Assamese

Postby Meera » 2012-10-15, 3:14

I could have sworn I made a topic for Assamese a long time ago, but I guess I didn't because I can't find it in the search button and I looked through all the threads and didn't see one. Anyway, I have been kind of interested in it for a while, but haven't actually learned anything in it but I would really like too. It's the offical language of Assam in India and has about 13 million speakers, it also has some miniority speakers in Bhutan. It's very similair to Bengali and is a really beautiful language.

Here are some very few resources I could find for Assamese:

This site teaches the sounds of Assamese with example words:
http://www.iitg.ernet.in/rcilts/phaseI/asamiya.htm

This from Eurotalk and is only a demo, however it does teach some words:
http://eurotalk.com/en/resources/learn/assamese

This website teaches the Assamese alphabet(which is almost exactly like bengali:):
http://www.maharashtraweb.com/learning/ ... samese.htm

This teaches the alphabet with an example word:

Assamese and Bengali are like Spanish and Portuguese.
Assamese and Spanish have a lot of /x/ and /s/ sounds, while Bengali and Portuguese have / ʃ/.

There are only two Assamese songs I have heard so far, but I haven't heard them in a long time. I found both today!

The first was "Aaji Bohag Aahilee Buli" by Anima Choudhury: http://music.raag.fm/Assamese/songs-142 ... ry-Various. Listening to it again after all these years, I realize now that I had forgotten how much of a pop song that was. I remember the tune of the chorus, but not that technopop background.

But my favorite is the other one, "Ahason aha kaxote boha": http://music.raag.fm/Assamese/songs-142 ... gs-Various. I remember the lyrics being written somewhere roughly as follows (however (in)accurate they, or my memory, may be):

CHORUS:
Ahason aha, kaxote boha,
Kowaso kowa senai.
Ki buli matiba senaiti o?
Ki katha patiba jiuti o?
Jouvan ethale jai (2)

Nahaha namata katho nakoa kio?
(Giggle) Laaj korisha?
Eraso bhemti diyaso haat milai
(Male voice: Uff! Ki bipad!)
(Giggle, followed by chorus)

Bujaane nubuja phagunare gaan
Diya [dipa?] ne nindiya samayaare daan
(Bujaane...)
Ahaso kasaloi, tumi ki kath?
Dharaso hatate, kiharnu laaj?
Tejate uthise baan (2)
Nahaha namata katho nakoa kio?
(Giggle) Beya paisaa?
Uchal dehati lowaso savoti loa
(Male: Chhi! Tumi bor nilaj!)
(Giggle, followed by chorus)

There's an Assamese song "Mon possuar" composed by Salil Chowdhury and sung by his wife Sabita Chowdhury in some unknown year:

http://www.salilda.com/songs/nonfilm/as ... ssuaar.mp3

Apparently, the only other version of this song that can be heard anywhere is the famous Malayalam version "Manaykkale thathe" (മനയ്ക്കലെ തത്തേ) from Raasaleela (1975).
