanthali Muttam" from Njanonnu Parayatte (1982):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHJ9G_kTyJ0
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6414 followed by http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6413

For the goddess of the Earth on Thiruvonam in late August,
Common lantanas, large men's earrings,
Little tree plants, earrings,

Thumba flowers, a sweet smile,
Jasmine flowers to decorate hair...

A courtyard of bicolor Persian violets, a
thumba in the courtyard,
What gathered the
thumbas in the tuft of hair was a precious neem tree,
A precious neem tree.

Costumes danced on a branch of the neem tree.
The costumes sang.
A flute on some lips is gathering ears,
Gathering honeyed ears.
The night of the full moon is shining
With measuring rods for rain(?), peacock feather headdresses, timid women,
Timid women,
And trembling wings of gold.

ezhuthaan arrinjnj(uk)uuTaa. enikk(u) chilathuNT(u) parranjnj(u)tharaan. onn(u) varuu, enikk(u) kaaNaan! Svaasam muTTi marikkunnathin(u) munp(u)...MaadhavETTante...!
I don't know how to write (this). I have some things to tell you. Come here so I can see you! Before I suffocate to death...your...!

A star in the sky, a flower below,
A flower below,
Golden moonlight,
Golden moonlight
Is decorating the flower and blossom with a chill.
Did the golden moonlight's cheeks puff up?
Are its eyes puffing up?
As for the flower, the tips of its eyes call out for a long time.
The calls are echoing.
The calls are echoing.

And another song praising Kerala called "Maamalakalkkappurathu" from Ninamaninja Kalpadukal (1963):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amfgZle4DNU
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?188

On the other side of the great mountains, there's a
Land called Malayalam, there's a little land
Called Malayalam, wearing emerald-colored silk.
There's a land where forests and gardens
Clap and play in the dreamy moonlight.

In that region where lakes and rivers smile,
Embroidered with paddy fields decorated by the sun,
There's a house like a bird cage, there's
A little house like a bird cage on the lotus shore,
In the shade of sprouting coconut trees.

At the threshold of the house, there's a woman
Lighting a lamp and waiting for my return.
There's a woman with charcoal blue eyes and a
Mole on her cheek the color of a pineapple flower.

Girl waiting and waiting for me and wiping her tears,
Alas, I have no wings to fly over and come near you!
Alas, the illusory airplane of sweet dreams
Is incapable of taking a human away!
Alas, the illusory airplane of sweet dreams
Is incapable of taking a human away!

Finally, my niece's birthday is in less than a month, so I guess I might as well post a couple of impossibly cute movie songs :P
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cEGuVAxASk
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?8092

Didn't you go ahead and make a hut out of vines in order to hide?
Daughter bird, didn't you come here to keep playing and tell stories?

Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
I'll sing "cuckoo, cuckoo," too,
And come with you, cuckoo!
Did you hide your insolence and fly away?
I won't be with you.
Come here, rufous treepie!
I'll set up a swing for you.
I'll drink the dripping sap of hanging flowers and come.

My flower friends, jasmine, little tree plant,
How come you play deaf and don't listen
When I tell you stories?
Touch-me-not, do you have any idea how much I love you?
Let me touch and caress your cheek!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGnExPztHRA
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?5483

Sway slowly back and forth;
Sway gently and sleep at an angle!
Go to sleep, little baby eyes;
Sleep gently, little baby heart!

Kingini, sweet child,
The hairs of your young eyelashes brush.
Even if they give me a new one over the hills(?),
Even if the gods come and call us,
We'll raise you without letting go
And lull you to sleep in this golden crib.

As your legs grow, as your little arms grow,
Oh, a mommy is awake, oh, a mommy
Is awake inside with glasses on her tail
To give you gold, to decorate you with pearls,
To give you gold, to decorate you with new pearls!

Not knowing the way, not knowing the meaning of pain,
A star has opened its eyes somewhere on Earth,
Has opened its eyes somewhere on Earth behind an invisible screen.
The night didn't notice, and a flower with good gems didn't notice, either.

Re: Songs in Malayalam

Postby vijayjohn » 2016-01-04, 7:30

This time, I'll start out by posting two Malayalam songs that are not movie songs but rather folk songs that I just happened to stumble across. One is "Mandaarakkaavilu" from the album Kunjippennu, a song about celebrating Pooram, which is a festival celebrated every year in certain parts of Kerala:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w42jsOAHPXY
ചന്ദനപ്പൊട്ടിന്റെ പെണ്ണേ,
chandanappoTTinte peNNE
Girl with a dot of sandalwood paste on her forehead,
വട്ടം കുറഞ്ഞാലും
vaTTam kurranjnjaalum
Even if the circle ends up smaller,
ചന്തത്തിനൊട്ടും കുറവില്ല, പെണ്ണേ,
chanthaththinoTTum kurravilla, peNNE,
Girl, it makes you no less beautiful,
ചന്ദനപ്പൂമയിലേ!
chandanappuumayilE!
Sandalwood peacock!

