Tamil Alphabet : Lesson 1

So today we going to learn about vowels. Tamil has short and long vowels.
1) Long Vowels
அ (a) Pronounced like a as in that
இ (i) pronounced as i in this
உ (u) Pronounced as in the oo in book, took and look.
எ (e) as in when
ஒ (o) as in hotel

2)Short Vowels
ஆ (a) as in got
ஈ (e) as in sweet
ஊ (uu) as in tool
ஏ (ee) as in there
ஓ(oo) as in boat

I can't really think of any Tamil words with all vowels so no practice words now :( However here are all the letters so you can see them written out.

Long Vowels:

அ அ அ

இ இ இ

உ உ உ

எ எ எ

ஒ ஒ ஒ

Short Vowels:

ஆ ஆ ஆ

ஈ ஈ ஈ

ஊ ஊ ஊ

ஏ ஏ ஏ

ஓ ஓ ஓ
