Postby Meera » 2011-12-24, 18:33

So I just watched a Marathi film and became very interested in Marathi. I don't think I will seriously learn it, but I think it desveres it's own thread :P So does anyone know Marathi or have any interest in Marathi?

This is an online textbook for Marathi. It looks pretty good. It is a computer program you have to download, but it does have audio and is written in Devangari. It also has dialouges. It is very useful if you want to learn Marathi.

A very old-fashioned ebook, but it's better then nothing.

Again very old, but theres so little sources for Marathi it might be useful.

I am glad you liked Natarang, hopefully there will be more Marathi-language movies making it big. I became interested in the language, but it seems there are very few resources available to learn it.

I just started to use this Marathi language book:

(there's an audio sample on the publisher's site:)
http://www.buske.de/product_info.php?cPath=1_136&products_id=2875

http://books.google.de/books?id=Fq3mkqvSNYcC&printsec=frontcover&hl=de#v=onepage&q&f=false

It teaches around 2000 vocabulary items and comes with a cd.
Unfortunately it's only available in German.. :para:
Since I'm a bit busy at the moment I'm going at it with a very slooow pace.. :silly:

Edit: links

How much of a discount does knowing Hindi give you for learning Marathi?

Hello! No problem! I like smaller languages and when this book came up on a Wanderlust search on amazon, I just had to buy it. I've also got books for a few other Indo-Iranian languages, mostly Colloquial/TY stuff and the Assimil and Living language Hindi. I plan to learn a bit of each language in the (very distant) future :)

True to my username I can't stop wondering about the future of the languages I'm learning..
Is Marathi endangered by Hindi or English (in the long run)?

I don't know much Marathi at all, but I think I can answear this question. In my opinion it is a huge discount, they use the same script, so if you learn Hindi you will know how to read Marathi. The vocabulary is also very similair and almost sounds like a dialect almost. A lot of times I can make out basic sentances in Marathi just from Hindi vocabulary. Here are some examples:

Hindi: मैं ठीक हूँ (main theek hoon)
Marathi: मी ठीक आहे (mi theek ahe)
Hindi:माफ़ करना (maaf karna)
Marathi:माफ करा (maaf kara)
Hindi:कितनी? (Kitni?)
Marathi: किती? (kiti?)

If you know Hindi, vocabulary and reading in Marathi will be fairly easy. The hardest thing will be the grammar, unlike Hindi, Marathi has three genders and it has six cases (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive, locative, instrumental, and oblique).Unlike Hindi, it aslo has an inclusive and exclusive "we". I think Hindi can help with grammar though because it still has the SOV format and since Hindi has cases it can help you grasp the case system better. But I think knowing Hindi will help a lot with Marathi.

Really? I wasn't expecting that. I knew Bengali had an extensive case system but it's an eastern Indo-Aryan language so it's not all that closely related to Hindi. I did know Marathi had exclusive and inclusive we though. (It's not that uncommon - some dialects of Mandarin have it.)

I just looked up Panjabi and it has five cases, but two of them are dying out so that would leave it with the same three cases as Hindi (nominative, oblique, and vocative). I have to wonder why Hindi lost so much of its inflection when other Indo-Aryan languages didn't.