മന്ദാരക്കാവില്
mandaarakkaavil(u)
വേലപൂരം കാണാൻ,
vElapuuram kaaNaan,
എന്തടാ കുഞ്ഞാഞ്ഞേ,
enthaDaa kunjnjaanjnjE,
ന/ഞമ്മക്കും പോകേണ്ടേ?
na/njammakkum pOkENDE?
Big brother, how about it?
Shouldn't we also go to the
Flowering grove to see the
Pooram of temple dances?

We'll celebrate Pooram
In the flower grove
When the sky clears up
After the January harvest.

The other is "Enthaadalaadaa 'Love'shadam?" from Nattamma, about a young lady and an Ayurvedic doctor falling in love with each other. The title is a pun on the phrase എന്തടലാടാ ഔഷധം? enthaDalaaDaa aushadham? 'hey, do you have any medicine?', but replacing au with lau, which is how Malayalees (and a lot of other South Asians) stereotypically pronounce 'love'. A lot of it is really hard to translate:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYhqD_Xh4xM
ഇത്തലവേദന ചെന്നീകുത്തിന് എന്തടലാടാ 'ലൗ'ഷധം?

I have medicine, Parukutty!

And now back to old movie songs, lol. But both of the next two songs are from dubbed movies, and I've posted the original versions in the threads for songs in each respective language. The first one is "Chinnum Ven Thaarathin Aanandavela" from Jeevithasamaram (1971), which is a translation of the Hindi song "Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga" from Jeevan Mrithyu:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz6UUu-Hmf8
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?13140

The happy occasion of the white stars scattering
Is the time when the flower-arrowed one (Cupid) dances everywhere.
The dream of the beautiful wish-fulfilling tree that I wish for is a lifetime journey.

We, we just made a small illusory
House in the romantic game of love,
In the romantic game of love.
In the world of dreams, my love,
We stayed to play and dance.
The comic occasion when a sweet desire is spread
Is the time when the flower-arrowed one dances everywhere.

Owner of lifelong happiness, you bring me my melody!
Cool rain of love, oh, bring me the sky!
The time of sight that your eyes seek
Is the time when the flower-arrowed one dances everywhere.

With the fragrance of scattering flowers
This forest of desire is filling up.
My mind is seeing the spring of a dream of many kinds of pleasure.
The romantic game of pleasant times inside us
Is the time when the flower-arrowed one dances everywhere.

And the second is "Neelavaanacholayil" from Premabhishekam (1982), a dubbed version of the Tamil song "Neela Vaana Odayil" from Vaazhvey Maayam, a movie that was a remake of a Telugu movie also called Premabhishekam from the same year! Here's the Malayalam version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6Uxa9CDAFM
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?10817

Moonlight swimming in the shade of the blue sky,
I saw the poems I penned in your eyes,
My goddess who came without coming!

Oh, the
Meghaduta sung by Kalidasa
Is the melodious song that is the male servant to my goddess!
A female bird spreads drops of honey on her lips.
I am alone if you are not there.
Why only this silence?

Why don't you and I put (wedding) garlands around each other tomorrow?
Let's stand together and bless the heavens and Earth!
Is it anger, eagerness, or thirst that is in your eyes?
O Sridevi, my life,
Wherever you are, I am there, too!

And here are some more songs because why the hell not. :P The first two of these are songs I'm pretty sure my mom was listening to recently; the other two are from a movie called Dasaratham (1989), and I'm posting them because my niece was here for Christmas and they're so childish. First, here's "Doore Oru Thaaram" from Meenathil Thalikettu (1998):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXfQTxTnn-E
Lyrics in Malayalam: https://m3db.com/lyric/67695 (note that ഏകാന്തമാം is misspelled)
Romanized lyrics + partial lyrics in Malayalam script: https://en.msidb.org/s.php?9598

There's a star far away and a shore down below.
There's a sweet, invisible swan in the wind as a messenger.
Whether sunlight comes through the glass or it rains at night,
My precious, I'll come calling at your door
In a secret place tonight,
With the tenderness of love this time.

I'm listening slowly to the song you're
Humming in an imaginary tent, pigeon!
Let's join at the breast and go fly out around!
Let's steal the teardrops of a
Heart in pain with our eyebrows!
Let's sing a lullaby, la la la,
And dance happily together!

Baby cuckoo of my desire, I can see all
My dreams, any colors, my lifetime achievements
With the tenderness of my melody without trying to!
If you shine as a moon of flowers on a
Branch of this rainbow that drowns in the dew,
I'll turn into a swing
Tonight under your flute.

And "Sharonin paneer poo choodi varoo" from Saaphalyam, an unreleased movie from 1997:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLRzbxhP78c
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?15350

You shy lover of the autumn at the end of my life,
Come wearing rosewater flowers from Sharon!
You spray cool nectar throughout your life!
You come with your beautiful body like a pot of honey
That fresh youth froths like new wine!

