Is there no topic for Kashmiri yet? Shame!
I've been lusting for it for a while. I found some pdfs and what not for it, so maybe I'll do some dabbling.

I don't think there is a topic for Kashmiri yet. I love Kashmiri, it's such a beautiful language! And Kashmir itself is also so beautiful!!

I remember finding the first link a long time ago. I never really gave Kashmiri a go at the time, but it's an interesting language.

Here are a few more songs (I have even more of them up my sleeve ). One is "Wathu laalo nindre," a poem by the female 16th-century poet Habba Khatoon. This rendition of that poem is one of my favorite Indian songs (probably like the fourth Kashmiri song I'd ever heard), and in fact, I've posted it before in the songs thread:

The one I heard after that was "Maharaza Ho," a Kashmiri version of "Vash Malle" from the Bollywood movie Henna (1991). "Maahaaraazaa" in Kashmiri means 'bridegroom'; the word for 'bride' is "maahaaraanee." (All the vowels in both words are long ). This isn't exactly the highest-quality video I've seen, but I kind of like it anyway:

The first song listed here as "Ha AshkI Tchhooro, RashkI Kerthas" is a Kashmiri song ("ashq"/"ashkI" -> a love song?) as sung by Asha Bhosle.

"Walo myaani poshe madano" is another poem by Habba Khatoon. I managed to find a PDF of the entire text of this poem and six others in Devanagari as used for Kashmiri (and one of them is also available in a Romanized version!). Here are two videos, along with the text (in Devanagari), of the second Habba Khatoon poem I found the text for. This poem is called "Gaah Chon Pyawaan."

The first video here is from Habba Khatoon, a Kashmiri movie from 1975 directed by Bashir Budgami. All of the songs were sung by Shameema Azad. See here for more information on the movie and Habba Khatoon herself. The whole movie is available online as well:

OK, I guess I managed to find two videos for each of the poems by Habba Khatoon I know of! (Well, for almost all of them, anyway). In all cases, the first video is from the old movie about her, and the second is another version by Mehmeet Syed.

This is the third song, "Kãasi mo raavun shoore paan." Again, I've included the lyrics (in Devanagari, as always) that appear in both songs, and once again, Mehmeet's version includes the second stanza, but the movie version doesn't. So here's the movie version from 1975:

I actually can't find a YouTube clip for this particular song from the movie for which the title indicates that it's this song in particular, but this clip from the movie actually is of that song. (Give yourself a pot of buttermilk if that sentence made sense to you! ). "Tsi' kyawho zi' gayi myaani di'y" is the next song. For this song, I have access to (some variation of) the lyrics not only in Devanagari but also in IPA! A slightly different version of the lyrics in IPA may be found here with a translation into English. However, the Devanagari version is much closer to the lyrics in these two videos. As usual, the first is from the movie:

I love Kashmiri music so much. And I love reading the Devanagari along with it.

By the way Vijay are you using a Kashmiri font because some of the letters are coming up as boxes?

Well, not really. What I do is to use Google Input Tools for Hindi (you probably know what I'm talking about already, but I included a link just to make sure it was clear ), but since Kashmiri has a lot of sounds (mainly vowels) that Hindi doesn't have, there are other symbols that are used for writing Kashmiri in Devanagari script but aren't used in Hindi. Those symbols are the ones that probably aren't displaying correctly. (I find that some symbols display better in Chrome than on Firefox and others are the other way around ).

So to add those special symbols, I click on "special characters," then a small window pops up and I click on "Symbol" and then "South Asian Scripts," and then next to that, I click on where it says "Bengali" (which is the script they show you by default since Bengali starts with B ) and click on "Devanagari" instead, and finally, I go through the list of symbols and click on whichever one I need.

Sorry, it's kind of a complicated explanation. Hope it makes some sense, though!

Oh, no problem, and I'm glad you like the songs and the lyrics in Devanagari script! But if you just want to see the lyrics without all the boxes, I pretty much just got them from here. (That page has the full poems, whereas these songs just include part of the lyrics from each poem, like in ghazals and such).