Here are a pair of deer in the shade of a tree in the forest.
Come sing a song in response like a cuckoo sings
While a cool stick of dew blooms with moonlit flowers! :?:

You're not the wind that runs around kissing each and every flower.
You're a sweet dragonfly casting a spell in the ear of the flower you seek.
I gently embraced the bosom of this body blossoming like
The trees trembling as the seasons caress them. Slumber at
Your leisure, you determined lady! Here I am spreading blossoming
Flowers, cool weather, after we howled boisterously on the bed in the
Bridal chamber and after we just came together with honeyed words!

Leaning on this breast today, I'm seeing some dream
On the hill of fresh green grass where the musk deer grazes.
Dreams sprouted their flowers, and you spread
Their petals. My heart beating in the comfort
The flower's finger caressed is calling a precious
Cuckoo. You come here and awaken, my love, with
A sweet, pleasant melody on the string of
Your beloved inner
veena!

And finally "Chinchilam Thenmozhi" and "Mandaaracheppundo" from Dasaratham (sorry for the poor audio quality for the first one, but this is exactly how I remember hearing it! :P And the second one begins about one minute into the video):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFlH_dlHvGE
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6987

As a thousand days flower in my life,
Here, all around the Earth, are
Gentle :?: ditties of honeyed words!
There is pleasant beauty everywhere.
There's a wave of happiness inside me.
On this solitary stage today,
Light-colored birds spread some kind of beauty!
Here, all around the Earth, are
Gentle ditties of honeyed words!

As for the waves that tiny hands weave nearby,
Today, with the rhythm of my heart,
With a thrill, they bring good times.
For one dawn, they are happiness.
They wear the colors filling
The Earth in large amounts.
Light-colored birds spread some kind of beauty!
Here, all around the Earth, are
Gentle ditties of honeyed words!

The flowering feet begging slowly for alms
Are a feast for the eyes.
As they chatter with
Their sweet rain of blandishments,
The smell of the flowers blooming all
Along the way has become sweet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL4YIRU24I0
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6986

Graceful lady, do you have a bouquet of crown flowers or a ruby stone in your hands?
Do you have gold, honey, and sweet flag? Do you have the feathers of a skylark?
Silence sings as waves of delight rise inside you.

The endearment of a lullaby in the caressing wind,
The purity of a harmful song that a bedtime song brings, :?:
While the blossoming vallies provide their rhythms,
While my cold hand makes my heart tender,
As flower buds are decorated with petals, as the sun is decorated with rays,
Silence sings as waves of delight rise inside you.

As the lonely journey of the burning sun ends,
When night from then adorns itself with wings of darkness,
As the path is covered in its spreading blue hue,
Who can sleep in the growing silence?
As a leaf falls for a second, while driving the chariot of birth,
Silence sings as waves of delight rise inside you.

"Swapnangale Veenurangoo" from Thakilukottampuram (1981) is a song I've heard my dad sing many times, but I'd never seen a movie clip of this song or heard the version as sung in the movie (and didn't know what movie it was from or anything). It's one of those sad Malayalam movie songs with beautiful lyrics:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AVKWO-2mAo
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?5935

Fall and sleep, dreams! Sleep now, desires!
Without awakening sweet emotions and
Without making the intoxicating flowers of great love bloom,
Sleep now! Fall and sleep!

Aren't silent emotions meaningless
In this anthill that is life?
Aren't the days when play and smiles
Bloom a journey into grief?
Mind, don't cry! Don't you
Shout, looking for dreams!

Every connection in the pitch-black nest
Of transient lust is an eternal truth.
Aren't thirst and desire selfish?
Aren't happy endings and relationships a myth?
Man, don't cry! Don't you
Shout, looking for shores!

"Manjakiliyude" from Kanmadam (1998) is a song I've heard my mom play on one of those CDs of Malayalam songs she'd pop into the car's CD drive every time we were driving somewhere relatively far away, such as when we went to visit relatives near New Orleans:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TjcyEFobzk
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?9625

Oh, there's the song the yellow bird's singing!
There's the ditty the pole of rain is scattering!
There are the eyes whose five wicks are bright!
There are the anklets that ring as they smile!
There are bangles for mischief on your right hand!

O dawn and dusk who bathes smearing a line of turmeric on its forehead,
Will a little cloud or a breeze put the holy wedding necklace around your neck?
Rainbow body changing into a yellow costume, is the shadow
Or the moon the night that kisses your jeweled tongue?
Far away, the sky oozing :?: with umbrellas waits in a hut.
All flowing dreams will overflow nearby as rain,
With the purity of a mind that seeks lots of love.

At night, the blandishment of the anklet of the girl at the lake who
Gets cold when touched by a light wind awakens my heart.
Little short-tailed mynas are crowing on the hill of mango
Flowers of my mind that has faded into a boating song.
A peacock feather is oozing :?: out of sweetly smiling lips.
My heart is gently singing a tune on a bamboo flute,
With the purity of a mind that seeks lots of love.

"Oru Kochu Swapnathin" from Tharavattamma (1966) is a song I've heard many times since childhood. This is one of those songs for which the entire movie is available on YouTube, yet for some reason, clips of songs are not available separately, so you get videos with still pictures like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdkJdbuIsug
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?737

If I were to come by there now
On the wings of a little dream,
We could exchange a glance, hear a word,
And share that sadness together.

We who are like silk could hold those
Two feet tight and cry in broken sobs.
We could caress the blossoming bosom, swelling
With an injury, with my finger and rub butter on it.

If I don't always go calling on him,
The lord of my life will neither eat nor sleep.
When will God show my baby lying
Down inside me his father?

"Manjalayil Mungithorthi" is a song from the movie Kalithozhan (1966). This is the first time I've ever heard the whole song sung by someone other than my dad again. :P The actors here are Prem Nazir and Sheela, two of the biggest names in the Malayalam movie industry at the time (Sheela had played Karuthamma in Chemmeen the year just before this movie):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtjykWLrC8w
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?626

Diving into a yellow wave and drying itself with a towel,
The moonlight of late December or early January came.
You alone, I did not see!
You alone did not come,
Greek partridge, Greek partridge, Greek partridge of love!

The Indian landanum bloomed and blossomed.
Imagination took a plate. :?:
Yet I didn't see you, jewel of my eye!
I didn't see you, my girlfriend and lover!
Is there anyone who did? Is there? Is there?

Before the whole story was over,
Before the curtain fell,
With tears on her cheeks,
With the tears of grief,
She crossed over and walked away!

I walked, singing and singing
On the flute of pain.
Take off your veil and come, you
Princess, princess, princess!

This is a song from Kaayalum Kayarum (1979) called "Chithira Thoniyil Akkare Pokaan":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcrRq6d7dHA
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?516

Girl under my wing,
Girl whose smile wore anklets,
Girl, can I manage to reach the other side
Of the river in my boat under the
Chithira star?

My boat waits and slumbers when it sees you.
My boat tarries and waits when it doesn't see you.
I'm raising a rope from the shore and looking for shores.
Your eyes are drawing a playground, drawing a
Playground on the part of my body that is my heart.

Girl gathering the rope net and getting shy,
Did you tie a garland of flowers around me?
I'll pick an auspicious day to put the wedding necklace around your neck.
I'll hold your hand and get you to move in,
I'll get you to move into my mud hut.

And this is "Ragendu Kiranangal" from Avalude Ravukal (1978). The title of the movie means 'her nights', and a lot of Malayalee guys assume it's a porno, but apparently, it's a philosophical tragedy in reality. There is a Hindi song with the same tune in the excellent movie Swami (1977):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrOtbzl-Z1M
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?4595

The rays of the moon of sexual passion didn't emit any light.
The eyes of the burflower-tree of the moon didn't blink.
Mind and body alike put full necklaces around
Sexual revelry and turned into deserts.
Truly, her nights are always devoid of sleep!

On a helpless day, while even she didn't notice,
Time came and rained toy arrows into that heart of the flower of tears.
In the heart of the night, she turned into the thrill of a kind of devil's dance.

The poor lady silently meditated to someone without anyone at all noticing.
Time came and presented her with an idol to worship to show it to her. :?:
She stood there with the remains of the garlands but without worshipping it. :?:

Two songs (in the order they appear in in the movie) from Sathyavan Savithri (1977), which is a retelling of a story within the Mahabharata of a newly widowed woman tricking Yama, the god of death, into reviving her husband:

"Neelambujangal Vidarnnu"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMAVwQrz5KM
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?4386

Blue lotuses bloomed,
What became blue lotuses looked for eyes,
And blue lotuses bloomed.
A full necklace shone in the sky,
A full necklace shone in the sky
Looking for a goddess with an aqueous flute.

Charming deity, have you
Seen that river of song?
The flowing one sings love songs
And disappears in every dream!
Dreams sometimes bear fruit, and
Then my soul beats in a feeling of wonder!

Breeze, have you caressed that
Lady living in the forest of heaven?
The goddess scatters flowers of enjoyment
And disappears every season!
Dreams sometimes bear fruit, and
Then my soul beats in a feeling of wonder!

"Ashadham Mayangi"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w36Z8T4Q7Ls
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?4385

The month of Ashadha slumbered under your cloudy flute.
The sky shone in your eyes.
A melody meditated on your lip, and
Love beat in my tender mind and rose.

The types of flowers in the forest that borrow
The beautiful forms of bodies forgot their joy.
The eternal springtime in you made color,
Fragrance, and honey its treasures
And made me the god, made me the
God who guards those treasures.

The Stream of Milk that is romance and borrows the
Imagination of a beautiful woman's heart forgot its deluge.
The worship song that you dance to made
Anklets, bangles, and jewels its treasures
And made me the song,
Made me the song you dance to.

I think I recently discovered this Muslim song "Oru Kotta Ponnundallo" from Kuttikuppayam (1964):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDJWP5rcxH4
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?8253

Your body is covered with a
Basketful of gold and gold chains!
Don't cry, jewel of my heart (
qalb)!
Aren't you my daughter made of hard candy?

Aren't you an enclosed, little jasmine God made bloom?
Aren't you a peacock who's come to dance in the flower grove of beauty?

There are golden-colored earrings
For you to wear on your ears and
Wedding necklaces for you to wear
On your breast with big freckles on it.

You need perfume all over your body as beautiful
As a pearl for your grandmother to smell.
We should put eyeliner on your beautiful eyes
So that your laugh showering honey can be heard.

And these are some other kid-themed songs from the movie Unnikale Oru Katha Parayam (1987) in honor of my niece's birthday tomorrow! :)

Title song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnkhO55flsw
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?7089

Let me tell you a story, little kids!
Let me tell you the story of this flute!
It was born long ago on a bamboo stalk somewhere,
On a grassy hill or in a flowering forest;

With its mother, who the dew and precious
Wind gave it, to giving him away;
Weaving handkerchiefs out of the feathers of summer sprouts;
On the waves of the wind looking for the tunes of unsung songs.
One day, as a tune, the flute, with the pain
Of injury in its heart of hearts as a song...

On the thatched roof where good honeysuckle flowers have died,
Under the wishing tree beneath the tent of the sky,
Until this useless bamboo stalk breaks, until this song is no longer there,
The tune on this flute will be the mind of the
Goatherd for all the baby goats he has in his flock.

"Punchiriyude Poovilikal":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0AclP5kydc
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?7091

A chill, a thrill in the waves
Quietly bubbling up in a stream,
Curly lock of hair that a family of flutes
Of the flower petals of my heart twirled...

There's a melody in the sweet calls of sweet smiles,
And there's a world in the wetness of beautiful eyes.
Dancing peacock, singing cuckoo, are
You looking for a wave of timed rhythm?

Spotted baby goat
Listening to footsteps,
Don't you always cover and
Caress your desires inside?
When you smile, there is also the sweet
Wave of the coconut water of your mind,
And when you're just tired of grazing cattle :?:
In the desert of my heart scorched by burning fire,
Then we're moving into an imaginary
World of golden dreams.

Wind living in a nest of pomegranate juice,
Why did your fingertips
Even caress your silences?
When you fly around with a chill
On the wings winter scratches,
When half asleep on a flower in a body of
Water blooming as the petals of a rainbow,
Don't you keep caressing the four or five
Royal jasmine sprouts in the thicket on the fence?

"Vaazhapoonkilikal":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37fhb1hi_FI
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?7090

Birds on the banana plant, birds on the banana plant
Weave little nests. All there are on the tender leaf blade
Of the palm tree,
nanu nane, are birds on the banana plant.
The sun decorates each heart
And pair of eyes with each desire.
When rain clouds cast their shadows,
Like jeweled anklets in a peacock's mind...

On a certain hill, at the foothill, needless
To say, a thousand birds set up their nests!
Young birds, little baby birds all together
Sang
thannaaram and danced, sitting by themselves.

You come under the grove where the new moon
Hangs, too, baby myna on the glass hill!
Let's go ahead and build a shelter
Up from Indian laburnum together!
Let's decorate the wrinkled jeweled necklace of dreams today!

The good sky is spreading flowers and rain.
Come have a feast, scarab :?: beetle and burning wind!
This is a pure moment, a gold-colored moment.
Now, with this, let's rise together with one hand and one body!

Christmas was just last month/a few weeks ago, so here's a Christmas medley from Nokketha Doorathu Kannum Nattu (1985). Unlike all the other songs in this thread so far (except maybe one or more of TeneReef's?), this song does have a short part in (fairly odd :P) Indian English based on "Jingle Bells":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFiY0cdWCDs
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?1437

Come, come into the gathering of song
On the night of worship! Look, a god is born!
Look, our lord is born! Let's worship him, let's worship him!

A small, smiling box of white light or firecrackers or a sparkler with a little blue light,
Enjoy it, mind, as much as you can!
The colorful sun, golden chaff, the first drying of broken glass, or
The chain of firecrackers or procession of candles that someone or other lit up deep inside

On this roofed platform with rainbow flags, a jeweled dome,
Inside this grass hut on this starry hill

Calm evening, pure ground,
Fall and sleep quietly,
Baby Jesus Christ,
Solitary lord of the heavens and Earth,
In the Virgin Mother's good hands.

This movie is more famous for this song, though, whose name is "Aayiram kannumay" (also sung by Yesudas in the same movie with trivially different lyrics):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFYkpnBfdY0
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?1436

I waited for you
With a thousand eyes.
A dove, a bird of a flower's honey
Flew far out of me.

The dove, bird of a flower's honey
Didn't notice the dew falling.
The dove, bird of a flower's honey
Didn't notice the sun coming and going.
It didn't notice the dew falling.
It didn't notice the sun coming and going.
I was counting the days
Until you'd come, dear,
Dove, bird of a flower's honey!
My lifetime achievement, you
Came, came, and waited.
My lifetime achievement, you
Came, came, and waited.

Dove, bird of a flower's honey,
Did the wind extend kisses to you?
Did the little dragonfly play you the
thamburu?
Did the great peacock inside you wave its feathers,
A yellow crown flower that
Bloomed in my memory,
A life force that
Flew away from me?

There's also a video of a white guy from here in Austin performing the same song! I don't know him or anything, but apparently, his wife is Malayalee, and this is his favorite Malayalam song or something):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8BZpuALW6o
This is a Christian song from Thomasleeha (1975), which is based on the legend of Apostle Thomas introducing Christianity to Kerala. Apparently, songs like this were intended to attract Christian audiences and convince them that watching movies was not a morally objectionable activity (a very big and common concern among people in the early years of the movie industry not only in Kerala but also in India more generally, since women acting was seen as equivalent to prostitution):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UlWREYuiOM
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?3630

Sad, persecuted people, you come along!
Poor, oppressed people, you come along!
The kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of heaven is for you.

Lamp of Bethlehem, dream of God's Kingdom,
Your name is being hallowed; your kingdom is coming.
Leader of Israel, singer of universal love,
Your name is being hallowed; your kingdom is coming.

Reviled and destitute people, you are lucky.
After all, Christ's tents are what you have!
Peace, peace to you!

Sound of Galilee, divine sadness of Gethsemane,
Your name is being hallowed; your kingdom is coming.
Blood worn on your head at Calvary, thirst on the mountain of Golgotha,
Your name is being hallowed; your kingdom is coming.

Sad, persecuted people, you come along!
Poor, oppressed people, you come along!
The kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of heaven is for you.
Peace, peace on Earth!

And these are two songs from Balettan (2003), a comedy that was once played in a movie theater here. :P I haven't really seen it since, but I seem to remember it being better than most Malayalam comedies I've seen. The first is "Baletta Baletta," and the second is "Karu Karu Karuthoru Pennaanu" (sung by none other than the main actor in the movie, Mohanlal!):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpZ9EPAbz4M
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?8841

Bird in the shade, where are your peacock feather wings?
Cuckoo in the rain, where is there a little bit of lightning?
Blue sea, where is the river in summer?
Flower-like cuckoo, where is the stanza of the song?
Tiny little river,
Did you see the cooing cu-cuckoo
Anywhere in the grove of Chrysanthus seeds
You fly around wobbling?

Where are the Indian laburnum flowers to be seen first thing in the morning
Atop the short-tailed :?: hill,
Under the hut of dew seen first thing in the morning?
Where is the multitude of clouds playing rain like a
veena
Under the little dove's wing,
On top of the throbbing, scattering embroidery?
Could he have run away and hid
With a soldier's sword into the jeweled mountains?
Could he be bending down and hopping
To beat waves in a sea of sand?
Did he come, did he come this way with a spinning top yesterday?

Why, he's sneaking off properly and running
Across the forest where panthers run
And destroying midland canals!
He's watching the umbrella-displaying Pooram
As the town raises the outer gate
The indebted wind spreads!
He's bending down and flying
Smartly and powerfully with meaningless words!
He's getting into trouble
With blowpipes and the tune of gunshots!
Did he come, did he come this way with a spinning top yesterday?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYyqxq2mexY
Lyrics: http://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?8839

She's a dark black girl.
She's my eyes; she's my heart.
She's the virgin honey of a forest flower.
She's a lady myna singing a song.
She's the lip of a young, tender leaf of a mango tree. Both her eyelashes are beetles.
She's a braggart hiding her insolence. She's a flying arrow.

She's the nest on a sweet mango tree. She's the cuckoo in the nest.
Lady cuckoo singing "cuckoo, cuckoo," who do you have to be with you?
Come with a lullaby, parrot, to keep the beet
thithai thithai!
Flirting with her glass eyes, lighthouse golden as a lighthouse,
You're a forest blooming with sugarcane with a swing on top of
A ripe palm leaf on the branch of which lotus? She's a black new moon.

She's the beauty of a temple pigeon. She's a sari of banyan leaf blossoms.
She's the color of the hibiscus flower. She's the rain at the end of a taro leaf.
I'll kiss you, precious! I'll make you jump like a little wave.
I'll finish making you a nose ring that will come off like the dusk.
The lovely girl is married with vermillion. The wedding necklace is made of glass beads.
She's a deer shinier than glass. She's my darling girl.

Here's one that I'm very fond of but doesn't seem to be very well known. Originally sung by Yesudas for a film in the '80s, I think, but I like this version. Don't ask me what the first line means though--'O singer of the sinless imagination'?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfZjyA_gQqY&list=RDYfZjyA_gQqY

And here is something nice and contemporary. Also originally sung in an older film (Pingaami) but I think this version is actually better than the original, although admittedly the lyrics make more sense when sung by a woman. You can find the original on YouTube as well. It's in very straightforward Malayalam that I guess would also be fairly transparent to a Tamil speaker.

Re: Songs in Malayalam

Postby vijayjohn » 2018-07-02, 16:26

Thanks for both of your songs, rmanoj! :)

I'm still posting old songs I grew up with because there are so many of them and why not? :P I have a weakness for these songs.

These songs are from Aduthaduthu (1984). The first is "Illikkadum Chellakkattum":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvPrA9EGvXQ
Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?8037

One second will join
The bamboo forest and the flowing breeze.
The flower and blossom will wear a heart in their hair.
The dew and rain will turn into a flower.

Our minds will sing by themselves.
The ocean will add its rhythm.
Even the heat of this sun will be full of cool weather.
Love will blossom in our eyes and in our hearts.
Playfulness and happiness will fade into color.

A messenger will convey our desire.
A cloud will go far away and come back.
Birds will speak, dripping with honey.
Tender fish will stir in the chill of the stream.
Cuckoos will fly on beautiful wings.

Unfortunately, I can't find video clips of the other two songs I know that are apparently from the movie (I'm not sure they ever made it into the final release), "Alolam Chanchadum":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vImjI-dzKKw
Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?8039

Darling inner song of joy,
If only you were to come with the fragrance
Of an early autumn flower, with the honey of
The blossom of desire in this gently swaying wind!

Nightingales in the garden, in the grove
Wait to sing melodies. They make a nest
In my nest. Come, my baby bird; the
Flower-arrowed one (Cupid) is here!
Let's go dancing and singing today in this chariot of joy
All over the shores where dusk spreads its colors between day and night!

I've been longing for so many days
To say a darling name in your ear.
You wind who comes tickling shy eyes
Before leaving, hold on for a little while!
Can you bring the song I sing on my moist lips a beat?
Can you stand guard by the side of this road without anyone seeing?

and "Chiri Thookum Thumbi":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBxdIC5z3Po
Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?8038

Come forward and dance, dragonfly spreading smiles!
All that's on my mind is your voice.
All that's in my eyes is your face.
Come like a flower full of honey in a dream seen first thing in the morning!

Will you come
To dance in me as the goddess
Of melody wearing golden anklets?
I'm waiting for you
With dreams, my darling.
Come, two bodies, with one heart!

How amazing, how gracious
God's love is!

I'll always bring the same emotional rhythm
To the song that the seven seas sing.
You come with the cool nectar on one blossom
To rub my wounds with honey,
To cover me with kisses!

Forevermore and everywhere,
May the song of love be praised!

And I guess I'll post another folk song this time, too (I'm much less familiar with these kinds of songs and heard them all for the first time on YouTube):

Yes. Another version of the first song is even sampled in the second-to-last song in my last post, "Chiri Thookum Thumbi," from 2:39 to 2:56 and from 4:12 to 4:28.

Re: Songs in Malayalam

Here are a bunch more songs from various time periods in Malayalam, along with my attempts at translating the lyrics of each one, except for one video that already comes with subtitles. "Idavaakaayalin" is a song from the 1982 movie Vidhichathum Kothichathum:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy1O2IgdOBM
Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6328

Neighbor of Lake Idava, childhood friend of the Arabian Sea,
Everyone around heaven, white pond, wears rural costumes.

However seasonal you may be,
Red flowers bloomed beautifully.
Let me enjoy the smell of your musk,
Unmarried woman with a beautiful body!
I'll row your toy boats.
I'll caress your hair.

Can I come on your walk to the golden
Temple, married lady from southern Kerala,
As you stand with sandalwood paste,
Shyly arranging auspicious objects to see as you wake up?
I'll wake up to the tune of your bell.
I'll fade into your
mantra to the Sun.

"Seemanthini" is a song from the 1975 movie Adithi:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hELV3XTg9m8
Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?3566

Whose vermilion of the gentle smile
Of love is on your lips, married lady?
In the mirage of the moon of whose fingernails
Did your youth completely bathe and blossom?

As you walk gradually with shaky
Feet like doves beating their white
Wings, a clay veena, this land,
Sings about you.
Make me the fibers of its breast!
Make me the chorus, the chorus,
The chorus of your love!

I will put my sorrows to sleep with
This air of my deep breaths
Like the pure holy basil on this one
Lonely path where your shadow fell.
I'll pull off your hundred fake faces.
I'll be the pain, be the pain, be the
Pain in you that never goes away.

I'm including two songs from Oru Sundariyude Katha (1972) called "Seethapakshi":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ey9zMXzQHL8
Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?2750

Sita bird, Sita bird, when is your Lord
Vishnu coming, holy, noble bird?

Someday, your husband will tie the bowstring of marriage, put a garland of Indian
Laburnum around your neck, and scoop you up in those ropes used for tying cattle.
When Vishnu, shaking all over and loosening his bunched-up hair with
The peacock feather, sees you first thing in the morning at dawn,
All the maidens in the village will be married happily ever after, married happily ever after.

Someday, a romantic dream will wake you up and adorn you with kisses
From its lips, and you'll swoon onto the holy marked chest of your beloved.
When he sees you first thing in the morning at dawn after you bathe on the
Fourth day of your marriage in the flower grove with four medicinal trees,
All the beautiful women in the village will be young forever, young forever.

And "Venna Tholkkum Udalode":

Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?2752

Menstruating woman in love, you bloom
Night after night, passionate, charming
Woman with a body whiter than butter,
Like a blossom of the pale white moonlight,
With a body whiter than butter.

Like a flower that bloomed in your heart, like a ray of light good old
Cupid shot, with a sweet smile, a moist breast drowned in the mist.
You come cover, cover me
Until my desire ends!

With a chill that came and covered me, with the joy you came with
Playing with a ball, with the thrill you bring only to your lover,
You come fill, fill me up
Until my thirst ends!

"Puzhayorathil" is a song from a movie that's not quite as old called Atharvam (1989), featuring the famous actress Silk Smitha:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGbysQKGDD8
Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?6915

The precious boat hasn't reached the riverbank.
Is it on another shore where crown flower trees flower
Or on a riverbank where sweet words flower?
Has anyone seen my precious boat out there?
The precious boat hasn't reached the riverbank.

The tunes the boatmen sing have faded out.
Someone's thinking in their ears on the shore and wailing.
Did the wandering bird chant about seeing someone or other
On the shore where the ruby-red serpent lives,
On the river where the rainbow boat swims?

Rain clouds have come and color my breast. The
Spreading lightning took the young damsel right away.
Somebody or other drowned my boat and is floating flowers
In the river caressing you, descending dusk, gently
Rocking you back and forth and singing you a lullaby.

"Mauliyil" is a song from the 2002 movie Nandanam. This song comes with subtitles, so I haven't bothered translating it myself:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHxX_oghRuk
Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?9108

"Ethra Pookkaalamini" is a song from Raakkuyilin Raagasadassil (1986):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IBTSowojtM
Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?7719

Mother, for how many good times, how many
Sweet months, how many autumns (Navaratris),
My goddess, will your face shower me like the moon
With the milk of moonlight, fall, and fade into me?
Will Mithila make the dear daughter of King Janaka
A story of separation again?
You tell me, tell me, tell me!

Is this the
Shanmukhapriya ragam,
The emotion of love within you,
Or the song that makes me me,
A beauty that ultimately
Joins the shore of my heart,
The
Shanmukhapriya ragam?

Oh, how many sadnesses, how long a life
In the forest, how much fated playing in it
Will you come fall and melt again even today
On the Earth as pearls on teary cheeks?

"Ente Swapnathin" is a song from Achaani (1973):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARrLPhng_m0
Lyrics: https://www.malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?3012

Shapely woman who came out
Into the lotus pond of my dream,
A blue lotus opened its eyes
And stood there looking at you.
The full moon in the month of

Chaitra stood there watching you bathe.

A desirable lady of the forest came and
Joined the forest I liked in my imagination.
She gathered up beautiful, colorful
Plates and prepared an assortment
Of wild flowers to welcome you.

On a night when flowering trees bloomed
In the divine garden of amorous thought,
The blue sky and stars adorned themselves
And waited for you, dear, to see your dance.

"Neram Poyi Nada Nada" Seetha (1960) is a duet between a man and a woman. The female singer in this clip is a native speaker of Telugu named Jikki who very rarely sang in Malayalam and probably didn't speak Malayalam at all. I can definitely hear a non-native accent when she sings:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z12hkMnXSTk
Lyrics: https://malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?24

We're burning daylight! Keep going, keep going!
My feet are getting tired,
kada kada.
We have a long way to go. Keep going, keep going!
My stomach's getting hungry,
pada pada.

Why have we come back over these
Mountains to see this one forest
With eyes pacified by seeing the
Lotus that is Lord Rama's graceful face?

Bird flying away, if you're off
In the same direction as us,
Can I get onto that good
Chariot that is your wings?

This is a much more famous lullaby from the same movie called "Pattu Padi":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7XlhLOIUjQ
Lyrics: https://malayalasangeetham.info/s.php?15

Child of the lotus flower, I'll sing you to sleep.
Love of my heart,
Love of my heart, you listen, listen and sleep!

Why, you turned this grass hut into a lovely scaffolding!
I swear on you, my dear, that I gained control of an
Empire!

Sweetheart, someday, you will end up as a king,
Lord Rama, without your father forgetting you
Then.
